Metallica - S&M ALBUM REVIEW #metalmonday
When you get all that money you get out of touch and you start getting greedy
This really was when socialism started to reinfect the West. Metallica wasn't bitching about pennies, they were ignited by principles. Dave was just selling poor people their resentment back to them. The easiest sell in the world.
john could have had more talent than we knew but was most likely tarnished by drugs and more than likely yoko
Lars was 100% correct. Good on him on going after Napster.
Great video, lads. Great soundtrack album.
Thanks Pat. 👍🏻
Hmm. Seems to me this has come full circle.🤔
I run hot and cold on the studio sides of the album. I commend them for exploring and trying new things, but I also admit that its inconsistant at best. Yet saying that, for me I still like it better than A Monentary Lapse of Reason and The Divison Bell where the tensions within the band were starting to become evident. And I would not introduce anyone new to Pink Floyd with this album.
Ah Division Bell is excellent. 👌🏻
Thanks lads, great video. Havent listened to this in so long, i liked it but now im going in a little more sceptical now tonight as i listen again
Thanks Danny. 👍🏻
Well done lads. Great video.
Thanks Pat. 👍🏻
As a broke 17 year old I was pissed when Napster was shut down. Fully get where lars was coming from though. It shouldn’t matter how many more records you’ve sold. You’ve work your ass off to get to where you are and now people are stealing from you.
Didn't age well ....ouch. Here we sit end of 2024 with a music industry practically nonexistent 😮 And all the bad music resulting from it
You missed it about the Grateful Dead. If you regard music as a live experience, they are one of the greats. Their live concerts were awesome. If you regard music as a recorded experience, they're OK. Consider that, when he heard about the Edison recording machine, John Philips Souza worried about the future of music. Up until then, music had been a personal experience between the performer(s) and their audience. People, in the same room, sharing a common musical experience. The Edison recording machine changed all of that to the current point where recorded music, made in a studio (perhaps by artists who aren't even in the same room), is considered the standard. Very different from live music. (Very different from pre-Edison, when most of the music that one experienced was made by them self, humming a tune.) For many years, the live experience was the "real" music. The "lesser" studio music tried to capture the immediacy and authenticity of live performance. Things have changed to where the studio music is regarded as "real" and live performance tries to imitate the studio sound. Pete Seeger, who could wave his left hand at audiences and get them singing along to songs they'd never heard before, in harmony. Taylor Swift is a hugely popular and talented artist who can do a costume change in seconds. Which is a better musical experience, singing along with Pete or watching Taylor on the big screen in an stadium. Which experience is better music? I contend that the definition of "good music" has changed over the years. The Grateful Dead are on the live music side of that divide. A special experience for their audience in a way that can't be captured on video or on tape.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the detailed comment. 👍🏻
Fitting for this album: th-cam.com/video/JtvGR8UX1L0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RVqgp8noOm94jOh5
I can't stand ACDC for more than 5 songs at a time. They are too simplistic AND repetitive
🤔
They are indeed Three Chord Wonders.
They haven't recorded 12 albums, they have recorded the same album 12 times.
@@MACPOWIsFreedom Brian Johnson's voice gets worse every passing year. He sounds like Donald Duck.
Dave Grohl has been in one of the most over rated bands of all time, but it's not the Foo Fighters.
🤔
Theft is theft.
I wonder what he listens too...
😎
Andy Edwards Really..
Yep.
Really
9. Grateful Dead, sort of like the Allman Bros band, but with more heroin. Allowed fans to record and share their live music with few caveats. Extremely talented guys. "Dead Heads" are their rabidly enthusiastic fans and will follow the band from venue to venue. As a band, they are everything they are supposed to be.
Such a silly notion. Whether a band is overrated or not is entirely dependent on personal taste.... Having said that, I don't disagree with this list. Having said that, what is the top ten highly rated bands that deserve their ranking at the top? I can't think of one. I can think of a few that are grossly underrated.
👍🏻
Now Dave has extra mouths to feed. How that new baby ?
I agree with a few choices. We need to do a top 10 rock stars with children out pf wedlock. Kiss is my number 1
🤣 Lets do it. But will have to caveat with “that we know of”…
@ not fact checked
Edwards is awful and hes all clickbait. My bad for clicking on this vid. Thought u were gonna rip him. Instead u just took his video and commented. I wont be back. Cheers !
🤔
Controversial list. Dead and GNR, definitely NOT overrated. Dead are brilliant studio songwriters and musicians. Foos and Kiss, correct, both sucky, bland, corporate sound. Joy Division and Marillion are off my radar. I could expand my knowledge a bit I guess. The rest I could see on the list, but I would not put them here.
This comment section is further proof that many people don’t understand the difference between “overrated” and “great”. The better the band the more easily they can be overrated in someone’s opinion. And you should have played Andys video and reacted in real time… at least then your viewers would have a better sense of why he listed these bands.
🤔
Rock bands influenced by Queen? Right off the top of my I head I can think of Metallica, Extreme, Def Lepard, Nirvana, Foo Fighters & Guns n' Roses (ironically the last two are on this list). Axl Rose repeatedly called Queen his favorite band and Freddie Mercury his favorite singer. Just look at the rock bands who were at the Freddie Mercury Tribute.
