History of the Capilano Suspension Bridge
As a crazy person, this breaks my heart
These buildings were already 200 years old in these pics... bricks dont decompose that fast ,neither does old steel.... That was a castle... how blind could one be. All these propertys are riddled with tunnels that nobody takes credit for.... this was joined underground to riverview and woodlands. So many questions about that property and area. None of it adds up. Alot of cover ups spanning many topics
Wow what a great video!! Brings back memories of the old Vancouver. How times have changed so much when life was so simple and pure back then
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
great video, great channel. just found you, as a lifelong bc resident it's nice to see. one tiny suggestion would be for mic quality improvement just for the sake of growth, great content regardless
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I'm always working to improve the quality of the channel.
The vessel shown at 5:40 is not a ferry boat, it is a cable ferry, the longest such salt-water crossing in existence, so it is said, serving the Denman Island--Buckley Bay route. Its proper name is "Baynes Sound Connector" but islanders usually call it "the B.S. Con," "the Drag Queen," and sometimes rude names with fecal connotations during one of its numerous service interruptions, mostly for mechanical issues. It is seriously under-powered and over-taxed for the task at hand This route once had a perfectly good vessel, MV Quinitsa (still in service elsewhere). A decade ago the B.S. Con was pressed upon islanders despite much protest and warnings about the problematic nature of its propulsion system, all in the name of projected significant cost-of-service savings. The protests were gaslighted in best bureaucratic fashion; the warnings re its inadequacies have largely been realized; the savings have proved imaginary. BCF at best has been silent or evasive re maintenance costs, cable replacement is more frequent and costly than projected. It might be said this imbroglio is little brother to the "fast cats" mess in the 90s, certainly it is not BCF's finest hour. But, so long as it does not fail entirely it will persist as there appears to be no space in BCF's capital plan for a remedy of this own-goal mistake. I know all this to be true because I live there.
BC Ferries has known for years that the wake from their ferry runs in the Active Pass is eroding the shoreline, especially on Maine Island, but they don't care because it is making the Indian Reserve site there smaller. It was brought to the attention of one of their marine biologists and she said, "My bosses are not going to be happy about this." Then she disappeared, she couldn't be reached, and BC Ferries never brought anyone else around to have a look.
BC Ferries should sail in weather other than calm or a light breeze. They used to sail in pretty much any weather conditions but seem to be wusses these days.
We quite often sit on those yellow seats in white rock promenade on our dog walks. Was saying to my wife the other day how surprisingly well they’ve held up! Considering the constant weather and salt. Another great video!
I sat on them the other day when I did the polar bear swim at the pier! Brings back memories!
This video doesn't mention current ferry routes. Can I use BC Ferries to reach, let's say Skagway?
@@drgwdrgw BC ferries do not leave Cdn waters. This is more of a “history” video than a current route availability video. Keep searching, I’ll bet SOMEONE has posted it.

Quick question: Why wouldn’t you ask for permission from original content creators? I’d have said yes, if you’d approached me with your idea and my original footage‘s purpose in it.
@@StevestonShips I read somewhere on here that he had ”live and learn” admission. We all try to make decisions based on our ability but sometimes we mess up. Spilt milk. He fixed it due to the take down so I’d say the proverbial barn door was closed.
@StevestonShips This was video was definitely a life lesson for me and this channel. A mistake I will do my utmost best to avoid in the future. My appologies for not requesting permission. Going forward, I will be reaching out to content creators prior to using their footage for future videos.
Well done! Most enjoyable. I usually don't seem to stay engaged very long but I watched every second. Question, does the original creator call you out or is there some kind of UTub bot that decides you infringed?
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. In this case it was the original creator after the video was up for couple days. In the case of music, a bot catches it immediately. In my earliest videos I had to mute the opening music as the channel continued to grow.
Super interesting! Thanks for this, although I disagree it's the tunnel is the "massive bottleneck" it's the population that's created the bottleneck!
Just discovered your channel and subscribed....looking forward to binge watching your past content.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the channel!
