76 Marshall 50 Watter rewired as a non MV 2 stages Plexi, similar values like the Plex (not the PPIMV obviously). Also added a 22µF over the 820 cathode of V2A. This time leads only through a Nobels OD pedal. 0:00 Intro 1:32 JMP 2:22 Plex

Friedman Plex vs Smallbox

Just some noodling switching forth and back between the two amps Plex is pure/rough, SB more bassy due to the fixed depth and other other things (loop etc) and cannot reach in ch1 the gain levels of the Plex.

More details: Dual MV pot reads ca. 250k. Wired as (dual) "variable R". NFB-R is 47k @ 16 Ohms. Volts reading in the table during vid for the „high“ setting. In the "low" setting, voltages in the preamp too drop by roughly 10%. B drops from 460V to 420V. Also the bias changes (that's why there are two bias pots) depending on running it in high or low Volts mode.

Just a simple track (rhythm guitars also with IR-D obviously ,you can hear them towards the end of the clip panned) from the average Joe who actually bought the device. Channel 1 set to lower-medium gain and channel 2 to more gain. Channel 1 via the 1x12 IR and with a "JTM-like" sound, channel 2 in the "tight" setting via the 4x12 IR (SM57/R121). EQ for both flattish. Guitar is a Nik Huber Krau...

