Mutt loco build 1

This is a video of this build. I call this loco "The Mutt" as it is being created from no prototype plans but from my parts inventory. I thought I would take several more as the build progresses. The loco is running the main at track speed over the layout. Here is two shots following along. Please stay tuned for up dated videos of this build.

This is the golden spike moment. This train is the first train to run over the entire main line. The layout has really change over the last nine years but the main line has not. You can see that the sub road bed is 1/4" spline. The video was taken on a I phone in one hand and a Jim Beam in the other.

    • @mikesscale3149
      @mikesscale3149 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChargerusPrime I choose S scale when I left HO for a couple of reasons. The 64th scale made measuring parts easy with an everyday ruler. Then the size was just right for my space to offer a decent radius to run my steamers. Building in S is not any harder than any other scale if you make most of your own parts.

    Thanks so much for this video! This is your best yet!. Great build. Building in brass is not for the faint hearted. I hope we get to see it when it comes out of the paint shop. May I ask a few questions? 1. Do you have a continued supply of SSLS parts, or have you been using parts purchased a long time ago, though I see that you are also making many parts yourself. It is also great that River Raisin sells many parts. Did you use any of those? 2. What decoder are you using? Do you expect to perfect your DCC chuff timing? I've decided to continue to use a chuff cam on one of the drivers for perfect timing. That means that I won't be using any Tsunami 2 decoders. So when I use up my existing supply of Tsunami 1 decoders, I think I'll be going with TCS WOW, as they still have a chuff wire. I've not been able to get electronic chuff timing to work to my satisfaction. So I get the chuff timed as perfectly as possible for a crawl speed, and then I can't really count the chuffs per rev at higher speeds. But for the one (SSLS) heavy Pacific I built, I machined a slot in the frame for a chuff cam on one of the driver axles, and I prefer the results with the cam. 3. Do you have any more brass steamers on the construction schedule? Love to see more. I have the essential SSLS parts for my Consolidation project, but I am building my own frame, but I expect to use the SSLS drivers rods, tender tank, and tender trucks. I also recently got the original Overland quartered drivers and rods for their S scale SP GS-4, which will be my steamer project after the consolidation. 4. I haven't started a TH-cam channel, but if I send you footage of a completed loco, would you put it up? Thanks again for your great videos. You have a great stable.

Also, what make are your steamers? I presume they are brass. Did they come as shown in the videos, or did you modify them, or build them? They do look nice. Keep up the good work.
