Dedicated to paddling! K1 K2 K4 kayaks. Ocean ski. Surf ski. Spec ski. I was going to call my channel Paddle Porn but after a quick google I decided it wasn’t the direction I want to go…This is my channel dedicated to paddling, focusing on k1 kayaking, downwinders on my ocean ski and catching waves on my spec or surfski. Mostly my own videos but happy to share yours too, just dm me 🚣♀️🚣♀️🚣♀️ My first love is down river kayaking, but with limited geographical options I have recently focused more on sprint and marathon kayaks. For the last year or so I have been doing more and more in the ocean using an epic v10 and epic v12 as well as an old Hayden spec ski for when the swell is sized.
Maroochy River Paddle 2023
Any race that runs entirely with the current is a great race, but what makes the Maroochy River Paddle extra special is the range of craft that enters; this year 170 paddlers turned up on the morning racing in 104 boats. Although it features as a k1 race (being flat water) there were k2 kayaks, ocean skis (single and double,) spec skis, out riggers from singles up to oc6’s, sups, a dragon boat, and even a recreational ski all racing down the river in their individual classes and against each other for the overall bragging rights.
Last year I had a pretty average race, and with my current form and fitness leading up to this years race I wasn’t expecting much different.
I surprised myself at the start but getting in the front bunch which I stuck with for about 4.3kms. I then made a silly mistake where despite telling myself I wouldn’t take the lead I found myself doing just that when it felt like the group pace was dropping. There was a wave of ski paddlers that started 5 minutes before us and knowing that there were some really fast paddlers in that wave I didn’t want to simply stay in front of my wave but try to cut the time down on the paddlers in front.
My lead wasn’t very long but shortly after taking it one of the other paddlers made a push out wide on the right, I managed to join him and the rest of the group on the wash but I was pretty blown and had to stop to catch my breath. I recovered quicker than I expected and kept the front group in my sights for most of the remaining 17km course finishing 4th in my wave and out of the singles with just one k2 getting to the line ahead of all of us.
Overall I was happy with the result but disappointed that I didn’t stick with the front bunch the whole way, lesson learned for next time.
As usual, I paddled in my sharkskin shirt and pants with my Gara paddle and filmed using my Insta360 camera.

14 Beaches Race 2023
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
The Gold Coast of Australia never seems to disappoint whenever there is a downwind race on. The 14 Beaches hosted by Paddle Queensland (State Champs and the third out of four races in the Pacific Coast series) and also forming part of the @shawandpartnersfinancialse4420 Australian Ocean Racing series this year was no exception. Although I certainly didn’t have my best race, the fast runs and ...
Two fastest portages from the 2023 Paddle Queensland State Marathon Championships
มุมมอง 199ปีที่แล้ว
I knew on the day that these two paddlers were the fastest at portaging probably by a long shot but I didn’t realise how close they were! Very hard to time on distance so instead I started the timer as they finished their last stroke and started again on their first stroke, I don’t think it could’ve been any closer.

The 2023 Beach to Beach race from Moffat Beach to Mooloolaba Spit hosted by Mooloolaba Paddlers and sponsored by Nordic Kayaks. A fantastically organised event with an unbelievable turn out (from just over 100 entrants last year to over 220 this year) as this formed part of the Paddle Queensland Ocean Racing series as well as the Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing series. Southside Paddlers - June Downwinder

A quick video of the June monthly downwinder organised by Vance and Southside Paddlers. It’s a well coordinated morning with a great turn out each month. This one was also a week before the Beach to Beach race and nearly the exact same course starting 1km off of Moffat Beach and finishing up the river rather than the beach and about 2km shorter. This morning was pretty windless but there were s...

Mooloolaba Sundown Paddle
มุมมอง 344ปีที่แล้ว
A spectacular afternoon at Mooloolaba, fully sheltered from any wind and with virtually no swell around you could have paddled a K1. I paddled out and towards the end of my warm up I was pleasantly surprised to find a light but steady South Easterly wind once I rounded the headland at Point Cartwright. The breeze had created some small but direct runs which got me excited for a paddle back. Mon...