Friedman IR-X - which IR sounds like my Smallbox?
I usually find the neo creamback to be too scooped or fizzy, but here it sounds pretty neat, but I think the 75 still wins out for me.
NIce tones Very little difference really, the Bogner has a hint of that warm woolly mammoth, while the Friedman has a bit sharper teeth, but they are clearly the respective designer's take on one tone and I wouldn't be able to tell them apart in a mix. I'd pick the Bogner because the Helios (and Helios Eclipse) has heavier tones in it that go far beyond Plexi.
Beide klingen super!
Über Standard Apple Kopfhörer ein paar mal im direkten Vergleich die verschiedenen Sounds angehört. Der CB 75 gefällt mir besser…
Why not both? ;-)
Every time I hear a creamback I am more convinced to swap one of the V30s in my 2x12 for one of those.. probably a 65 watts one..
Welcher der beiden Speaker gefällt Dir denn besser?
Bin noch unentschieden. Der CB ist ein toller Allrounder, der V30 halt heavy trademark - oder so.
Olaf may I ask what you are using for reverb/delay unit here?
Sure Robert: both from standard Logic Plugins. Typical 380ms delay and from „chroma reverb“ the amproom.
@@duese888 ah shoot, didnt realize was in the daw.
With this much gain you could play Willy Wonka Les Paul chocolate guitar and it would sound close to Gibson.
😁
Plex clear winner. If that's the sound you've been chasing you found it.
Nice tones! What cabinet/IR were used?
Thanks. An isolation cab with a V30 and two mics (SN57, SE ribbon).
Plex definitely has a little more "Bite" in the high-mids that I associate Marshall plexis having. But the difference is so small. I would still buy the Smallbox as you get a 2nd channel, and it also has the FX loop.
I dunno man that's pretty close, especially if the tubes aren't identical. If the Friedman master volume actually works well, that adds a lot of value. Otherwise I'd have to say the Marshall is too close to ignore the cost difference.
Sounds fantastic. Thanks again, I enjoy watching your videos.
Nice, thank u! Is that going thru the 4/12?
It is thru an isolation cab with a V30 and two mics (57 and a ribbon)
@@duese888 awesome, sounds great thru headphones and in my car (my isolation booth, ha!) great work Sir:
plex seems more open, cutting and clear
What riff were you playing at 1:21 ? Both amps sound great but the Plex has that Marshall growl.
What Riff were you playing at 2:38? It sounds super familiar but I can’t place it and want to learn it. Is it Satriani or Vai by chance?
Cliffs of Dover theme - for the poor😅 facebook.com/share/3fZJ2u4txBuDFkwn/?mibextid=WC7FNe
Why is your signal always panned?
Sorry, I don‘t get it ….
@@duese888 your guitarsound is panned to the left
have any tips for settings on a plexi style amp for a good lizzy sound?
Depends on your guitar and the album. For Live and Dangerous just a nicely overdriven 50 Plexi, for the later stuff an 800s plus in both cases a boost/overdrive for soloing, Also depends on the volume you need ( room, stage, …) I always just use the treble channel of a Plexi, no bright cap, vol pot to 6 and EQ to 5. Drive pedal a neutral overdrive like a Timmy (clone) or similar. If desired at low volume you may consider to have a post phase inverter master installed.
This is my kind of video. 🍿
Sound the same
Bogner seems to have more hair. could be an EQ thing
What?? It’s totally normal to have a room with $40,000 in gear isn’t it??? 😮
Great comparison. One sounded noticeably better than the other… I just have no idea which amp you were playing at the time.
Great vid and tones 👌 they sound a lot closer than I was expecting. You’ve saved me some cash! I have a 50w Helios and would be happy with a freidman too
They sound very similar. Really good! Shows the Plex isn’t worth the money since you can get a Marshall much cheaper.
Lizzy! Nice one.
Nice comparison.... The Friedman amps all seem to have that Mid forward sound....i can get used to it but when you switch back to the Bogner it sounds more rounded, to my ears more pleasing... appreciate the video
Sounds great!
Friedman, the “Boutique Amp” that is everything but Boutique… besides the price tag! No thank you, I will stick to real boutique amps
better harmonics on the '76
Plex vs origin 50?
Sorry, do not own one.
Very nice. Is this a mic'ed cab or a IR?
Mic‘ed old V30 in an isolation cab
Helios - Green, Plex - red for those not seeing the chapters
“…was replaced by an idiot.” Love it!
😁
Jailbreak and The Boys r back in town! A lot of Thin Lizzy vibe ❤
I like it 😊
Bogner has more clear articulation.
The Friedman is slightly warmer to my ear…is that because of the different caps???
Sorry, thought we were talking about the Smallbox. Difference/warmth due to the PI coupling caps.
Preferring the extra brightness of the Friedman in this case personally. What's the switch you're using?
www.thomann.de/de/tube_amp_manufactur_amp_switch_4_2_v2.htm?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADuDMCXyPtFUIoN9TmUcIxMBUqZol&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIn_PE1OaQhwMVqJGDBx1JCBTGEAQYASABEgJuXvD_BwE
They both sounded really similar. Why do the Marshall reissue suck so bad, can't they build them like the use to in the 60's and 70's?
no
I don’t agree. I got a 1959 SLP Reissue made in late 2014 and it sounds great. I’ve had lots of different Marshalls. Bought my first in the early 80’s.
Merci olaf! 🎉
De rien 😁
This made me appreciate my Helios a little more! Thanks for all the comparison videos with the PLEX. What’s your take on it at this point - does it have a place with all your other awesome M-style amps?
Thanks. Sure, will stay. Sounds nice, looks cool, nice PCB, keeps its value
Hmm… the tone stack on the SV20H is different from the Plex, is it not? The Plex being 470pF treble cap, 33k slope?
TS are identical, however the bright channels coupling cap SV20H is a 3n3 instead of a 2n2 you would expect, thus they used a 4n7 bright cap ….
@@duese888 very interesting. Thanks for confirming!
Thank you for showing the interior. This is the important information. I would never spend this much money on an amp without looking at the circuitry construction.
Sounds amazing.....
Brother! Really love your channel! You are a genius! An you have so beautiful scientist mind and pure love to the amps and tone! Really love your playing, it is so inspirational!
Thank you.
Both sound great but unfortunately the Friedman amps are a bit overpriced in Europe! I have these Marshalls in my collection (Jcm800 20w stealth, Silver Jubilee 20w special edition & Jvm 1w custom tattoo) I would like to add SV20 & DSL20.. i would love to add a Friedman to my collection but i do not want to spend that much of money on these small amps! Hopefully they make them more affordable!!
Which amp are you playing first - it would be great if you could make that clear
