The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath is a 185-mile bike trail from Washington DC to Cumberland, Maryland. Many riders say that the last ten miles is very bad shape. I took a morning ride in late October to see just how bad the trail is. #seniorworkout #railtrail #bicycle

Rated blue, the West Loop trail at Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve is a scenic ride through the forest along Spruce Creek. Very nice video. I’m looking forward to riding up there next spring.
Thanks for the nice comment. By spring, I expect the trail resurfacing will be completed to the Cumberland terminus. No more puddles! Have a great ride.
@ good to know! I look forward to it!
Nice video!! That drone footage is so stable.
Thanks Pat. I am very pleased with the performance of that little dji neo. I have used it on two more rides that I plan to publish soon. The drone did a great job following me at Herrington Manor this week. I'm on my way to Florida right now and I'm taking the Neo along to use at Santos.
@@an_over-the-hill_mountainbiker Awesome!!
Where did you park and access this trail?
From Ohiopyle take Sugarloaf Rd up the mountain to Grover Rd. Turn right down Grover Rd. There will be a little gravel road that turns right to the trailhead parking lot. It was marked with a small sign but I'm not sure the sign is still there. The Greenbrier trail starts off the gravel road just before the parking area. You should see it to your right just before you get to the parking lot. I made a map to the parking area; however, I can't put it here in my reply. I can only send it through messages or email. Have fun on the trails!
Thanks for sharing your ride!
Thanks for the nice comment. I hope the video was interesting and helpful.
@@an_over-the-hill_mountainbiker I did the trails today and had a wonderful day! Both 2 totally unique trails! Thanks again for the inspiration!
@@Keylmepie I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the trails at Clay Mine. Have you been on any of the other trails on Sugarloaf Mountain? There are many miles of fun trails there.
@@an_over-the-hill_mountainbiker Yes, I have done McCune, Baughman (minus the bottom portion) and Sugarloaf. I’m trying to find info on others including Betty Knox. Any other recommendations?
@@Keylmepie McCune is my favorite and when I have someone riding with me, I like to setup a shuttle to ride Baughman down to the GAP. I've yet to ride Betty Knox.
Sick!!!
Thanks for the comment. Cooper's Rock has some unique trails. I have a lot of fun there.
what is your favorite lock house on the trail? i like taking pictures and when i go, i will stop at every one of them, but just asking? thanks
Wow, that is a great question. Although I always enjoy looking at the lock houses and locks, I've never given that any discerning thought, so it is hard to choose just one. Some have been rebuilt and some have only the foundation remaining. There are some that I view with the influence of the surrounding scenery and others that draw my focus because of their disrepair. I am fond of the house at Potomac Forks (mile 164.8), named for the nearby confluence of the North and South Branches of the Potomac River. Of course, there I'm swayed by the adjacent structures and trees. I know that with a photographer's eye, you might find a particular angle for your photos that I have never taken time to view. I think your plan to document the lock houses with photos is a great idea and I hope you publish your work. I know that many trail users will be interested in seeing it.
Pretty area!!!
Yes, that's my favorite section of the towpath. A lot of people don't like the trail between the tunnel and Little Orleans but it really is pretty nice if you have a little bit of front suspension.
I love trail systems that are set up like this and not just a spiderweb of trails that are hard to navigate. Pocohantas State park in Virginia is setup like that.
Yes, Santos trails are nicely designed. I've never been to Pocahontas State Park. I'll have to check it out.
Looks like you found it
Yes, and I'm going back to Florida for some more in a couple months. Biking is a "Fountain of Youth". Just a little more than ten years ago my doctor told me that I'd better start exercising or I wouldn't be around much longer. I was in terrible shape. It's amazing what a little less beer and a lot more activity can do for a former couch potato. 😀
Good Stuff
Thanks for the comment!

