Are you frustrated with dog behavior in your work or home? Do you feel like your job is getting harder working with the dogs in your care or daily life?
You aren't a bad dog owner, and you aren't a bad dog pro! You've just haven't been told the truth about dog behavior. None of us have. Until now, you couldn't even find it if you tried.
Kim Brophey explains why our modern pet dogs are expressing unprecedented levels and severity of BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS, why the demand for trainers is through the roof, & families are struggling worldwide.
We have had it all wrong- dog behavior problems are not "misbehavior" but symptoms of welfare problems (oddly the "easy" life we give them isn't easy). Get ready to have your mind BLOWN with this information that you simply will not find anywhere else on earth.
If you love dogs (and especially if you work with them), you NEED the missing pieces of the puzzle - L.E.G.S. & Family Dog Mediation!

YOUR DOG is not broken, and YOU have not failed.
How do you REALLY get a "Good Dog"? By giving them a "Good Life" - a term that has been defined by leading animal welfare scientists concerned with the characteristics of optimal welfare as the gold standard for any animal living under human control and captive conditions. Because - guess what? Animals who have this "Good Life" standard of welfare do not have behavior problems. That's right- our dogs' behavior challenges are very often symptoms of their chronic confusion, frustration, and distress in their modern pet lives. The "easy" life of today's pet is not as easy as we think it is - and our dogs need our help.
Have you cycled through several dog trainers or methods?
There's a reason most families will cycle through multiple dog trainers hoping for a better outcome with the next one- “dog training” is quite often missing the point, and lacking the comprehensive picture that can finally provide clarity and relief for all parties. Contrary to what you've been told, it's not about the “carrot OR the stick”. It's not about compliance and conditioning. It's not about control. It's about meeting your dog where they are, for who they are, in recognition of all that they bring to the table in their unique recipe of interacting L.E.G.S. (Learning, Environment, Genetics, & Self).
Just as is the case with any individual animal on Earth, dogs are biological animals whose behavior is the collective product of the interaction between Nature AND Nurture. It's not one or the other like you've been told. A dog's genetics do not predict their behavior, and it's not "all how you raise them".
Rather, it is a complex orchestra of elements designed to interact in cooperative harmony for organisms filling distinct niches in various ecosystems. Captivity and controlled breeding have interrupted this natural system of checks and balances, and THAT is what results in "behavior problems" in our modern pet dogs.
So what do you do? How can you help your dog? The very first step is to get the TRUTH so that you can understand what might actually be happening for your dog or prevent issues from arising. Then, we have many resources to help you take your understanding and interventions to the next level to make the customized difference your dog needs to succeed as your companion!

This is absolutely epic!🙌🐾🙌❤️🙌🐾
Far too many resources wasted into dogs who have desire to self preserve!
Nando Brown is a bad ass trainer! 💯
Kim I like so much your down to earth insight and looking forward to read your book. Nothing strange the Flowconcept it's a natural way to be happy and do what is your passion and even better said your soul mission. My experince is that more federal or even dogs with more genetic diversity are often in flow and the purebred dog with their complex traits these days are less in a flow. And being in flow has nothing to do with stress or nervous chewing a ball for example.
Appreciate the details within this convsation in regard of behavior. It's not black or white but let say 50 shades of grey. I noticed and research that within the purebred dogs there are more shades also because their small genetics are a issue. I'm eager to find out if there are in the Netherlands or Belgium mentors from L.E.G.S., please let me know if there are. Kind regards , daniëlle.
I have a Lab (possibly mix, but mostly Lab for sure) who used to go from a quick eye to explosive chase - which was not good for my arm, her neck, or my doors / windows, but is part of her modified motor pattern (retriever: chase --> catch -->[new behavior: retrieve]). We've worked on it and she has now fully embraced the orient --> stalk part of the pattern on walks and will only chase with a release cue.... well, usually!
I am not a professional dog behaviorist. Are there any LEGS classes being offered for the "regular" person who lives with dogs?
I'm curious aswell and if it's also in a other langauge. I'm Dutch.
You guys so prescient of you all to open this topic up into the rather planned obsolescence viewpoint of animal health and wellbeing. Just this year 2023 I listened to maybe 4 or 5 animal summits to get an idea where the industry is in terms of guiding principles of dis-ease and healing. It is sad that after so many years, the structure remains essentially unchanged with only a new set of clothes or accessories. Not to mention the proliferation of the idea of an AI Avatar or Coach in both the animal and human world.
What disgusts me with USA is that you have KILLSHELTERS for unwanted animals. Where they kill the dogs and cats in horrific ways with gaschamber or heartstick😮
Those dogs i have now learned from previous owners to hate Rain. I try to learn them that Rain is ok when you have raincoat on. Hard after I had an Black Norwegian Elkdog&Dalmatian mix that loved to do 2 to 3 hours walk in cool weather. Now I have 2 totally opposite dogs. I miss him. 😢
Hi Kim, Good talk! Not sure where your located but I'm a dog behaviorist in LA some of the questions you pose I can answer. I think if we can get to a place where we stop making this a zero-sum and remove our personal opinion and feeling a lot of stuff will change.
