Vertical farming is very energy intensive and has less profit margin. Only way to make it feasible is by increasing the carbon footprint.

I have been in projects world wide for nearly 50 years now, on just about every process industry you can think of, and none are more complex than CEA. People in the business have no idea how complex it is, or how to make the most out of the industry, I find it very depressing. Too many blinkered people who total fail to look at the big picture and the opportunities it raises. CEA has progressed in the last 10 or so years but is still miles behind where it should be. As an engineer I look at the industry from an engineers perspective, but I also look at it from my project management experience as well. Most problems should have been dealt with in the very first stage of the design, when potential owners/designers did their initial risk schedule, but I have not heard of anyone yet doing one. People have not looked at designs from an operational and maintenance perspective, just see how difficult it is to access a system to replace an LED light. Nobody has an automated system for checking lights or changing them, they all need human access, which means the loss of about 50% of the floor space, plus the risk of having humans in the grow space. Even a site selection process, building in towns in a warehouse on some industrial estate is wrong on so many levels, this is generally peoples first mistake they make on such a project. The biggest problems in the industry are ignorant funders, they are not expected to know the technical ins and outs of the industry, but they should know risk management, and the realities that should be in a business plan. How many presentation have I seen that are pure waffle about climate, food deserts, and yet they have no idea on what or how they grow, no contingency plans, no idea what to do if energy prices or logistics cost rises. In the UK before the Ukraine war energy costs were going up about 10% a year, but food inflation 3-4%, no project can survive those kind of challenges, especially on some little warehouse on an industrial estate somewhere. Local property taxes are increasing, because councils are going bankrupt due to bad financial management. Same with cost of water, and minimum wage rates. Still people are talking of CEA/Vertical farms as being one and the same world wide and cutting and pasting factories all over the world, and yet no thought of the differences in costs are resources. How idiotic is that? Just look at the differences in energy prices in the USA let alone energy prices between Europe and Africa, same with labour costs. I really want to see the industry do well and I had hoped to see at least one good design before I die, but I am still waiting and losing hope.

As soon as someone mentions spraying the roots , its clear they have no experience of genuine aeroponics. The real difference between hydroponics and aeroponics is control.
