We took a field trip to Erector Sets to watch them CNC the Viroc panels for the #ArborHouse facade. Jenny Sabin joined us over the phone to provide more insight and context about the #LightWeb facade. Viroc is an exterior cement-based composite that holds up well to the elements and looks hella sexy. Shot via Facebook Live at Erector Sets in NE Philadelphia.

    • @ChadLudemanPhilly
      @ChadLudemanPhilly 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This wall has been carefully modeled by others in WUFI and more basic methods. With the intelligent air barrier in the middle and breathable insulation on each side, wall rot is virtually impossible...

    Please don't tell me you are using 'pressure treated recovered wood' for this. If you are, please look up why you don't burn pressure treated wood.

    The interior wall of double stud wall design is the structural load bearing wall. Back during the early '70s oil shocks, when this design emerged out of necessity to reduce the cost of heating fuel, homeowners retrofitted this second non-load bearing stud wall around the existing house to hold additional insulation. The 'double' means the outside. The inside was already there and homeowners didnt want to lose any room space. The wrap wall base plate rested on a ledge, built with studs and sheathed to do one thing: hold insulation. The exterior wall is a wrap-around, with further insulation installed between the interior and wrap wall secured by spacers. So you forgot to install the all critical structural sheathing behind the interior load bearing wall with spacers. You got the vapour barrier half right. It's on the correct side of the interior wall but forgot to wrap it over the ceiling joists because the structure was framed before to the roof before any insulation issues were addressed. And by using OSB on the wrap wall, the building is now a sponge. OSB is H2O-absorbing garbage. Because the vapour (air) barrier is on the outside of the interior stud wall in double stud design and humans in the building exhale moisture, and cooking, and all of that, increasing relative humidity, rock wool is not an ideal choice, unless spend hundreds on top grade acrylic primer and paint.

    Has the dark charred look faded over time with rain and sun? How can you keep that charred gray look, i.e. an oil coating? I am thinking of using this is on a design project for the outside of a modern house.

      I did it with cedar wasn't 100% dry and didn't warp. A couple boards had a slight warp before I started, but straightened them out as I nailed them. I used as in interior accent wall. Looks cool

  • @ChadLudemanPhilly
    @ChadLudemanPhilly 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    We used a simple cedar lap siding here. I don't think you'll need to re-apply your finish every year unless you want it to look shiny and new every year.

  • @umaxen01
    @umaxen01 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Government preaches that heating and cooling machines needs to become more efficient, when realistically what needs to be done is to increase insulation factors to R-80 or R-100, and reducing the "heated area" of your home. (6" wall air cavity) thus reducing your energy consumption by 90%. You could heat your whole house with a few candles.

    Air sealing is accomplished on the exterior with the ZIP System of sheathing and butyl tape.

  • @GeneMstoner
    @GeneMstoner 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fantastic building method, the only think this system does not address is air sealing! Personally I would use Closed cell foam for the first stud wall? What are Your opinions ?

    • @joshmo55
      @joshmo55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The zip wall is a vapor permeable water barrier, it will be a tight house even without ccf.