where is the access point to 2:27 and which direction are you going.
You can get on the trail at the parking area in the town of Little Orleans, Maryland. You go east less than a mile to the ramp at 2:27.
To get to the trail at Little Orleans, you take the Orleans Road exit off of Interstate 68. I hope my reply is helpful. Let me know if you need more information.
Awesome video
Thank you, Carson, for the comment. I keep trying to improve on my videos and it's nice to hear good reviews!
@an_over-the-hill_mountainbiker keep up the good work!
Yesssss! I'm probably racing Nationals there next summer😊
Nice video! Very peaceful. My husband and I biked Old Town to Williamsport in June. it was over 90 degrees. Your trip looks more pleasant.
Thank you for the nice comment. I did have perfect weather for that ride. I grew up in in Cumberland and have been riding the towpath since I was a kid. My most enjoyable rides have been in September and October. However, if I have to ride in rain, I'd much rather ride June, July or August. Thanks again and many wonderful miles of riding to you!
Nice video! I just biked this a few weeks ago. It is a good ride!
Thanks for the comment. I haven't been on the WMRT since I did that video. I have been trying to get an old friend back into biking and I am planning on taking him on the WMRT this weekend. I think he will enjoy it.
I rode this all the time with my kids. We lived a quarter mile to the trail in Big Pool and would hop on at Ernstville Road. There’s an old graveyard just past Licking Creek that is neat to see. The trail runs along the interstate for about two miles before going back to the wooded scenery. Hancock is a great place to stop and enjoy great food at Buddy Lou’s just off the towpath. Once you head west from Hancock towards Little Orleans, you’ll see run down houses that the laborers for the orchards would stay while in season. There is also an old lime kiln just past that. There is good fishing at Little Pool. It’s such a peaceful and easy ride. You can take along lunch and bike the entire trail from Big Pool to Little Orleans and back in a day. It makes a wonderful day trip.
@@RS-ms1bz thanks for the interesting information. I'll have to check out some of that the next time I ride there.
If you’re doing the GAP/C&O, check your map for the location of this parallel trail. If you’re not a purist, its a nice 25(?) mile reprieve from the bone shaking C&O.
🚲👍👍👍👍Awesome cinematic presentation Footage .

Good to hear from you. Hope to see you on the trails. I watched your last mountain bike video and I was wondering how that crash happened. I know what it's like to suddenly hit the ground and then try to figure out what caused it. Anyway, keep on riding and have fun!

@@gregghershberger7968 Yep, I've done that as well and will probably do it again. It's just hard to stay totally focused on riding when there is so many things that can grab your attention while riding in the woods. Be safe.

Thanks for commenting. That trail is short but I found it enjoyable and figured I'd let people know about it.
Great video and narration. Just rode there had a great time
Thank you for the nice comment. Maybe the next time you are on Sugarloaf you might try "Wild Turkey" at the new Clay Mine Trails. I had a great time riding the trails there last week and just published a video of my ride on Wild Turkey. th-cam.com/video/h1OV1oXCzaw/w-d-xo.html
I actually did get to check that one out ! However it was at the end of a long ride and I was so tired to actually enjoy it lol. They did a great job building it
@@kridstax2248 yes, I liked Wild Turkey but might have it enjoyed it more if I wouldn't have slipped a pedal and ripped up my shin. I was planning on riding Woodcock but figured I'd better get the bleeding stopped instead. Eighteen stitches fixed me right up 😁.
Thanks, are Clay Mine Hills near the main town at Ohiopyle
From the town of Ohiopyle, you take Sugarloaf Road (SR2012) about 2 miles. Turn right on Grover Road (gravel). Go down the hill on Grover about 0.3 mile and turn right on a gravel road into the parking area. I can send a map to your email or Facebook Messenger if you would like.
Looks like a Great place to ride 🚲Thanks for taking us along with you . As always awesome job.👍
Thank you for the comment. The trails at the Clay Mine Trails already have a nice variety and several more miles are being built. I'm looking forward to riding them all. I joined the Ohiopyle Biking Club and intend to help build and maintain trails with them.
Nice video. I've been riding this trail since the early 90s when it's was far more technical. Now that I'm on the precipice of my 60s, I can appreciate what this trail has become. It's still a nice trail, and it's great for cardio. Keep it up young man. 👍🏾
Thanks for the comment and encouragement. I know exactly what you mean. Although I still ride a few technical trails, I'm finding joy in trails where I can get more cardio as well.

I rode the trail last week. The Allegheny trail up to Canaan Loop Road is in good shape. Had a few muddy spots on the Promised Land trail. That Canaan Valley mud is really hard to clean off the bike. sounds like it should be a great ride. have fun!
@@an_over-the-hill_mountainbiker excellent, thanks so much for getting back to me! I spent almost 2 hours getting mud out of places I haven't had mud before after riding the Davis Trail to Plantation, all the way out to Table Rocks...suffice it to say, I will likely avoid those two trails and try to stay on the more east facing sides of the Canaan Mountain and the Beaver Creek/Moon Rocks/Hellbender stuff!
