Ah - very nice! I had forgotten about this tune. I first heard it at a Fermilab barn dance and thought it might be out of Playford's Dancing Master -- but it's not. (And like others below - reminds me of Galopede.) Do you have any ideas on its history or what era it comes from?

It's a composed piece (by Arthur Wood in1924:'Maypole Dance' from his 'My Native Heath' suite. As others have said used for the long running Radio soap opera 'The Archers') and that's only part of the tune. I'm sorry to say it's not a hornpipe (English or otherwise) either, but a jig (6/8 time). Hornpipes are in 4/4, or (3/2 for the more interesting older ones). Best be sure of what you are doing before 'educating' others?

Great ! That's what I've just discoivered. The violin 1 part is actually quite easy to play. The viola part, in counterpoint and and counter melody, is actually quite difficult. So I started playing the Romanza violin 1 part on my viola., down an octave. Simples!
