Paul's Train Asylum
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 ธ.ค. 2020
This channel invites you into my Train Asylum to see what's new. I'm usually just running old locos that I've fixed up, trying out the occasion new one, or telling an odd little story about my trains and the imaginary folks who ride them.
The layout is set near the town of Port Grace in the Barnstable Valley, somewhere on the west coast of Canada. It doesn't really exist, but many magical places can't be found on a map so I think it's in good company. And a nearby rift in the Space-Time Continuum means you never know what trains (or other things) might appear.
A big thank you to the many people who share their model railway knowledge and experience on Facebook and TH-cam. I really appreciate your work - in terms of both technical and production skills.
Speaking of which, my videos are shot on very basic equipment so not high on production values. Still, I hope my efforts are sufficient to provide some relaxing entertainment and maybe a few laughs.
Thanks for watching!

My Model Trains: reflecting on some special connections
I was struck this holiday season by the number of TH-camrs doing unboxing videos. Either pre-Christmas acquisitions, Rapido Mystery Boxes, Lionel deliveries, Christmas presents to themselves or from insightful family members and so on. I looked at a lot of them and quite enjoyed seeing all the cool new additions to some already crazy good collections. The technology going into these things is incredible!
I didn't get any new trains over the holidays. More out of choice than anything else. I was having fun with my old ones and working on the S Gauge layout, which led me to reflect on the rather old, humble, low-tech models that transcend their condition, age or basic lack of bells and whistles by way of personal connections. And satisfaction in giving something that once excited kids on a Christmas morning years ago the potential to do it again. With older kids. Like me.
Hence this video. Humble trains, personal connections. I hope you enjoy it, and have some personal connections of your own to share.

American Flyer Trains: Track Test with riveting, edge-of-your-seat live commentary
มุมมอง 1.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I recently finished testing of track electrics on my American Flyer S Gauge layout rebuild. Thought I'd do a video on it for posterity! It features shots of the test as it happened, though I did do some of editing to make it watchable. The primary locos used (GP7 diesel and Royal Blue streamlined steamer) are both from the early 1950s. I had to service the GP7 (a lot) to get it ready to run, bu...
Running Model Trains, and Port Grace gets its Big Break in Show Business! #modeltrain #scifi #romcom
มุมมอง 57หลายเดือนก่อน
This isn't really a Christmas Video. But it does involve a Christmas RomCom, because virtually everywhere you look on TV right now you find them waiting to pounce. Actually, I don't mind a good holiday season romantic comedy. Some can be quite good; the movie equivalent of comfort food. But the one planned to be shot in Port Grace looks like it might not be the best example of the genre... but ...
Model Trains and The Legend of the Slightly Haunted Caboose
มุมมอง 1923 หลายเดือนก่อน
The 'Slightly Haunted Caboose' has come up a couple of times in previous videos. Now that it's almost Hallowe'en, we should examine this Port Grace legend more closely. And maybe experience a slight taste of the paranormal. If we dare. (Insert maniacal laughter here.) Model train traffic around Port Grace, complications arising, and will Flyer return to the Valley?
มุมมอง 3473 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is the result of a really fun running session. The long (for me) CP passenger train at the beginning features some cool old-school coaches, as does the Santa Fe. The heavyweights behind that one were a recent acquisition, and needed some TLC. Still more TLC is called for but I think they now look quite presentable. It took us a while to reach the point of this video (the Budd Car pro...
Running model trains (mostly HO) and recounting a few recent curiosities
มุมมอง 1775 หลายเดือนก่อน
I do try to stick with just recording the running session. Honest! But when I've got the trains tootling around on the track, my mind tends to wander. So the video does too. That said, this 'mostly steam' effort features some of my favourite Canadian models, with a couple of non-Canadian exceptions thrown in for good measure. I've added subtitles identifying all the locos so they'll be easy to ...
The British are coming, and they want their train station back! An ho/oo railway running session.
มุมมอง 4816 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we explain why British profile buildings dominate the landscape of Port Grace and the Barnstable Valley, which is located somewhere on the west coast of Canada. How did they get here? Did any criminal activity take place? And how is it that trains serving U.K. railways are always stopping in for a look-see and a pint or two of local brew? Stay tuned for answers to these pressing q...
HO diesel trains running session - an ALCo, a couple of GPs, a Dash 8 and an E8!
มุมมอง 5438 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm running some of my favourite Canadian diesel locomotives today. The video is a bit longer than usual... just kinda took on a life of its own. I tried to just keep it simple this time, running trains without too much in the way of distracting stories. I may not have been entirely successful. Hope you enjoy the video anyway. About the locos: Bachmann Spectrum made the GP30 and the Dash 8, whi...
HO Trains: The Fleischmann Chronicles (fixing this 0-6-0 steamer then a short running session)
มุมมอง 1999 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently bought this old Fleischmann 0-6-0 steamer off of FaceBook Marketplace. It was billed as 'like new' so I was fairly certain it would need work. Spoiler alert: I was right. This is the first time I've owned - let alone opened up - a Fleischmann loco. I really like the model... nicely detailed, very heavy for its size and really well put together. There are A LOT of gears, though. A LOT...

