Cannibalism In Our Human Past
Were our ancestors cannibals? Did they sometimes see their neighbors as the ‘other white
meat’? Was hunger a bigger bio-drive than even sex? Distasteful though it may be (sorry…), the
evidence is clear that some of our Paleolithic relatives did eat their own kind.
In Episode One of this two-part series, Dr. Neil Bockoven examines what we now know about
this unspeakable part of our history and what scientists have determined to be the three, main
reasons people have eaten other humans throughout prehistory: survival, aggression and ritual.
Neil is an award-winning PhD geologist, journalist and the author of the historical fiction
“Moctu” series - Moctu and the Mammoth People (October, 2020) and The People Eaters
(July 2022) - as well as a children’s science book titled When We Met Neanderthals (2019). You

Based on the latest scientific evidence, Neil explores the real story of this cannibalism by our ancient relatives. We’ll learn how far back there is evidence of this practice and what may have motivated early man to swallow bites of their own. In a later episodes, we’ll also look at the evolution of our moral objections and developing sense of repugnance at this practice. When is it okay to override our horror at the thought of eating another human? Is it ever justifiable?