I never even thought about the BC Ferry history before but as soon as I saw this video I was extremely interested!! I’m grateful to learn all these cool things from your videos.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
And in my own personal opinion,And our Blessed, interesting and scenic Pacific Northwest's Canadian/Royal Canadian major city called Vancouver,British Columbia --- Canada's ( True North Strong and Free ) historic, old and classic 1800's Victorian --- era " Gastown " tourist attraction, site and destination is my most favorite heritage part of our super natural Canadian/Royal Canadian Province of British Columbia. And our " Gastown " tourist attraction still gives, still offers and still provides our 1800's styles of lampposts that consisted of 8 or 9 lamps or light bulbs as well as our famous, legendary and known 1800's " Gastown " steam clock that shoot --- out hot steams and whistles periodically that is located in the corner of Cambie Road and Water Street. And and also that includes our late 1800's Canadian/Royal Canadian developed, built and constructed architectural building structures and also the 1800's types of cobblestone streets that can be seen in and around " Gastown " core. And personally,And I am actually " a frequent visitor " of our " Gastown " tourist destination. And also that can be found nearby is our historic, old and classic Canadian Pacific Railway Main Train Station that was erected, built and constructed during the early 1900's as well. And also the heritage Hudson's Bay Company's Main Department Store architectural building structure is also located a few blocks away from our classic Canadian Pacific Railway Main Train Station.
The fast ferries were a mistake, just not a well thought out idea. However the next (right wing) government coming in and deciding to "punish" BC Ferries with quasi-privatization and punish BC shipbuilding by seeking foreign builders exclusively was an even bigger mistake. To this day, I do not know why the current NDP government did not being it back to being a full Crown Corporation, because the service problems under the "corporate cheapskates" just multiplied to the point where it reached peak absurdity in 2022. The foreign-built Coastal Class vessels seem to be lemons, having had huge propulsion problems that should not crop up in ships that young. Because of that, the very old BC built vessels are still in rotation years later than they should have been. I am glad that BC Ferries is planning to build more major vessels, but they are still ruling out BC/Canadian shipyards as if they have some sort of prejudice against them.
Great video!
build a bridge to vancouver island. BC ferries is a huge ripoff
So you're ok (I assume you pay BC and Cdn tax) with the suggested price of a bridge that could just be worse and may cost even more... as a better "deal"? Either come up with your calculations of how it's a rip off compare that with 115 billion + 900 MM per year or buy boat buddy.
@ bc ferries canceling sailings for no reason other than to get more people on board is bullshit. BC ferries constantly raising rates because there is ZERO competition is bullshit. Fuel surcharge? Bullshit. Fuck BC ferries, when there is a bridge you can stick to your stupid, slow little boat ride.
Great video, and fantastic clips! Where did you find and get the archival footage?
Thank you. The majority of old video footage and imagery I use is found through provincial and city archives. Future videos I will provide more attribution to where clips are sourced from.
Thank you so much for sharing, I found it is very helpful for me as a newcomer to learn the history of this beautiful country.
Thanks to Mr.Bradfield we have eight traffic lanes and two rail lines across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. That is foresight in 1932.
BC ferries is a government work program for losers, and they still can't treat you nicely, a bunch of glorified fast food workers
Was the takedown fotage from stevenson ships? they have been on a rampage recently taking down things
Their footage is in this reupload, so obviously not.
We asked you to remove our copyrighted footage. That’s it. No one else. That’s the “Rampage”.
@ why just me? I gave yo credit no one else did
@OceanChannelProductions Oooo skulking around looking for more!! Guess I have my answer...
I worked on building the east gate entrance and first aid station .there was a tunnel we also build under the east entrance

That new tunnel should be trolled until it’s paid off
Thank you so much for making this video!
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The first two ferries (Queen of Tsawwassen and the Queen of Sidney) were built in BC from designs based on the MV Coho. The Coho continues to operate today between Port Angles and Victoria using a ship that is virtually the same as it was back in 1959. Take a trip on the Coho and experience what those original two BC Ferries were like ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney-class_ferry
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, a 4 lane bridge being replaced by a 4 lane bridge because the NDP are bloody stupid
6:00 one assumes you are referring to the ex-BlackBall terminal at Departure Bay, not Nanaimo city centre. The drone footage shows the channel between the Yacht Club and Newcastle Island, but no ferry goes there; Departure Bay is far in the background. Until 1981 Canadian Pacific ran passenger, car and rail ferries that actually were to the Nanaimo city centre. It’s true the motivation for Duke Point was for capacity and to divert truck traffic away from the short but nonetheless residential stretch between Departure Bay and Highway 19.
