Those thrust reversers are of the "target" type, as opposed to "clamshell." Notice how they move through an arc on articulated arms. Clamshell types are simpler, where the reverser halves rotate to a closed position from fixed hinge points at the forward ends. The Boeing 727 had clamshell reversers, the Boeing 737-200 had target reversers developed, along with extended exhaust sections, to move the thrust reversers aft and out from under the wing. More modern, high-bypass turbofan engines normally have a completely different system of reversers that reverse fan air but not the exhaust from the engine core.

New Century Air Center began as Naval Air Station Olathe, Kansas, back in the '40s as a backup to NAS Pensacola. After the Viet Nam War, it transitioned to the Gardner, KS Industrial Airport, and later to New Century, with a few Reserve Activities left aboard. I drilled with the Naval Air Reserve there '90-'95. Made my promitions to O-4 & O-5 while there. Due to BRAC, the Naval Air Reserve departed New Century after 1995. My time based there while drilling and the related Annual Active Duty Training I peformed were a hugely important chapter in my life.

I hope that's a long runway.
