How much do you water in the summer?
On hot days that we have been having, I water every other day. Also I have about a foot of wood chips to help retain moisture. My banana plants are on the East side of the house, so they get morning sun and afternoon shade.
Mango seed color is important. Carefully remove the husk. Watch the youtube videos about planting the seeds. Green is the best seed color. Then pink, followed by white, gray, brown, and black. Gray is not a good color. Asian or Hispanic stores often have mangos with healthier seeds.
Very informative. I've been wanting to get mango fruit at the grocery store. You think the seed from it would grow if it was potted?
Thanks for watching. Most of the seeds will grow. If it is a mono embryonic seeds, you may want to graft it eventually with a known variety that you like, but new varieties are created from monoemryonic seeds. Sometimes they taste good and sometimes they don't.
nice job. My ice cream bean only got about a foot or two tall before it died. Never got to taste one.
Did your die from the cold in the winter? They don't like temperatures below freezing and need to be protected.
@@edibletropicaltrees I think it was too much direct sun, transplanted it, and should of shaded it the first year or two till it acclimated to its new spot.
I'm in Mesa, Arizona and mine has always been in direct sun with no problems. I do use sulfur to lower the pH of the soil, so it can absorb nutrients better. It got a little too cold in winter and I didn't protect it and the top branches froze a little, but other than that mine has been growing great.
Hi Mel can you show us what's the best way to separate those lil seedlings that clump together when you germinate seeds of the ice cream bean tree. Also when's the best time to separate them?
There is one seed inside each white pillow. Sometimes it looks like different sections, but it's best not to break them apart or you will damage it.
Here in the tropics white fly & mealy bugs love infesting guava plants especially under the leaves. How do you treat infestations of these pests & how often would you treat the plant as preventative measures?
Such an interesting shape
Thanks for watching. They are several different shapes, but they are my favorite.
Beautiful tree do you have bricks with names under each tree? Are those bricks still available anywhere? Thank you.
Don't have bricks for all the trees. A few bricks were donated by that company as an advertisement to try and sale more.
Thanks for the mixture for getting rid of fungus gnats. I gotta try it
The first time I use that mix for gnats, there was over 100 dead gnats at the bottom, within one hour.
That’s a nice tree . Where did you get this cool tree ? I’m interested in one . Are you able to send me a cutting???. I’ll pay for shipping and handling. I’m in Los Angeles.
What climate zone are you in? I grow a lot of trees from cuttings. Mulberry trees grow pretty fast. PM me.

Hi Mel, are u selling these date palm?
Not yet, I usually wait 1 year from the time we remove the pups.
@@edibletropicaltreesthank you
N FL Thanks
Thanks for watching.
I have a papaya my friend grew from seed and gave me. We planted it in the ground in the spring of 2023. It’s probably over 10’ tall. Very wide. No fruit yet. What should I look for?
To promote fruit growth add a fertilizer high in Phosphorus and Potassium. These two vitamins help in producing flowers and fruiting.
What method do you do to get the oil from the seed?
Lovely. Are ants pollinators for Soursops, Sugar apples, Atemoya etc?
It takes 3 to 5 years for Soursops to set fruit even if they get flowers. In their native land beetles are the pollinators. If you don't have the right pollinators, you may have to hand pollinate them.
@@edibletropicaltrees ok great thanks again
Is the website under the tree for plants? I love Longans, but I prefer Rambutans😊
Thanks for watching. I grow a lot of different kinds of tropical trees. I do agree the Rambutans do taste better. We do have a Facebook page also: Mesa AZ Tropical Fruit Trees. That page shows a lot of different types of trees that I'm growing. I like to encourage people to grow different types of trees. My cousin and I are also members of the Arizona Rare Fruit Growers group. We have a month meeting where we can share ideas and scions. We have a bi-yearly tree sale.
Gonna be a good year for Longans in my garden too… Modesto, ca
Thanks for watching. Good luck with your Longans.
Thank you for a very informative video! Watching from South Carolina. I have been growing Moringa for several years and love it!
Thanks for watching. I've been eating the Moringa Tree leaves, flowers, and pods for over 15 years and feel I am healthier because of them.
There are two Longans at this garden, Biew kiew and Sri chompoo. Longans grow nicely in the low hot deserts of Arizona. The Biew Kiew was planted in 2000 and is the best variety easily available in my opinion. It was damaged in the 2007 freeze but easily recovered.
