You seem to be claiming that having a belief in a religion (ancient but not too ancient and Abrahamic but unspecified) is superior to modern western cultural discourse in which disparate beliefs in both religions and non-religious content can occur. The real world accuracy of the beliefs don't enter into your consideration simply because they don't appear on the yardstick you're using to measure things with (setting your weak metaphor about magnetism aside for the moment). First I get the impression you think that religious adherence was such that people of all walks of life got to pursue their best life. Or perhaps you thought that western cultures haven't changed over time. I don't think anyone who has a firm understanding of history or anyone who lived outside of America would claim this was the case. The huge change that started what we can call modern life was due to the emergence of science and the philosophical enlightenment. Without those, we would still have slaves, be heavily dependant on social class and engage in regular political and religious wars, persecution and ignorance on the whim of a few monarchs and lords. We might well still have to abide by the idea that the Earth is the centre of the universe and the universe is tiny with little of import outside the earth. We'd be wedded to the idea that there are demons which create sickness and live in constant fear of the unfathomable mysteries every aspect of reality trigger because we'd have no clue about them. Above all this it meant not being able to ask certain questions or make certain observations lest you be outcast, tortured or even killed. You seem to be proposing theocratic power above personal well being and choice without realising it. From there it seems like you're inferring that if changes in society had resulted in people being more consistent in their application of reason that that would have been the better outcome. You're disappointed that people still invoke beliefs and that the spectrum of beliefs being invoked are more disparate and wide ranging. So your proposed solution in the face of this is to disregard the lack of evidence and reason for ancient religious claims and simply believe them anyway? On what basis can you claim that is a solution to anything? You're suggesting people just pretend gods are real (whichever ones they feel an affinity with as long as they are ancient, but not too ancient). Further, the ancient religions you refer to are not singular but are made of thousands of variations. You need only look at history to see the various wars and disputes that occur between variations of the same religion to know these differences are non-trivial. Your idyllic imagined version of reality where ancient religions made everything just fine and dandy never existed and never will exist. They can't exist because there is no actual arbiter to resolve the disputes, because there are no actual deities involved. Not only is your imagined deity a personal creation but if we put you back into a era where those beliefs were upheld stringently (or put you in a country where they take a similar hard line with regards to the details of your belief) you would have been labelled a heretic and outcast or killed by now. If you indeed live in the west the reason you don't expect religious persecution is because the society agreed to be areligious. In theocratic societies those freedoms are deeply curtailed. If cultural stability is your aim, then why aren't you promoting an ancient Egyptian pantheon of gods? Their culture lasted much longer than the Abrahamic deities bar a small number of ancient Jews. Is it because in the modern age they aren't believable are they. Why not Hinduism as it one of the longest existing religions on the planet? Is your ability to simply believe some deity or deities exist is limited by your exposure to their doctrines? Do you think the middle east is an oasis of good will and community upliftment due to all those faiths doing their best to be followed to the utmost? This by the way makes a mockery of the magnetism metaphor. There is no coherent force other than the innate desire of humans to live in social conditions equitably. We are social creatures and our chosen beliefs and laws demonstrate that. We are also tribal and fearful of “the other” and our religions reflect that too. You're pointing to the wrong type of solution for the problem you're claiming. Religions work (to the extent that they do) in the same way homogeneous cultures work. If everyone agrees something then are few points of dispute and people need apply less effort to find apparent common ground. In cultures where there are many competing ideas that effect disappears. So the common ground you'd be better prompting is reality based and well reasoned rather than belief based (regardless if those beliefs are religious or non-religious). Beliefs in general are a problem in the modern world because they are inflexible and don't account for new information and technological change. We are in the era of accelerated change and bar a devastating catastrophe it will only continue to accelerate. I agree a much better conversation about the philosophy of what makes a good society is required but I'd suggest if it isn't based on reality it will fail utterly.