Terrific talk! Thank you!
How refreshing. Bravo to all of you.
Unfortunately mainly Psychobabble.
Potential first time dog owner here. I have two young daughters (<5 years old) and am looking at getting a family dog. I'm kind of torn between a pitbull and a golden retriever. Which one do you guys think would make for a good first time dog owner with young kids and why?
Good question. Did you read Kim's "meet your dog" book. Highly recommended before getting any dog. Also depends on how much time you can dedicate to training and socializing your dog AND teaching your kids Do's and Don't with dogs. Personally I would wait until their older than 5
And that's why I love them.
me too!
The full LEGS course is fantastic and I can't recommend it highly enough. It offers insights and perspectives that are thought-provoking, deeply compassionate, and game-changing to anyone open to new information about dogs, their needs, and how we can give them their best life. The world feels kinder to me, knowing people like Kim Brophey are part of it!
I look at dogs brains, their behaviour etc. as similar to adhd (which I have), the impulsivity, the variability, the quick defence reactions are far more adhd than autism. I can see evolutionary benefits in both conditions, ADHD is far more suited to a nomadic/wild lifestyle where you had to be alert for other predators and dangers, and be able to seek out food, shelter etc., compared to the agricultural revolution which kept things in their place, and had routine (feed animals, weed etc.) and future planning for seasons like winter storage of food, an adhd person is far more likely to 'wing it' and live in the moment just like dogs and other animals do. big differences between humans to dogs is that dog bites are a death penalty, so our dogs can't have the chance to display that behaviour, regardless of the reason why, many dogs are in shelters just for being stroppy hormonal teens and some have killed others. (our kill rate to them still massively outweighs dog kills to humans). the problem becomes worse when you only allow one type of teaching and only certain tools, rather than accept that like some humans some dogs need different styles and tools to learn appropriate behaviours for them to live in our world. Although the root cause, personality, genetics, environment etc. should be considered in training to resolve the behaviour and create an understanding that those behaviours are wrong and they cannot do it.
Does the guest ever get to talk?
Please upload more video for us🙁.. ethologists are my hero❤️
We must pull back so Normal can be redefined to acommodate the ballooning human population. All animals are losing their normal habitat & space to move about in. In the 1970s there were 1 billion people on Earth. Now there are about 8 billion humans. Not enough room for anyone to act as they evolved or were selected to act - normally. We need new methods to navigate the artificial environment that this over-crowded world has become.
Great conversation! One of the things I would like to bring up in regards to the Malanois- as a person who has CPTSD, when you come from a totally controlled environment you are conditioned not to have your own autonomy. I agree that these specific breeds are chosen because genetically, they are easily shaped this way. Some eventually shut down because they are traumatized by aversion training and because they have such a strong drive to please they eventually burn out. Chewing is a learned method of self soothing. To help these dogs learn autonomy and confidence, we need to first work on creating secure attachment for them. Most of these pups have been raised with disorganized and anxious attachment. Once we address this properly and the dog feels safe, we can move forward 🙂
Yes!!!! Accountability. Our industry is killing dogs and hurting humans. Wish there was more to the video, but love this.
If you click on the reel at the bottom it will connect you with the full 23 minute video!
If humans bred for it, it can be bred out. When we watch house dogs let genetics take over, they "regress" back to normal. Detroit has watched dogs let loose become less "breed refined" after a few generations. You can tell breeds apart, but the behaviors become more similar to each. Acting less like the breed they were bred for.
The link to the review paper points to a local folder on your PC, no one will be able to access it.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2238694/ I think this is the link. It sounds like the right article anyway.
I have finely had a chance to sit down and listen to this conversation. Beautiful contribution from everyone. Thanks for having this conversation publicly. I love the filter idea. It takes identification with ideologies and ego, OFF THE TABLE. Its also so incredible to see so many people here that I've never seen before. It can feel very insular and echo chamber-ish in the facebook bubble. If your not part of any of the 'IN' crowds then it can feel isolating. But in the same vein, it can feel like tribalism, gang culture if you identify with whichever 'God' of the hour is speaking down to their decibels. Cultish. This conversation has been a breath of fresh air. I'm continuing to take steps everyday to delete the everyday infiltration of dog pro politics out of my life for my wellbeing. Im not part of ANYTHING anymore. I just saw huge power games and poorly behaviour within all the dog world structures to sit back and be part of any of it. I know there are other lone wolves out there too that have been bitten too bad. Its a shame because those voices get lost and unheard. Its often the voices that speak in a whisper have the most powerful message. Its been a privilege to hear authenticity here. Thank you Kim and Co. Rachel Meadows. xx
We humans will NEVER see any dog for who they are as long as we create an image in our heads of who they should be. To do this is to see the image in the head, NOT the actual being. Also, to do this is not love at all. We will never see them accurately as long as this continues. But, honestly, don't human beings do this in every damn thing? We see through filters all the time, the "me" being one huge pile of them, all created through past conditioning. This, of course, creates a distorted lens through which we see the world. The tragedy of all this is the ugly messes we create because of it, and the suffering it causes to all the other beings we share this planet with.
