Home made modular woodsplitter.
Here is a quick video of first startup of home-made woodsplitter version 3.0. I'm just checking for wedge speed and power, along with differing speeds depending on valve configuration.
Comprised of Power unit and Splitter module. The two are connected by quick-disconnect hoses/fittings. Splitter was made first, dating back to about 2009 or 2010, originally built to attach to 3 point hitch and run off of tractor hydraulics.
Power unit was acquired in 2017 as a defunct golf green mower. The engine, hydraulic pump, tank, and some other accessories were reused. The rest was cut away and repurposed or scrapped. The pump has 4 stages, which provided individual hydraulic sources for: Drive wheels (used one of the smaller stages for rabbit speed), mower reels, and mower deck lifting mechanics. Originally used the mower valve bank. Internal leakage, performance, and need for customization caused me to replace it.
Replaced valve bank with 2 electric solenoid valves. One valve dedicated to the single high volume stage, the other valve dedicated to the combination of the other 3 smaller-flow stages. Output of the two valves combine to create high flow for maximum performance of splitter wedge. Each valve can be turned on or off to allow for different wedge speeds and power profiles.
Before the trolls attack, yes I know that not having a spring-return valve is dangerous. I don't let others (esp kids) use the splitter because of this. During production splitting, my hand rarely leaves the control lever. I had taken the springs out back when the wedge was traveling at 1/5th the speed shown here for productivity and efficiency (both hands to manipulate the target, or getting another piece while valve was retracting, etc).

Reluctant to pay top dollar for such simple skid shoes for my 9' Fisher (which would be too small to make it float on un-frozen gravel anyhow) I decided to build my own. Here is a first test, filmed in early December in Northern Wisconsin.