Thanks for that information Monty.
I keep trying to grow them here. I find the Cavendish types quite slow-growing in our cool summers here in the UK. I have a few other varieties that seem to grow better in our climate, like Rajapuri, Dwarf Brazillian and Dwarf Orinoco. I do grow Dwarf Cavendish in a container in the greenhouse though.
Thanks for watching. I agree with you the Cavendish is a little slower grower. My Dwarf Orinoco is faster growing and the only one with bananas growing on it right now. I also have Regular and Dwarf Grand Nain, and Nam Wah.
Your tree looks great Mel - I've never seen one this large in Phoenix. What year did you plant it, and what variety is it? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. This tree is a Sri Chompoo and is in a garden that my cousin Monty and I help take care of, so I'm not sure exactly how old it is.
I'm in Mesa as well. Do you sell any trees or seeds? Would like to grow some mangos and passion fruit here. We do have some taro, sweet potato, and plantains/bananas growing at our house now.
Thanks for watching. You can actually buy different varieties of Mangos 🥭 at Makong Market on South West side of Main Street & Dobson.
Great video, I pray for your concrete slab however. 😢
I've been growing Moringa trees for over 15 years and have planted them 18 inches from block walls and slabs with no problems. They have more of a tap root that grows down like a carrot.
I just got a fig tree 2 months ago bout to my knee. How long before i can realistically expect fruit
Each variety of fig tree is different, if it's in a container or in ground and it also depends on what climate zone you are in.
The one at my house has been 1foot tall for like 4years
Is it in a container or in the ground? They like to put down a tap root, so if it's in a container, they won't grow as fast.
@@edibletropicaltrees it just sits on a brick patio in a pot.
That's why it's not getting any bigger. As soon as the tape root hits the bottom of the container, it will stop growing.
Great job, Mel! Hopefully, these ones hold on and ripen 🤞
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I'm really hoping to be able to taste them this year.
Very exciting!
Nice!
Thanks!
Hi Mel i have a seed grown tree too. Fortunately she started flowering within the first year as you know I'm in the tropics. However she flowered but didn't fruit she's flowering again a few months later. My question is how often should she flower & fruit during the year. Also what are her main polinators. She looks very healthy & happy in her container & she's in full sun too.
The main pollinators are bees. They usually only flower only once, but can flower for up to 2 months.
@edibletropicaltrees ok thanks. I gotta get some bees
Sometimes you can attract more bees with other flowering plants that the bees really like.
Lancaster CA zone 8B. 4 year old tree on Nemaguard rootstock. It's one my favorite. It has rich aromatic taste and is extremely juicy. Sometimes you get lucky Sams and Costco have them for sales under the label "California Nectarine" but they don't taste good when picked too early for the supermarket. This variety makes perfect taste when fully ripened on the tree and you need to give it full sun exposure. How to tell is it has a slight give when pressed and is 100% reddish. Best when even the seed is turned red. We've been getting more heat this year so I got a 2 week earlier harvest than last year. FYI: it's 120F this whole week of July 4th. There is a catch though if you over water, you'll loose aromatic flavor while getting more watery sugar juices.
PS just like all of my peaches and nectarines. This variety blooms from March to April, absolutely stunning beauty. Never heard of Desert Joe, I would love to hear your review. This year of 9 different varieties. I giving myself the award to Galaxy peach. It's sooo dope, just like a Stark yet bigger and more juicier and better gourmet flavor.
On peaches my favorite is Desert Gold. And nectarines my favorite is Desert Dawn. They are all delicious, those are just my favorite ones. It's been 118° F here also.
So many goodies in your garden
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I'm The Crazy Tree Guy. I have over 400 trees growing. I want to be able to pick fruit 365 days a year. I like encouraging others to plant more trees also.
@edibletropicaltrees fantastic mission. I'd be like an Alice in Wonderland in your garden I'm sure.
I know I have seen ginger in a grocery store. Do they have turmeric also or do you buy that somewhere else?
I bought the Turmeric at an Asian Market. I've never seen it at a regular supermarket. Asian Markets have a lot of things like Jack Fruit, Mamey Sapote, Durian, etc. that I've been able to buy and plant seeds and grow.
You can't grow a Kent mango from a seed. Kents have monoenbryonic seeds. That means the seed's DNA is not a replica of the mother. Don't waste your time trying to get a Kent from a seed. You can only get a Kent from a grafted tree.