It’s NOT PUNISHMENT BASED TRAINING… unless you yourself with focus on creating a dog continuously and making him miserable experience.
I struggle with this. I now own two Newfies that I am determined to work. I won’t breed them but I am going to help them do what they were meant to do, cart, swim.. work
Such candid and courageous sharing, bravo!
I just completed the course and I am both overwhelmed and super excited, this video is very powerful and truly resonates with how I feel.
💓
Loved this!! The talk about processing really hit home for me. My child jas a processing disorder, which makes it difficult for her when processing information so I'm hyper aware of that kind of stuff. Super interesting to hear it in the context of dogs, as that had never occurred to me before!! Thank you!
One word: Amazing.
I like your content
can you guys talk about separation anxiety and how would you guys go about it?
Damn, who composed the music in this trailer?
isn't it amazing? It was stock for the video editor program on my laptop - an LG
The trailer lost my attention quickly with a bunch of questions and I didn't learn what the point of the video was.
Hi thank u dear....
Am v. interested in this
As a Certified Family Dog Mediator, having gone through the very extensive course for professionals, I was beyond impressed with how this has been so well put together into a 1 hour course for the general pet dog owner. I cannot recommend highly enough!!! This course is for YOU if you already have a dog, have adopted a dog, have just brought a new puppy home - OR are thinking of getting a dog. Before you decide on what breed and size to get, do yourself and your family a great favor by purchasing this 1 hour course that will change your life with dogs forever - and just might help you choose the right dog for your lifestyle.
Just went through this course and I'm so impressed! The content is clear, easily digestible, heart warming, educational and so incredibly important for every single dog caregiver to watch!!!! Thank you, Kim Brophey for creating this life changing course!!!
Hi thank u dear....
When?
The course opens on May 30.
What truth though? The ways we use them for work and for our benefit? In reality dogs’ nature is something we have obliterated with thousands of years of domestication. Whereas cats kept their instincts and natural behaviours intact. It takes cats 1 generation to go back to being feral, stay away from humans and not need them. I’d like to see the real behaviour and nature of dogs but I’d have to go back thousands of years in time. Dogs are too dependant on men, that’s the case in all countries including those where dogs roam free in the street and villages without owners. They still get close to humans because they need them to feed them and they have far too long been close to men to behave like wild animals.
The content of the TRUTH in this course doesn’t disagree with what you’re saying- you’ll want the whole scoop because it’s COMPLICATED and they need us to finally understand:)
You've clearly never been to a remote community where stray dogs have little to no interaction with humans. They survive on their own or die, sadly, but most of them are free from the behaviour issues created by "pet owners".
@@ihelpdogs not only I have but I lived there. Have you? They die yes. And they constantly seek contact with humans because they can’t survive on their own. I love all animals but I prefer to observe other species. The one humans have with dogs is stunted
@@rialalala I respect your interest in species other than dogs. In this case, and on the subject of dog ethology, a key feature that makes dogs remarkable is the the symbiotic relationship they have with humans. It is represented nowhere else in the animal kingdom. So to understand the modern dog is a noble pursuit; they are both simple and complicated at the same time. No one needs to be interested in dogs, but their relationship with humans is *far* from stunted.
@@Kiirkas I agree about it being simple and complex at the same time, depending on which lens you use. I guess what I mean by stunted is that it’s corrupted (sounds negative but isn’t meant to be) by years of dependence and proximity unlike with other species
Oh. Em. Gee. THANK YOU, Dr. Brophy for the work that you do! This will save lives and bring joy to so many. 💕🐶💕 Proud to be a Family Dog Mediator 🤗 Sarina Samson
I can't wait!
Can't wait for this to be released
This looks beautiful and promising! ❤️
Hi thank u dear....
Thank you for making all this information available for free. I am very grateful for your work is really helping our relationship with our lovely dogs
Chris Pachel, I appreciate so much about what you say. I am an RVT/ trainer and constantly feel like I carry the guilt of my clients. Thank you for saying that it doesn't have to be like that. We can put it aside and go back if needed. I couldn't agree more, often we don't have to go back once needs are met. If we don't have to it makes it even more pointless to carry it at all. This is such a helpful thing to remember in both the training and nursing lens. We need to provide good information as a nurse/trainer without holding onto the stress. We truly need more social worker professionals in the field. Our behaviour health matters too and we need specifically tailored professional help for our industry instead of unqualified managers/DVMs.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this conversation! Now how to get caregivers to calm themselves and remove their egos from the behavior of the dog to calmly observe and understand the dogs need to behave in a certain manner...