Irving House in New Westminster is preserved as a heritage home and museum, a great place to visit for a look at Victorian BC.
You want a better BC Ferries? Get rid of the Coastal Ferry Act! British Columbians have no concept of what this Act has done to destroy the ferries and the potential to do more damage to private property rights in BC. Wake up!
You do realize if they got rid of the coastal ferry act, the only routes left would be Victoria-mainland and Nanaimo-mainland routes, right? All other routes BCF loses money on
@@robbiesmail7317 As soon as somebody writes "Wake up!" I've tuned out, it's like the call sign of wacko
This was before my time but so cool to learn about, especially since I still get to see the remnants today. Like Science World was from this expo? Amazing.
I definitely miss the older fleet (Queen of New West, etc), the current fleet doesn’t have as much personality and I feel like the layout isn’t as comfortable.
Sorry to disagree, being a 40 year user, I much prefer the newer!! But, that's just my feeling anyway.
I grew up going to White Rock. The Pier was a mainstay on our visits. Especially into my early 20s. I since moved inland and don't see the ocean regularly. I didn't realize how much i would miss it.
Toll all the bridges. Golden Ears, Port Mann, Patullo Alex Fraser, Deas Island Tunnel, 2nd narrows, Lions gate and toll the hwy to whistler for single commuter cars only. Work vans, trucks and Commercial vehicles exempt. Use the tolls to improve the bus system.
Local-built only benefits those union workers
Such a naive statement. Money spent locally supports local communties.
But cost taxpayers millions extra
Sorry you had to re upload this! My wife and I subscribed, it was a terrific video and we are excited to check out the rest!
Thank you for the support and glad you enjoyed it!
Further to the bridge idea, imagine the reactions of the rural homeowners on Galiano Island etc when told their idyllic retreat will soon have a four lane highway bridge operating next to it. British Columbia’s nimbyism is already pretty high, just wait till the owners of the expensive waterfront properties get riled up!
Let me get the smallest violin out for the rich boomers
The Fast Ferries were definitely a failure. But unlike the ferries since built abroad, at least those millions in wages went to workers in BC and moved through our economy.
As much as I support BC & Canadian jobs, Canadian shipbuilders cannot or will not stay on budget. In a cost of living crisis we need to save where we can
They failed because they were a copy of the large high speed catamarans invented in 1990 by Incat Tasmania. But the designers and builders didn't have the expertise and experience of Incat. There are only two companies in the world that still produce these ships, Incat and Austal. Now that all politicians associated with the fiasco have retired, it would be a good idea to simply buy similar ships, they are very fast, reliable and fairly cheap to operate.
A bridge makes sense in theory, but fails in practice when you consider the aptitude of the average British Columbian driver.
Especially Richmond drivers
Thanks for the video!! I love your content!!
Hey great video. But the fact that you were able to quickly reproduce the video without the offending clips means it's definitely NOT fair dealing. Fair dealing requires, as one its elements, that there be no alternative. For example, displaying a clip of a movie to critique it. The question asked by a court would be "could you produce your work without the use of copyright-protected material?" If the answer is no, then it may be fair dealing.
Thank you for this information. I was not aware and will definitely be much more cautious going forward. I actually used my own footage from my ferry trip in August as well as BC Ferries footage to replace the content. I should have done that from the get go... Live and learn.
The fixed link reports from the 80s always seemed crazy to me, because they went all in on the idea of going directly to the lower mainland from either Nanaimo, Duncan, or Victoria, but they didn’t seriously consider a much more modest route linking Powell River to the Sunshine Coast (which seemed to be the 19th century plan) or the Saanich peninsula to the US San Juan Islands. The two island hopping routes would have some of the same problems as a fixed link, but at a much smaller and more manageable scale.
We just don't have the population to warrant a deeply bored tunnel, and probably won't for 100 years. Bridges are too dangerous.
I hope the re-upload doesn't hurt your revenue. I'll rewatch just to make sure you get that adsense
I appreciate the support!
At that risk of copyright, do you recall what the clips were about that somebody got their undies all in a knot about?