I grow a lot of different types of Mangos from seeds. If they are monoemryonic seeds, then I graft a known variety to that tree.
@@edibletropicaltrees Look at the title of your video. My comment stands. You can't do that.
Great information thank you.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing the idea of a moringa fence. I watched this from New Zealand. Auckland. I planted seven seeds in pods three years ago, five came out as little plant. I put them under the roof facing the sun in winter. the first year, all the stems disappeared, two of them regenerated the next year. the rest did not show up. I now have two of them, I cut them into about 1.5 meter tall and put them in my greenhouse. Your fence idea inspired me to grow more of them but how can I be sure that some of them will survive the winter here if I plant them directly into the ground?( about 1 or 2 degree C in July.)
Moringa trees don't really like cold weather. I've heard some people during the cold weather, cut them back and putting a wire fence around them and fill it with straw, to try and keep them warmer during the cold weather. It doesn't get cold enough where I live in Mesa, Arizona to worry about the weather.
Just moved from Los Angeles to Nebraska. Thank you for the reminder to sprout more of these seeds!
Thanks for watching. I have 20 Moringa trees growing at my house.
@@edibletropicaltrees I hope to catch up to you one day!
Where did you buy this variety?
I know I bought it on the Internet, but I don't remember exactly where.
Figs are so nice. Never seen these!
These are a little more rare. I got cuttings from someone in the Arizona Rare Fruit Growers group. That's were I get a lot of rare things I'm growing. I think they have gardening groups like this in most states. I also get fruit at the Asian Markets and get seeds from them to grow.
Nice!
Thanks for the. It tasted so good!
Is this a breba or main crop?
Thanks for watching. This is the first main crop Fig. This tree was only a cutting 18 months ago.
@@edibletropicaltrees thanks for your response. I have rooted two cuttings of Nixon Peace this year and hoping to put one in the ground next year. It is such a fast and vigorous grower.
Yes it is a fast grower. Other Fig trees that grow fast are: Peter's Honey, Panache Tiger, and Yellow Long Neck.
What zone are you in? I had one I planted in ground cut to 3 ft tall and stuck a big 3’ wide tomatoe cage stuffed with leaves for insulation. Zone 8- but got down to about 15 degrees for two nights. Came back but then the branches were so slow to grow and eventually just died altogether. Will try cutting down to ground I guess….any other tips? I really don’t want to just grow in pot.
Thanks for watching. I'm in zone 9b, so it doesn't get too cold for them in my area. Moringa trees don't like cold weather. They are such fast growing trees, growing in containers doesn't work very well. Cutting them back and putting the cage around them, like you did, is the best way to try and get them through the winter in colder areas, because they don't like colder weather.
That's pretty amazing. How are you rooting these? Looks like you use a humidity dome? I'm trying to root some Black Madeira in my garage. It's been 2 weeks and no roots yet, I think it might be too hot in there.
I put cuttings in 16 oz clear cups so I can see when they get roots. Then I put another cup over the top of the cutting to help with moisture. Black Madeira are slower growing, so may take a little longer to root.
Good info!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!
Thanks for watching.
Great informative video Mel, watching from City of Brisbane which is in the State of Queensland in Australia
Thanks for watching and giving your location.
Try durian fruit next time , it’s also my favorite too!
Thanks for watching. They had some Durian fruit at the Asian Market also, but it was in the freezer, so the seeds wouldn't have been viable. Sometimes they have fresh Durian, so next time they have fresh Durian I will get some and do a video.
@@edibletropicaltrees I agree with you , the durian fruit is usually preserved in the freezer . If you see the fresh one next time try it , a lot people don’t like the way it smells but I really eating it! It’s pricey than the jackfruit !
They're not the easiest plant to graft. Somehow a fungus usually attacks both the scion & grafting union. The seeds are super easy to germinate sometimes they're already germinating in the fruit. I'm wondering if you sanitize the grafting tools as well as probably treating both the rootstock & scion with some kinda anti fungal treatment would minimize or eliminate fungus infestation?
This is my favorite !
That is an interesting plant. I like the idea of helping with gophers.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
That is an interesting plant. I like the idea of helping with gophers.
What soil media are you using? Impressive growth
You can use cactus potting soil from the store, but I'm actually using 30% Peat Moss, 30% mulch, 20% Sand, and 20% Perlite.
