Simon Van Booy with Billy O'Callaghan hosted by Carmichael's Bookstore
Authors Simon Van Booy and Billy O'Callaghan discuss Simon's new book, NIGHT CAME WITH MANY STARS.
Available here: www.godine.com/book/night-came-with-many-stars/
In Kentucky, back in 1933, Carol’s daddy lost his 13-year-old daughter in a game of cards. Award-winning author Simon Van Booy’s spellbinding novel spans decades as he tells the story of Carol and the people in her life. Incidents intersect and lives unexpectedly change course in this masterfully interwoven story of chance and choice that leads home again to a night blessed with light.
“What you give in this world,” an old man tells his grandson, “will be given back to you.” Those words illuminate the actions within this unforgettable novel and its connected characters. A young man survives two nearly fatal accidents. A Black family saves an orphaned white boy. A pregnant teenager is rescued by the side of the road. A teenager with developmental disabilities is given his first job. Each incident grows in meaning and power over many decades as we see connections sometimes felt but not always apparent to the people themselves. “Everything was moving,” observes Samuel (Carol’s grandson) in the Kentucky woods. “An invisible force that was everywhere, and made everything touch.”
Told by a master storyteller, Night Came with Many Stars is a rare novel that reveals how wondrous, mysterious, and magically connected life can be-the light Simon Van Booy creates in this novel illuminates our own lives.

The author of the wry and hilarious CONFESSIONS OF A BOOKSELLER (published in the US by Godine in April 2020) has some exciting news!
Live from Scotland: CONFESSIONS OF A BOOKSELLER author Shaun Bythell

"Confessions of a Bookseller" author Shaun Bythell recently went live on Facebook from The Bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland. He gave a tour of the Georgian townhouse jammed with more than 100,000 books (Scotland’s largest used bookshop) and read a few excerpts for his new book, which Kirkus Reviews calls: “Irascibly droll and sometimes elegiac, this is an engaging account of bookstore life from th...

Your book was a gift from my friend from Edinburgh. As a librarian I want you to know that I’m not bothered in the least (well maybe a little sad- the truth hurts) by your feelings regarding librarians and library books. Please keep this a secret, but when I want a book, I go to a bookstore rather than to the library, for the most part. But please don’t tell my colleagues as they would likely be horrified and my reputation entirely ruined. Nonetheless, I so enjoyed your book (and video) and will read the next one! P.S. Thank you for letting us know that Captain put on weight. The same happened to me (I blame it entirely on COVID). And I can’t wait to thank Fiona for your book! Cheers to books and those of us who love them. I’m going to shoot my mother’s old book computer thingy in the back yard and then take it to he toxic recycling center! Thanks for the idea. Oh wait…. Did you receive the Patterson grant? You will likely make me read the next book to find out! And thanks for the permission to write in margins. I’ve done it for years!
Today I have find this in my library, exciting, after enjoying "The bookshop"-diary earlier🙃
a real scottish "booker"
Your suit looks like it was blasted at you from a cannon 😉 Loving the humour
Wow! I definitely need to go there!
I remember the Live at 5 (ish) videos. Brilliant initiative.
Miserable, wholly shabby - not chic effort except for the glasses and shoes. They are just ugly. Do you have clubfeet?
You are added to my Bucket list for when I come home again.
Love your Diary/Confessions books ! As a collector /occasional dealer and book enthusiast, you are providing a service and (clearly) a philosophy that should be held in increasing value and worth in these transitory times. I hope to visit your shop in the next year or so (mortality permitting).
Thanks for the tour. I'm reading (and enjoying) your second book so I can now picture the shop perfectly. I also happened to read the section you read from on a whole town being shut today. What a coincidence!
There's the pagan's beautiful walking sticks!! Right as one walks in the door!! 🙂🙏
We read you above book in our book club , we all loved it. Now I’m planning to do Scotland tour so hope will de-tour to your book shop. My friend always gets old historical books so now i know where to buy them. It’s so lovely to see the writer , if he’s still alive like you . I like your posh accent 🌷
Greetings from a German Bookseller! Love you books!
Read your diary and loved every minute of it ! Looking forward to the next one! Thank you for the video.
번역본 책을 읽고, 유튜브로 실제 서점을 보니까 정말 좋네요~😀👍
Found your first book on my shelf here in Italy, have no idea how I came to own it, began yesterday, can't put it down. Didn't need the visual but it has brought to life everything I already pictured.
Can't this guy tuck his shirt in, like a normal human being? Are there no barbers, or even combs, in Scotland? WTF already!
What is a normal human being? Show us your picture. We will judge you too
Supossedly makes him all windswept and interesting. Personally I'd tuck my shirt in.
The guy can dress however he wants to dress. Now f*ck the f*ck off!
@@TheBrakpan Booksellers are not suposed to look windswept and it's certainly not at all interesting.
😂 I happen to think Shaun looks adorable… 😊… I look forward to reading many more books from him! Nelle is the answer, but I’m probably way too late for the Scottish pound note, alas. 😛Peace and love to all from Pennsylvania USA 🇺🇸 God bless all in Scotland and the rest of the British Isles ( especially Ireland 🇮🇪 where some of my ancestors are from!)
Beautiful
Nelle Harper Lee - do I get the One Pound Note?? :).
Nelle :)
