      These were 15* butr the angle dependds on the # of staves

    Very nice but how do you drill the hole through the top where the mill rod goes through?

    What angle are staves cut

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 ปีที่แล้ว

      These were cut at 15*. It’s figures by dividing 360 by the # of angled staves you want and then dividing the result by 2. Ex. 360/12=30. 30/2= 15

    How did you make the stave for the top piece without there being the hole in it?

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not a stave. I drilled the stave hole out to 1-3/8” and turned a plug that fit it. Left it a little long to go into the body.

    This is brilliant, I make a few salt and pepper grinders but the drilling is not easy. Will have a go at this method.

    Thanks for sharing an abundance of skills. May I ask, how do you keep the top piece of brass from unscrewing, everything I use the pepper mill? If I continue turning clockwise, the top wood jams against the bottom wood. When I turn it counter-wise, the top brass and the top wood unravels and comes apart in my hand. Thanks.

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never had that problem. I use pepper mill kits from Chef’s Specialties. There is a small “washer” with a square hole in it that installs in the top. Sounds like that is missing.

      If you want 2 1/2 ring (usual size for pepper mills), cut 12 trapezoids out of plank of wood, 3/4" or 7/8" high, 5/8" on the longer base, and the sides are on 75 degrees towards the smaller opposite side. In between strips are rectangular and your overall diameter will increase based on their thickens. The 12 trapezoids glued alone, will make 2 3/8" diameter ring, and with the inserts you can increase that to your desired diameter. There are couple or online calculators for segmented work , easy to use and very accurate. (blocklayer dot com and marleyturned dot com are the ones I like, but there are probably others too).

      360/#of desired stave. Then divide that # by 2. Ex: 360/12=30. 30/2=15. Set the saw for 15*

    What is the length of the stave and height? Also what is the width from angle to angle on the stave at the bottom? What is the thickness and height of the walnut pieces?

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Length of staves are 15" for a 10" grinder. All material is approximately 1" thick. The distance from angle to angle varies but is usually 1/2-5/8". Walnut was 1/8" thick I think.

    Any way you can do a video about that buffer/stand you were using?

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jkitchens71 - I use the Beall Buffing System. I’ve used their adapter to connect it to an antique electric motor I had lying around. Cobbled the stand together. I may do a buffing video on my new channel The Shop Teacher in the future if you’d like to follow me there. www.bealltool.com/products/buffing/buffer.php

    • @timgregory9456
      @timgregory9456 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      360/# of staves you want. Then divide that # by 2. Example: if you you want 12 staves like the one shown- 360/12= 30 30/2=15. I set the saw blade to 15 degrees