Experimenting a bit with the 360’ camera so I would love your feedback on what angles you like and want to see more of, and what you never want to see again. Regardless please like the video and subscribe to @purepaddling8534 to see more. My intentions were to find some waves and have a relaxed paddle as I’m still get over the effects of my bout of Covid but there weren’t any waves to be found...
Moreton Bay Ocean Paddle ‘23

Here’s my video from the Brisbane Paddlers Moreton Bay Ocean Race which is the first of four in the Paddle Queensland Ocean Race series for 2023. Unfortunately I contracted covid in the week leading up to the race which put a sudden halt to my training and prep, and left me lethargic and doubting myself on the day. There were a few parts of the race where I normally would’ve challenged other pa...

A video of my May ‘23 Time Trial with Sunshine Coast Paddlesports Club. Some of the other guys opted for the 7.5km option so there were just 4 of us on the start line. Tingalpa Trot 2023
มุมมอง 823ปีที่แล้ว
Hey, here is my highlights video of this years Tingalpa Trot hosted by the Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club in Brisbane, Queensland. This is my favourite flat water race on the calendar as it is run with the incoming tide and the further up the creek you go the narrower it gets, so you will have to duck under overhanging branches and around obstructions in the water. Once you are 5-6kms in it makes i...

Skilful paddling and fantastic footage. Especially enjoyed the boat wash riding and reactions of the paddlers as you passed them. Thanks for putting it toghether for all to enjoy.
Great video. Must have taken ages to cut together but worth it for the viewer. Lots of variation and exciting moments. Thanks
I've got an old Hayen that I learned on. Took me a long time before I was able to stay upright long enough to have any sort of workout, and even longer before I was confident in the surf (work in progress!), but soooo much fun catching waves on it now. Big heavy thing, which always seems heavier at the end of a paddle, but handles going out into the waves well. I just can't seem to work out how to avoid turning sideways on the bigger waves
Better video. Can't hear what you are saying.
Fantastic footage. Good racing too 👍

best video + sound!
Must be fun
Well done
loved the video - thankyou - were you using a 675 paddle?
Hi, I have been using the Gara Odin (med) which is a 740cm2 blade. It’s a 208-218 shaft which i usually have set at 212cm in my ski, although I’m thinking I could go shorter
Cool vid mate. I really enjoyed it!! That 360 camera certainly captures ALOT of angles. I'll have to try one sometime for sure 🤙🤙
Thanks, bit bulky but I love the camera…have to hold myself back from going too crazy with the angles 😂

Nice work Andrew Bavage and lovely portages Jase. Thanks so much for this video - I was sick and couldn’t go- so great to be able to see it🙏
I was also sick and couldn’t paddle so took some videos instead…hopefully I’ll get to race next time
@@purepaddling8534 well thank you - I am ver grateful- such beautiful conditions we missed! Our turn next year!
@@chrisgirdler9719 may not have to wait that long, there might be another marathons towards the end of this year
Cool video! What camera did you use? Insta 360? Is it clipped to your visor?
Yeah it’s the Insta360 X3. I’ve gust made a little hole in the peak of my cap and I screw it to that. It feels a little heavy and awkward the first time I mounted it like that but I got used to it pretty quick, I forget it’s there now
Impressed by how many NKs there are in the race - they seem to be fairly popular these days in Australia? And we are often impressed by how many fit older male paddlers there are - 54 in the 50-60 yr category? Wow! Why comparatively so few older women?
What’s more impressive is NK got 1st 2nd 3rd men’s and 1st females
sweet.........................................
That looks like fun! How long did the whole paddle take?
1 hour 19 mins, it was extremely slow punching out into the wind over the first few kms but reasonably quick once we turned at the buoy u til the last km or so when I had to cut back across. Definitely not my fastest down wind paddle, but still great fun.
I like when cadence and track's BPM match - that makes watching much more enjoyable and you have quite a few scenes like that here 😁
That’s really hard to get right, I used to time the change of clips with the changes in the music but it makes the video a fair bit longer or the clips a whole heap shorter. Appreciate the feedback though, very welcome to leave more 👍👍
You can only edit the footage you capture, I really wish people would film each other occasionally, and add some wide shots to give some perspective of the break. Years ago, I stayed in the lighthouse keepers house and got laid that night by my new girlfriend, because she was so impressed with my surfing, kinda made those hundreds of hours in the water seem more worthwhile.
Hahaha glad it brings back memories
Looks great mate 👍
Gotta love the sandbanks Matt😀
Came outta nowhere haha
Good stuff! Would you consider doing headcam videos in the future? It would be nice to see the paddling from your perspective. Would also love to see uncut versions of the videos if that's feasible👍️ Cheers
Hi Craig, yes I used to mount my GoPro on my cap but the Insta 360 might be a bit big, also wouldn’t get the 360’ views.
Great paddle , bad song. This is what butchering a song sounds like
What do you oaks wrap your paddles with like the grip ?
Good race man

