Succulent winter protection (hopefully) on a budget

An inexpensive way to hopefully protect your succulents from frost & rain over winter in London. I have no idea if this will work but I have all my fingers crossed. I will do an update in May 2024

Cannas love a crappy British summer. They spend less time worrying about flowering and put their energy into foliage and tubers. Theyre bloody bonkers mate.
It's a coleus argentatus.
Hello from Texas. I just found your channel. Beautiful garden! Can’t wait for more videos…..
Lovely tour and new subbie here 👋
Thanks for subbing!
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
amazing tour!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can I have that Tetrapanex please 😀
The Begonia is called Sterling Silver & is part of a brand new (and quite rare) hardy Begonia collection called 'Lunar Lights' - supposedly hardy (as a deciduous plant) down to around -10 in ideal conditions (free draining soil/overhead cover) & may keep the leaves through a milder winter.
Thank you so much for letting me know
Garden looks great. Im jealous of how big it is!
Thank you, we're very lucky considering we're in west London. History of the house tells us that the guy who built the house and lived here first in the 30's built a lot of the adjoing streets so decided he'd have a very big garden by making his neighbours gardens a bit smaller!
Great garden nice mix of plants
Good growth especially your cannas. Tree fern in pot needs to be in the ground or bigger pot and most importantly somewhere cool and shady. Garden looks good overall. Camera work is a bit disorientating though
Thanks for the advice on the fern. I'm afraid the camera work is unikey to improve, I do these videos for myself so that I can see how things change from year to year. Glad you enjoyed the tour
Awesome thanks for sharing this
My pleasure, I'm amazed that so many people enjoy it. Not exactly Taylor Swift numbers but that's not why share do it!!
Really love your garden. How long has it taken to get it to this ? This is my first year of moving towards the ‘exotic’ and there’s so much to learn !
Hi Kate, thanks for your kind comments. I started it around 4 years ago and have added to it bit by bit. To be honest there is probably too much in the borders now but I blame my wife for allowing me too much time in the garden centre 🙂 If I could offer one bit of advice it would be to try adding to your garden with cuttings and growing your own from seed, I spend goodness knows how much time on TH-cam watching people all over the world growing amazing plants for nothing. I'm not sure where you live but if it's UK then I'd be happy to send you a few rooted cuttings, I do so many I end up throwing lots on the compost heap! Good luck and keep growing!!
@@francisgeorgemurphy Hi Frank, I know cuttings and seeds would be the most economical way to fill out the garden but I don’t have a greenhouse and because we get cold winters (Bedfordshire) my cold frames are jam packed with my much treasured agapanthus. I successfully stored a few bananas and cannas in the garage and started off a couple of colocasia bulbs on windowsills. We are also on sandy soil which doesn’t hold moisture too well. I can’t go out without popping into a garden centre or B&M and most times come out with a new plant. I’m puzzled where people get ginger plants and persicaria because I don’t see them anywhere. My husband will be back from a trip to Canada today and no doubt he’ll tour the garden later on to discover how many new additions have arrived in the 10 days he’s been away !
Thank you! I started the front left corner about 4 years ago but most of it has grown over the last two to three years. Thank goodness for You Tube, that's where I learn everything!
Great video, I like the commentary. I do similar in my videos. I see some of the same flowers in my garden, lots I don't though. I am moving to using pots more now as the weeds and the green forest that's taken over the garden is just a slug paradise. The slugs also attacked my sunflowers badly and had a go at the peppers and runner beans. More though when they started growing early on and not so much now they've established. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks James, sad as it is I've been counting how many slugs and snails I've "removed" from the garden during my 11pm sorties with a torch and it's over 2500 in the past month! I just watched your video from May and loved the Jacobs Ladder, I'm off to the garden centre!!
A Tropical garden only gets bigger and better... unless there is a 2022/2023 winter! Fantastic video, thanks for sharing
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've had a look at your super borders and realise that I've gone the opposite to "more is less"! You've got way more colour in yours which I really like. The problem is I hate taking plants out and love taking cuttings and growing more, then I can't chuck them away or give them away so end up planting them. It'll have to stop sometime :-)
Fantastic! You have a stunning garden.
Thank you, I listened back to this one, my commentary is appalling but it was originally just for me. Glad you enjoyed it.
should be a very bountiful area that, good luck!
Pointless channel. Go away
