Family, Loss, and Recovery
A homily given by Father Justin Lopina for Holy Family Sunday (the Sunday after Christmas). Filmed at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Wauwatosa, WI. December 29th, 2024.
Reading I
Sir 3:2-6, 12-14
God sets a father in honor over his children;
a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.
Whoever honors his father atones for sins,
and preserves himself from them.
When he prays, he is heard;
he stores up riches who reveres his mother.
Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children,
and, when he prays, is heard.
Whoever reveres his father will live a long life;
he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother.
My son, take care of your father when he is old;
grieve him not as long as he lives.
Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him;
revile him not all the days of his life;
kindness to a father will not be forgotten,
firmly planted against the debt of your sins
-a house raised in justice to you.
Reading II
Col 3:12-21 or 3:12-17
Brothers and sisters:
Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,
heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another,
if one has a grievance against another;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,
the peace into which you were also called in one body.
And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another,
singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Wives, be subordinate to your husbands,
as is proper in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives,
and avoid any bitterness toward them.
Children, obey your parents in everything,
for this is pleasing to the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children,
so they may not become discouraged.
Gospel
Lk 2:41-52
Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast
of Passover,
and when he was twelve years old,
they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days, as they were returning,
the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day
and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
but not finding him,
they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions,
and all who heard him were astounded
at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him,
they were astonished,
and his mother said to him,
“Son, why have you done this to us?
Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”
And he said to them,
“Why were you looking for me?
Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
But they did not understand what he said to them.
He went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them;
and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor
before God and man.

    hello father !! i truly agree and enjoyed your thoughts on halloween !! for me, i combine halloween with my all souls devotion for an "on and off" 2 to 3 day session of thoughtfulness, if you will, of remembering those that have passed, both from my immediate family, lifetime friends and those i see along the way that are less fortunate than me. i keep a small spiral notebook, chest-pocket sized, with any and all names of people to pray for throughout the "regular" year and use it for this all souls time period as well. i also employ a devotional candle going during that time, too, as i have a hard time with the entire halloween "thing". as you say, we accept what others do and respect their choice on that day. also, i notice the style of lettering on your shirt... a style of which someone who liked a good guitar beat like me, likes !! here is my problem.... their lyrics are absolutely awful most of the time, and yet mr. a. young is an extremely talented guitarist. think of all the time the band was together, dating way back to the early 70's in Australia, and how nice it could have been if they went the way of someone like brian adams or john mellencamp !! well, father, i was also wondering if you are from the wisconsin/minnesota/michigan area, as i am a devoted walleye fisherman, and even though i live 35 miles directly south of buffalo, ny in big dairy farm country, i understand just how many people in your neck of the woods go for walleye , the best eatin' fish on the planet !!! many blessings to you, father, as your work is absolutely fantastic and exactly what our world needs now !!! btw, your name is in my spiral notebook !!! denny armes springville,ny

    I am so glad to know someone else likes Alien 3 so much. I have been very isolated in feeling it was absolutely beautiful. It has always seemed so much more artful and philosophical than the first two. Alien 3 is so much more tragic in so many ways, and in my opinion far more human. And that monologue about flowers and death right when the alien bursts out of Spike/the cow?? It’s so grotesquely poetic

Your words to me in that last email - some i have cut out and put into my daily prayer/conversations with God, etc. Recovering from what - to me - is unfathomable loss and sorrow - and while maybe its early and i am overly optimistic - but I am making progress, I thank God, I thank you, Father Justin and some other priests that i have listened to.

    Most amazing priest ever. Watch his Mass jun 6, 2021 on Heart of the Nation on utube in Milwaukee. He serves at Sacred Heart/St Mathew church in Milwaukee. We are truly deficient by parish priests drawing us to Christ with the truths we truly need bcus we are not being ministered to bcus our priests are overwhelmed with administration rather than service. May God bless Fr Lopina to draw thru his unaffected example other priests being drawn to our Mother Church because we are in the most serious time of our time...culture of death by an atheistic administration for whom we need to pray for their abominations against Mary and our Lord. Infanticide, euthanasia, transgender operations paid with our taxes, same sex marriage, Planned Parenthood being funded by the Biden administration, freedom of speech and religion, our places of worship shut down. Prayer always works. This pandemic doesn't come from God but from our not pleading for forgiveness asking His mercy for shutting Him out and removing Him from our nation. An abomination to our Immaculate Heart of Mary and Jesus Christ Lord and Savior. Pls pray for vocations and for His mercy.

    It's happening right now. This upcoming week I will be trying something new with my students. It's been very exciting to come up with the idea and plan it and I am looking forward to implementing it. God does seem to call me every couple of years to change things up in my career and answering that call has been rewarding every time.

  • @dmsweener
    @dmsweener 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have heard the call, Father. Twice. The first time I was on a bus, after work, in the dark. 50 other people on my bus... And I heard just about a whisper in my right ear which was to the window. The voice said "Go back" and I understood immediately that I was to up end my life, my house, my job at the Jersey shore and return to Philadelphia to care for my mother. I had 5 brothers and sister in Philly. I had stayed w Mom till I was 43. From my perspective, it was their turn. Mom was blind and had lost a leg. But I knew immediately that returning to Philly was my mission, and God Knows I didnt want to. But... I heeded that call! I sold my house and quit my job and headed to Philly... And soon after Mom was diagnosed w ovarian cancer and I nursed her throughout for 3 years. Mom died in 2006. The blessing was mine. I would not have traded those days for anything. Currently I am dragging my feet and working onmy second calling. It has to do with the Divine Mercy. I will let you know if I get it together. That story is too fabulous even for me. God bless you Father Justin. And thank you.

    Two quick mentions for the record: For one, I did record this during my Sunday Mass. I converted my small kitchen table into an altar for the duration of my quarantine. So like my other homily videos, this is my "official message" for this week. Secondly, my hair looks weird because I didn't bother doing anything with it... why would I when I'm not leaving the house? :) I'm wearing a purple stole because it's the only one that I have in my portable Mass kit. In those ways, my private Masses in the kitchen are considerably more casual than normal. That said, everything important and vital to liturgy is/was present. Proper vestments and an altar of stone would certainly be a step up... but the biggest thing these Masses lack are other people. Worship is a communal act, and the necessary lack of other people around me is impossible to ignore.

    Dear Fr. Justin, That's a sad story. Let me tell you a story about a cancer patient who is in terminal stage. All options have been taken and did not work. Patient and doctor have ran out of options. What does the patient do? The patient makes travel plans. Maybe a miracle could happen which would stabilize her situation. Maybe she would get stronger. Or maybe she would not be able to travel at all. But she is being encouraged to plan. To look to the future even if the future is just as near as two weeks. Where is that concept written? It is in the Wellness Community book. I read that book.

    Dr. Laura says something similar in one aspect -- if you had a terrible parent/child relationship when you were a kid, you get a chance you have a good one when you become the parent. She also says it's better to focus your energy on being a good parent rather than focus it on the bad one(s) you had.