Fair point, for the record, I don’t think Queen are overrated, but Mr. Jones Edwards does..
I like a bit of Joy Division occasionally but the mood has to be right. The Grateful Dead are great but only in small doses. Kiss should be given kudos for replicating UK Glam in the US. The Foo Fighters have a handful of superb songs but not enough to fill out all of their albums. I don't know much about Motley Crue to be honest. The Beach Boys are a great mellow listen but they aren't really Rock. Queen are a good fit for modern listeners but weren't as big back then as some would have it. The Floyd are hard to rate. Cheers.
Thank you for the detailed feedback. 👍🏻
I have no clue who Andy Edwards is but I now know he's a bit of a tool.
🤣
You're getting confused with New Order and Joy Division. Joy Division are definitely not electronic or keyboard music. You can't say they're overrated, when you haven't even listened to them or know what you're talking about.
🤔
Some of the bands ( two or perhaps three ) on the list are open for debate yes, but as you mentioned in the beginning of the video, whoever that Andy Edwards guy is, he is only trying to be provocative imo.
He loves to stir it, but he is hilarious! 🤣
Even ON LSD "The Dead" SUCKS!!!
🤣
It's about control over your art, not money. The radio played a stolen MetallicA song (I disappear) and played it over radio before it was finished. That's the point.
Kiss are very underrated Because of their image Many great musicians are Kiss fans and with very solid musical reasons
🤘🏻
Kiss is objectively terrible
Marillion overrated ??? You got to be kidding me ! Just listen to Clutching At Straws (a masterpiece) or Marbles (amazing album) ! They are great musicians, especially Steve Rothery with long beautiful guitarsolo's. If you only know Kayleigh, then you can't say anything about Marillion !
Andy’s opinion, not mine. I plan to take the time to do a deep dive into their catalogue at some point. 👍🏻
Not to mention crowd funding, holding 3 day sold out festivals, still touring after 35+ years. The fact that they don't have corporate backing and do everything themselves is a head nod to being true the music.
@@WallofGain You are in for a treat, it's really good and emotional music !
Kiss, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Grateful Dead and John Lennon [ post Beatles ] are all embarrassingly overrated in my books
Pure rubbish. one of the greatst songs written and im an Athiest. th-cam.com/video/lpd4jzKA4SA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mwNQDM4xEKtK5HZm
I think Andy actually mentions this song as one he really likes.
The Beach Boys had much much better harmonies than the Beatles, and if you listen to any of their 60s hits, like Help Me Rhonda, you can compare the intricate literate harmonic construction of the Beach Boys as opposed to the Beatles just throwing together random harmonies one at a time. If you listen to "Smile", you'll understand why people compare the bands, "Smile" is more 70s prog than Sgt. Pepper, which sounds like an mmitation.
Thanks for stopping by. I must give them another listen.
@@WallofGain The album "Summer Days" is their breakout, it is like a more harmonically sophisticated, musically literate version of "Hard Day's Night" or "Help". Unfortunately, this is also where Brian Wilson started taking LSD, he famously wrote the melody to "California Girls" during his first trip. From this point on, he was nearly constantly stoned, so his brain fully disintegrated by 1968, Smile is the last thing he did worth a damn, and he only recorded it properly after he partially recovered decades later. It's an ever-so-slightly happier version of what happened to Syd Barrett.
Describing the type of music of joy division as electronic music without guitars......and without using the term postpunk.
Thanks for the feedback.
Dark Side of the Moon itself is enough to keep Pink Floyd off this list. An absolute masterpiece. And it’s bracketed by Meddle and Wish You Were Here, that’s enough to set them in the top rank of bands
Agreed. They shouldn’t be on this list. Thanks for the feedback.
Final cut grows on you. It is a masterpeice
I must give it some more time.
Pink floyd are hands down, the best band ever. Vastly under-rated
These so called Pennies is why we pay for higher ticket prices for Concerts now days. Artists don't make anything on record sales like back in the day before Napster .
Young and dumb and now a bit of a hypocrite
Great video Rob. You make it so interesting.
Ah thanks Pat. 👍🏻 Great to see your channel blowing up. I would encourage anyone who likes good music to subscribe to @closetotheedge-prog for brilliant album reviews and rankings from Irelands biggest prog rock fan! 🇮🇪
Obey your master and push it to 11.
Oh yeah!! 🤘🏻
Thanks so much for the information! Can’t wait 😊
So I guess in that logic, who cares what your paycheck looks like from week to week if it drops 40% what does it matter right?
Dave grolh barley paid his bandmates while hes got like 300 million dollars
🤔
@WallofGain on Howard Stern Dave said he made about 15 million from nirvana and Taylor was like damn I wish I was in nirvana. N Dave is just a straught ass hole so I can see him paying his band mates the bare minimum
Napster Hater Lars Ulrich literally is crying about Not getting a Composer Credit on Metallica Songs like Phantom Lord or Metal Militia that he didn't even have anything to do with Creating .
Not having queen as overrated .
Yeah, I disagree with him on that one.
@@WallofGain overexposed because of the bohemian rhapsody movie perhaps. They were underrated before that came out
