"Because you've told me to make a serious character and proceeded to make it a butt-monkey and I don't enjoy that." I soooo despise this narrative of "poor DM vs bad player", I've seen groups of amazing players fail because of DMs chasing short-term self-gratification.

This is why you clarify to players "I will use your backstory, will you stick to this character?"

I had a player build three different characters before session 2…for the first campaign I ever DMed. I’m now turning the tables on all my players and changing the ttrpg system to something I can (hopefully) better adapt with, even if they change characters at the drop of a hat again 😅