You've gone to a very cramped place. I waited for the drone flight at the departure point for more than an hour, but no one came, so I came back. That's awesome!!!👍
Your video was awesome
Thanks for the upload
Looks fun
Thanks Matt ... What an awesome clinic!
It was very informative and quite helpful, Oscar definitely explains things differently but the result is effective
What a great day you had. I have a similar spot I surf my ski at in Baja. It's so fun to get way out on the shoulder and cruise wave after wave. At 70 years old I have surfed my whole life. Now I mostly switch off between a waveski and the surfski depending on conditions. I'm having as much fun as ever without having to compete for waves with those ultra serious young men who frequent certain spots. And with EVERY wave I ride I still feel the stoke of the glide. Life is good. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah I love it, can catch a wave in pretty much any conditions and like you said, you don’t have to compete with surfers, you can catch the same wave and just be 20 or so meters away from the break and not interfere with their ride at all.
I liked the part in second half where you were overtaking everyone one by one. 👍 Some of them paddled like me - with not too much rotation. I'm still slowly working on mine. 😅
Yeah I like that but I prefer it if I’m over taking because of a staggered start rather than because I fell in 🤣 I’m still working on my rotation too, and my stroke, my body weight positioning and so much more…always a work in progress
Thank you
You surf backwards better than I do forwards. Nice video.
Haha thanks, I wasn’t expecting to come out of that the right way up…I was more surprised than anyone watching this
I really enjoyed seeing that shadow from a wave at 4:00 growing larger. I thought it would eat you up!!, but it didn't!! You are a solid paddler!!
Best thing about videos is they can be edited to look good 🤣
So I’ve been thinking about adding some paddling related exercises that I like doing? How’d I do? Clearly I’m not a pt…
Fun stuff! Would be nice to have the camera mounted higher, as-is it's really difficult to make out much...
I agree, I’ve been working on a mount I just don’t trust my craftsmanship 😂 Might look at investing in something manufactured…
@@purepaddling8534 I can recommend the "Fat Gecko" suction cup mounts. A bit heavier than I'd like but rock solid and a reasonable price. Also very versatile in terms of positioning. Then use some carbon fiber tripod extension or aluminum gopro mount extension. I have a single suction cup, good for maybe 30cm, and a dual for a bit taller. A carbon/glass mount is better, no question, but the fat gecko are an easy way to get started... (Tip: always make sure the boats and suction cup are clean before you fasten them, else scratches can result)
Forgot to add: for me, the head mount is the best mount, except for ultra tall rear mounts... Your "To Hell and back" vid was great in that respect.
Looks like pretty tough conditions with the big stuff racing too fast to really ride, except for brief moments of crashing down the face... Nice footage! I hope you've had some more good days!
Still consider myself a learner driver, welcome all the tips
😈 p̴r̴o̴m̴o̴s̴m̴
Like it! Will be even better to have 1080p version
Unfortunately I never saved the original video. I had to copy this one from my old TH-cam account and lost quality.
It’s a first generation epic v12, they came with this decent sized cockpit cover which just velcroed on. I ended up losing it a few weeks after I made this video when I went out through some big surf. Didn’t realise what a difference it made until then.
what ski are you paddling ? or has it got some home made deflector sitting just in front of your feet ?
Nice one Matt. Most appropriate sound track too 😀
Your stroke looks decent Tom, very different boats though…mine will move through the water faster allowing for a faster stroke rate
Thank you. I still have a lot to learn. I use a high pressure inflatable because I don't have space to store a hard shell. Maybe in a few years... 😏
This is some nice and powerful paddling. Great stuff. I wish I was that strong. Hopefully will get there one day 🙃
Always a good paddle off of Noosa
Nice one Matt. Some good little runs in there even if you had to work for them. What a gorgeous day out!