HO running session: some steam, some diesel, and some weirdness
มุมมอง 22410 หลายเดือนก่อน
An ordinary running session? Well, not entirely. But there is a bit of shunting, and some nice performances by a couple of veteran model trains. The first loco to be featured is a venerable old Indiana Harbour Belt heavy steam locomotive made in the early 60s by Rivarossi. This 0-8-0 shunter has a certain 'visual gravitas'... lots of propulsive movement (many wheels and rods and things) along w...
HO running session: two very different Budd Cars

I love Budd Cars - aka Rail Diesel Cars, or RDCs for short. These characterful conveyances have graced North American landscapes from coast to coast for decades. I've seen them in action on Vancouver Island's E & N railway, where the Day Liner once provided regular service between Victoria/Esquimalt and points north. There were various liveries over the years, including my personal favourite, t...
OO scale running session: A class 101 DMU gets lost
มุมมอง 190ปีที่แล้ว
This is the tale of a DMU (diesel multiple unit) that arrives at the wrong station. On the wrong continent. It's essentially a way for me to justify running this cool UK profile train - an old Lima model - on my Canadian layout. The hero of the piece is Edward the train driver, though a certain Doctor was able to help. And there are robots and an astrophysicist in this story too, but alas they ...
HO running session: passenger and freight services and a Christmas Miracle involving Scotch
มุมมอง 12Kปีที่แล้ว
This running session follows a particularly challenging time working on my layout electrics. I added switched power to a couple of isolated track sections, and in so doing discovered why proper wire management is important. I couldn't make heads nor tails of my wiring schema so ended up screwing stuff up when trying to add the new lines. Lesson learned... though I regret to say, not yet applied...
OO Scale Trains: My Bachmann GWR 2-6-0 redemption story
มุมมอง 443ปีที่แล้ว
I've fixed up a lot of troubled HO and S scale locos over the last several years. This Great Western Railway 4300 Class 2-6-0 represents the first time I've cracked open a British engine. It's a really nice little model... looking quite innocuous mechanically. But lurking under the shell was a bit of a challenge, and plenty of learning opportunities regarding older Bachmann mechanisms. Things l...

Happy New Year to you too!
Looks great! Love American Flyer trains. Only thing I would do is consider adding a crossover somewhere from the outer loop to the inner loop of track. Looks like there is no way to cross from one to the other. I'd probably add that if it were me.
Thanks Robert. Totally agree with you. My old Flyer layout had a crossover and I gave it a lot of thought this time around. On my old setup it was a bit of a stumbling block for through-traffic so this time, for now at least, I made the two loops independent. Hoping it won't be so obvious once I've added some scenic breaks. At some point I'll probably upgrade the track - including the switches - and add a crossover. Stay tuned and thanks again for your comment.
@@pauls-train-asylum-581 I get it... It makes the layout a lot more busy and there may not be enough room to put one in that works like it should. Keep up the good work. You're definitely doing better than I am. All my flyer stuff is packed in boxes right now.
Glad to see your American Flyer S Gauge running again. 👍👍👍👍 You are much more ambitious than me, I am happy using the black and gray versions of the rubber road bed. There is a guy who 3D prints "sleeper" ties (matte and gloss finishes) that fit under the rails, on top of the road bed and between the metal ties. He makes both standard and wide radius "sleeper" ties.
Thank you, it's nice to get the old locos back in action. I'm either ambitious or a wee bit masochistic regarding the ballasting and the ties. I'll have to do a google search on the guy you mentioned who does the 3D print ties.
The guy is Austin Birkey from Austin's American Flyer Trains youtube channel. He manufactures a lot of items not just the ties. You can see the ties on his channel. I use them on my layout.
@@-MAILMAN Got it, thanks! (I think I've seen some of his videos.)
I like the track plan. Looks like you'll have a versatile layout. Look forward to the next update.
Thanks! It's nice to get my Flyer stuff back in action. Fiddled around with a few track plans and landed on this one... so far, so good! 🙂
It is nice to see everything working so relatively smoothly, especially with the camera on. I can spend hours setting everything up and testing before recording, then when the camera is running @%&*%. I did ballast my previous layout, the largest I have ever built. It took me months. Some of that ballasted track is on my current layout, ballast and all. I live near beaches so I use sand for ballast, and dirt, and grass. I placed paper grocery bags on the table top then put the sand where I wanted it and glued it with a mix of water, white glue and the proper color of acrylic paint. I also put double thicknesses of pieces cut from cardboard boxes between the ties and glued blackened pieces of balsa strips on the cardboard to match the ties on the black American Flyer rubber roadbed. It was a lot of work, but turned out looking very realistic.
Thanks Mark. I must admit I was rather surprised everything went so well... especially with that GP7. It's a really finicky little guy. I expect the ballast is going to take as long as yours did. I've pretty much decided to use a similar method, including the water and white glue mix. Worked well on my HO layout. Still considering the options regarding tint... I'm kinda shooting for a slightly grimy look. And, like you, I'll be adding ties. Just to make it really hard on myself, I've decided to use popsicle sticks (turns out they're just the right width to match the Flyer track ties). Glue a couple together, cut em to size and apply flat black paint. Repeat about a million times. I'm looking at it as a character building exercise.

Love the music choice - AND the trains!!
Thanks m'dear!
Love the traffic! Favorites: the Canadian National diesel passenger train and RDC.
Thanks for the positive feedback. You have great taste!!
You bought your RDC from me!! I added those N scale CN noodles to make it match the first VIA RDC when it was still CN! The partly scratched out front one is there!
I did indeed... and it's still one of my favourites. (I think the CN noodles were what clinched the deal for me.)
@@pauls-train-asylum-581 awesome. I had a photo in a book and realized my N scale decal sheet has some noodles the right size. I loved that RDC and I am therefore doubly glad you like it. I moved into large scale. I sometimes get a pang for my HO days - especially when I see vids like yours.
Great video and storyline.
