Mid Century Modern Dining Chairs
This is a set of 8 Mid Century Modern Dining Chairs, made with traditional joinery associated with Welsh Stick Chairs. Two chairs incorporate armrests, and the others without. These chairs, made in solid oak, were paired with a dining table I designed & made for the client earlier this year (2024). They are finished in clear satin hard wax oil.

Contemporary Walnut Barn Door || Modern Design
มุมมอง 771ปีที่แล้ว
This contemporary Sliding Barn Door in Walnut was part of a larger kitchen project involving a Dining Table, Breakfast Bar, Bar Stools & Glazed Interior Doors - all in solid walnut! Great project, but I thought the build of this sliding barn door was the most interesting build video... This was the only build that was not all solid stock, mainly to reduce the weight! Using real timber veneers o...
Four Poster Super King Bed - Carved Headboard || Unique Design
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
The concept for this piece came from the client's interior designer - a black, four-poster bed centralised on a large window...the client wanted texture & interest, so I designed a tapered post, with chamfered edges. The key to the design was the power carved texture of the headboard & footboard. The timber was Ash & the black paint was a milk paint with a hard wax oil top coat. The milk paint ...
The GANIVET Desk || Bedroom Vanity Desk
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
The GANIVET Desk is a concept design I worked on while away in Barcelona on a chef knife course. I tried to design legs for a desk that would represent the blade of a knife, but instead of the legs themselves, I used the negative space on the inside of the legs to capture the blade shape. I named the design "Ganivet" as that is Catalan for Knife... This piece is actually part of a bedroom suite...
The RHAW Stool || Staked Leg Stool
มุมมอง 652ปีที่แล้ว
The RHAW Stool is a new concept piece that I'm making available on my website for custom order - deerrivercraftsman.com/drcstore RHAW is the Welsh word for Spade, reflecting the shape of the seat. It is a staked leg stool, using through wedged mortise & tenon joinery. The stool is finished with either a clear hard wax oil to accentuate the raw timber or painted in traditional Milk Paint Please ...

The Poblenou Coffee Table The table top is made from Sweet Chestnut & tapers from the centre to both ends. The legs are Walnut, turned to a taper, with a round tenon, which fit into an angled through mortise in the top. The tenon was wedged with a piece of Sweet Chestnut, angled towards the table centre. The feature of this project is the inlay of alternating Walnut, Sapele & Spalted Beech. The...
Danish Cord Bench | Learning to Weave
มุมมอง 24Kปีที่แล้ว
This Danish Cord Bench was my first time weaving, and it was great learning a new skill, which was also quite a meditative process! This project is part of the Wood Whisper Guild, tutored by Caleb James, a renowned woodworker & chairmaker, specialising in Danish Cord. The bench is make of oak, although the long sides are maple as they are fully covered. The joinery is a stepped or haunched mort...
The Florentine Table | Unique Design | Side Table
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
I'm a big fan of knife & axe making, particularly culinary knives. So when two of my favourite knife makers announced they would be hosting a 2-day course to make a combination of their styles, I was all in! In July 2022 I travelled to Florentine Kitchen Knives, based in Barcelona, Spain for an amazing course with Tomer Botner & Geoff Feder (based in NY, USA). We made a stainless steel 8" chefs...
Live Edge Sideboard | Kitchen Storage | Custom Furniture
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
A Kitchen Sideboard or Credenza made with a Spalted Beech surround & mitred waterfall joinery. The orginal slab of spalted beech already had a waney edge on one side, but I carved a "live edge" the other way as I preferred the underside of the slab for the show side. I used the Arbortech Turbo Plane to carve the edge, before sanding smooth... The internal cabinetry & drawers are made from Balti...
Floating Bedside Tables | Custom Furniture | Inspired by Vintage Surfboard
มุมมอง 8392 ปีที่แล้ว
These small floating bedsides were designed for a nice bijou bedroom in a North Wales holiday apartment by the beach...so the design was based on the pattern of a vintage surfboard pattern with thin contrasting stripes of timber on a lighter main palette. You'll see the pattern change in the video change from three central stripes to to offset stripes, as the client preferred that make up. The ...
Storage Cabinet - Sweet Chestnut & Brass || Custom Furniture
มุมมอง 2.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A Storage Cabinet made from Sweet Chestnut, with brass detailing on the top - client commission for a holiday cottage on the beautiful island of Anglesey (Ynys Mon in Welsh). Spalted Beech Floor Lamp || Concept Design
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Concept design Floor Lamp, made from spalted beech off-cuts from prior client projects - this is a really good weekend project, with some nice simple joinery, but a rewarding piece - I'll be making this available as a made-to-order piece on my website, in a range of timbers. The wiring & bulb are from Industville, but there are lots of vintage bulb manufacturers out there with a massive variety...

Elm, Oak & Steel - The AUR DU Coffee Table - Black Gold

The AUR DU Coffee Table - Welsh for BLACK GOLD...this is a live edge Elm slab, which was destined for another project, drawer fronts for a record player cabinet...the client didn't like the look once on the cabinet, so I had to pivot with the slab in three pieces! How'd these hold up, have they sagged? Also have you done anything to weatherproof round the sides and between upper and lower doors given you've insulated the door itself?

Really beautiful set. I didn’t realize till the end you were using a laser level to help guide the angled drilling. Clever. Also, how do you line your laser pecker? I’ve been thinking of getting one for engraving my furniture

Yup the laser level for aligning drilling is a nice trick! LaserPecker 2 is perfect for woodworkers doing small engravings, particularly makers mark! Many thanks!

Thanks for sharing. I liked the rod as a mid-rail to prevent the front and back rail from warping towards the centre of the bench. The tension of the cords would prob do it at some point. Well done.

These seem more like Shaker style than MCM. Was it inspired by a certain craftsperson's chairs?

    • @DeerRiverCraftsman
      @DeerRiverCraftsman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Agreed, these were based on Welsh Stick Chairs I've made which are much more of the Shaker era, but designers like Ercol adapted them to a modern aesthetic in the mid century modern period...I used the Shaker style joinery of through wedged tenons on the legs & armrests...they were designed to be a contraction of both!

I'd love to see a follow-up to this video now two years on dealing with questions like what you may have done differently, and mods you have made or plan to make, and most importantly, projects that you have made on this bench that are easier now or would have been impossible earlier--you know, bench-in-action stuff.
