Pancake, angel, etc. These are words invented not for Poles but for English pilots. In the plane, e.g. "Hurricane", there was a 1,000-horsepower engine without a muffler. Radio at that time was not a mobile phone today. What was needed were simple, clear words that could be understood in difficult combat conditions. 🙂

In answer to all the propaganda spewing lefties and misinformed modern day Poles who believe that the UK charged Poland for the war equipment she was provided with by the UK between 1940 & 45 here is the verbatim transcript of the "Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland & the Polish Provisional Government of National Unity for the settlement of outstanding financial Questions" signed by BOTH parties in London on 24th June 1946. Article 1. The Government of the UK will make NO claim for repayment of the £73 million sterling, in respect of amounts spent of war materiel, equipment, supplies etc for the Polish Armed Forces in the West. Article 2. The Government of the UK will leave in abeyance at present the question of the repayment of military credits, amounting to a further £47½ million sterling, expended on the salaries and pay of the Polish Armed Forces in the west up to the 5th July 1945, but reserve their right to reopen discussions of this question. Article 3. In discharge of all claims made by the Government of the UK in respect of the Polish civil administration including welfare and educational services in the United Kingdom, and the maintenance of Polish refugees in various countries overseas, for which the Government of the UK advanced the sum of £32 million sterling, the Polish Provisional Government agree to pay and the Government of the UK agree to accept an immediate payment of £3 million sterling in gold and £10 million sterling to be repaid by equal instalments of £666,666 over a period of 15 years, the first payment to be made 5 years after the date of the entry of this agreement into force. Article 4. For the purposes of making the immediate payment referred to in Article 3, the Polish Provisional Government will transfer immediately to the government of the UK £3 million sterling from the gold deposited in the Bank of England for account of the Bank Polski, and the Government of the UK for their part undertake to place no obstacle in the way of the disposal or export of the balance of the gold held in the Bank of England for account of the said Bank Polski, this balance not thereafter to be subject to any conditions or liens. Article 5. (1) In addition to the Polish assets which they have already transferred to the Polish Provisional Government, the Government of the UK will, subject to the provisions of paragraph (2) of this article, arrange for the transfer to the Polish Provisional Government of all assets of the former Polish Government which were acquired before 1st June 1946, out of monies advanced by the Government of the UK. (2) The Polish Provisional Government agree that, for the purposes of assisting the maintenance of welfare and educational services for Polish citizens in the United Kingdom, the Government of the UK shall continue to use such properties, materials, furniture, equipment, books, cars, etc of the former Polish Government as are required for those services. The two Governments shall make the necessary arrangementsand shall, from time to time, agree how much of such properties, materials, furniture, equipment, books, cars, is no longer required for that purpose. Article 6. The Government of the UK will transfer to the Polish Provisional Government free of chrage surplus goods to the value of £6 million sterling, now at the disposal of the Govenrment of the UK, to be selected by the representatives of the Polish Provisional Government from lists to be made available to them by the Government og the UK. It is understood that the £6 million sterling is inclusive of transport, insurance and other charges which may be incurred in dispatching the goods to Poland, but in the event of the Polish Provisional Government themselves paying these charges the quantity and value of the goods to be made available under this clause shall be correspondingly increased. Article 7. The present agreement shall be ratified and the instruments of ratification shall be exchanged in London as soon as possible. The agreement shall come into force on the date of the exchange of ratifications. (19th June 1946) In witness thereof the undersigned, duly authorised thereto by their respective Governemnts, have signed the present agreement. Done in Duplicate in London on the 26th June 1946 in the English & Polish languages, both texts being equally authentic. Poles didn't have to pay for ANY of the £73 million worth of equipment (at 1946 prices) that they were provided with by the UK govt during WW2. 2. We Brits had paid the wages of the Polish service personnel serving in the west, NOT the Polish Govt in Exile. 3. We Brits GAVE the Polish Govt in exile in Britain £32 million (at 1946 prices) towards the welfare of Polish refugees in the UK and other British empire territories, in 1946 we asked for and received a £3 million pound repayment from the postwar Polish Government with a further £10 million to be paid back in installments over the following 15 years. 4. We Brits took the agreed £3 million from the Polish gold reserve which was at that time kept in the bank of England (and NOT "in Canada"), and FREELY allowed the unconditional transfer of the REST of the Polish gold BACK to Poland. 5. Apart from Polish Government owned property in the UK that was needed to administer the welfare and education needs of the Poles who had been given full UK citizenship courtesy of the UK's 1947 Polish Resettlement Act, the ownership rights of Polish assets in the UK were IMMEDIATELY & unconditionally transferred BACK to Poland, not forgetting that the property bought in the UK during the war by the Polish nationalist Govt-in-exile was paid for out of the £32 million the UK had GIVEN TO THE POLES as described in "article 3" above. 6. We Brits then GAVE the fledgling postwar Polish nation the choice of £6 million worth of equipment in Britain to be used as they saw fit. And today communist brainwashed Poles and lying lefties try to sell the nonsense that "Poland had to pay for everything", they actually paid VERY little monetarily to the UK and got the BARGAIN of a life time, having had OTHER nations rescue them from 1000 years of nazi tyranny at virtually no monetary cost to themselves!!!

It was the first Polish unit to take part in the Battle of Britain but they didn't write a diary. As I am a soldier of the Polish Air Force, I regret that I never talked to him when I could.
