    That Gunboat targeting trick is incredibly useful on this mission! Something to remember. That you'd get the Stealth Tank for capturing their tech center makes story sense, as that is where the stolen blueprint for it is.

      It really is! It's possible to complete the mission without tricking the Gunboat, but it's quite tedious and just takes even more time... With the airstrikes coming in, I'd rather get a move on!

    "Why is the computer so dumb?" I don't know about that, foiling two engineer rushes with a Harvester is fairly smart as C&C AI goes :D

    Under Siege is, I think, the first Covert Ops mission I beat. Despite clawing my way through the main game, I wasn't very good yet, and was proud to clear this one, but it just isn't that hard. As you pointed out, you get a surprise free APC, an easy back way into their base for an engineer rush, and indeed a nuke. I got Covert Ops for my 18th birthday, which was still last century. Half of Covert Ops I never beat, but watching this puts me in the mood to try again. I do have The First Decade on disc by now. What I don't currently have is a CD-ROM drive, but that can be fixed.

      You should definitely boot it up again. I used to be useless at the game, I don't even think I finished the campaign when I first had the game back in the 90s and definitely struggled through all of the Covert Ops missions! It was good to play again 20 years later and realised I could actually work out how to complete the missions (not always in the perfect way!).

    Thinking my comment on Blackout about Nod constantly rebuilding one air striked Construction Yard in the top left corner with the other one in the top right was actually meant for this mission. Breaking them early with engineers was a great move. You cleared in half an hour a mission that took me hours.

      Oh yeah! This mission is a real pain in the backside if you try to do it the proper way - I finally managed it after a 90 minute slog I think... it doesn't make for great viewing though xD

    I do like the way important Allied military experiments are always based on a small island; it shows an admirable degree of both caution (in case the experimental should fail spectacularly) and defensive sensibility.

It is definitely a painful one and you have to be quite methodical if you are playing on Hard. I don't remember even coming across any buggies in that mission? At what point do you have them?

      Oh sorry, yes I understand you now! Yes the Humvee's can take out the commando, but the rockets are very effective against the Humvee!

    Around 29 minutes in, you see why those Flamethrower Tanks (not to mention costly Engineers that never reached your base) kept being replaced in spite of that one Harvester you destroyed never being replaced: there was a second one running along the north end of the map through unexplored territory. If you'd known about and stopped that one, you'd have starved him much sooner. The moment that second Harvester entered his Refinery, you see he empty Silos pop to full again. The mission seems scripted for Nod to prioritize replacing lost Flamethrower Tanks and Recon Bikes over Harvesters.

      Yes I see the silos now, it's good to know as you can time capturing them if it's money you're after! In some ways, it's good to know the little flaws in the game and how the scripts are working, but I do feel like it take a little bit of the magic away from the game... Some of the nostalgia comes from the constant frustration.

    I was going to say, I never beat this on the original Covert Ops as a teen, but I must be confusing it with another GDI mission. My problem was with nukes, and there seems to be no Temple on this mission, just many Obelisks and a need to cut that power. Or is this just a matter of beating it quickly enough or they get to drop free nukes? That is just the kind of scripting expansion packs are fond of. The use of sandbags to keep the enemy out is a bit of an exploit as the AI can't target walls, but I can't blame you for doing it here against commandos. Way back when, I'd use them to keep the enemy away and slowly move them up, eventually walling up the enemy base with them. Interrupts their Tiberium flow too. But the result was I only learned later how to *actually* play. My main problem is that I somehow thought additional Refineries/Harvesters were too expensive to bother with, but on just one, you never get out of the stalemate against endless AI troops if their Harvesters keep coming in.

      This reminds me so much of when I got the original game on PlayStation back in the day. The only way my friends and I could win was by doing exactly what you said. Sandbag our way up to the enemy base and use guard towers to take down the obelisk long enough to get an APC into the base and take over that way. We never understood the point of the helicopter and the "proper" way to beat the mission! I'm pretty sure you're correct with regards to the nuke, Nod would always hit the advanced guard towers, assuming you'd built one.

    Blackout took me hours to clear. As I recall, GDI had two full bases (not just the temple northwest, that was an entire base also), both with a Construction Yard. I found out that targeting the top left of the map with an air strike let you destroy the Yard there outright, the A-10s come in on that corner and instantly napalm it before the SAMs can shoot back. I figured that caused a dent in their finances when they had to rebuild it with the other Yard, but that's because I did not understand AI finances then. Any Harvester that comes in does not give 700, but tops off all their Refineries and Silos instantly. You can only money starve them by stopping Harvesters from coming home. Works quickly then too, but only then. I used to need hours to clear the mission you just did in less than half an hour. Nice engineer rush!

      Thanks for you comment! I actually had no idea that's how the AI finance system worked... I knew it didn't work the way it's supposed to but I just assumed there harvesters just carried more or their building was heavily discounted. Topping off the refineries and silo is totally OP! Definitely makes sense as to why taking out the harvesters is the only method to cripple them! Great tip about the A-10s!! That would be a sweet sight to wipe the CY off the map quickly. I do love a good engineer rush; plus it feels like the easiest way to deal with some of the more defended nod bases!

      @@SavantApathy It *would* be OP for the AI to have essentially unlimited money *if* it was free to build whatever it wishes, as the player is. Instead it can mostly only rebuild buildings and units that have been lost, with potential exceptions scripted in for buildings or units that do not exist at mission start (e.g. that Chinook with engineers) or things that cannot be rebuilt (e.g. those two Obelisks alongside the path your MCV comes in along). The point is that most things destroyed *can* be replaced, and so long as their Harvesters are not stopped, they will be replaced indefinitely. That's why my trick to outright destroy one of the two Construction Yards ended up not doing me any good. But interrupt the Tiberium flow, fight off the counterattack triggered by destroying a Harvester, and you'll find they can replace it once, maybe twice, but then the money has already run out, troops are not replaced, and buildings get sold instead of repaired, a sure sign that you have them on their knees. Just don't allow a new Harvester to be built and finish a run with the money the sales bring in, or the cycle repeats. :)

    You do have to hand it to GDI, that air strike that finished off both your badly damaged Harvester *and* your Medium Tank was pretty good. And the end of that, as your Repair Facility was finished soon after. Admittedly at the end of the mission, I'd forgotten that that one Power Plant still belonged to GDI, and I am pretty sure destroying the ships was not required, but they did not seem interested in firing back at this point anyway.

      Yeah they really have a gift, it's always at the least opportune moment and always takes out something really damn useful! I'm glad it wasn't just me that forgot about the Power Plant!! I think you're right regarding the boats, no need to take them out. They seem to have some glitch where they lock on to something and if you take that unit out of range, they can't lock on to anything else - very helpful for me!

      I think, if they hadn't of positioned it at the end of a large field of ore and gems, it's likely it would go unnoticed for longer.. I don't even know what happens if you leave them to build up; are they troublesome?

    First, I'd forgotten how amusing it was when the spy actually made it into Tanya's prison; you could hear her taunting and gunshots as the prison building's health dropped and dropped . . . second, that wasn't a Tech Center you had Tanya blow in the center, but a Forward Command Post, the one type of Soviet building you never get the option to build.
