BACKPACKING THE GRAND CANYON | rim to rim in 3 days + backpacking food reviews + a rattlesnake!
little docu/vlog about the time we backpacked from the north rim to the south rim of the grand canyon! one of the most beautiful and challenging trips, with temps at the rim in the 40s at night, and upwards of 105 in the base of the canyon during the day. #grandcanyon #nationalpark #backpacking

    hey great video!! some questions: what did you guys bring in your bags? how heavy were they? and what campsites did you stay at and how far in advance did you have to book? thank you 🙏🏼

    • @jan_hale
      @jan_hale หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sof5339 we brought mostly the basics! sleeping bag, pad, extra socks/undergarments, water filtration device, food for 3 days, small toiletries, and then i brought camera stuff. we didn’t weight our packs, but we definitely will next time!! there are only a few campground options in the canyon, we stayed at cottonwood and bright angel! we applied for the lottery to get a spot to book in the winter, and when we got in, we booked our sites a few months in advance! def would recommend as early as possible if you get the opportunity to book as it was 105° in the canyon at the end of may !!! ☺️

    the most basic sourdough focaccia recipe!! you need: 100g active starter 450g water (use warmer water for faster proofing) 14g salt 600g flour feed your starter when you wake up, and let it rise during your work day. when you get home, combine the ingredients (starter first, water, stir to loosen starter, then add salt and flour) and then mix by hand or in a stand mixer until flour is fully incorporated. do a series of stretch and folds for up to 2 hours, and then transfer dough to an oiled baking dish! leave it! set it on the counter and live your life (for a few hours). i like to let it proof until the dough rises enough to touch all sides of the dish and looks nice and bubbly, but the most realistic take is just to leave it until you’re about an hour from bedtime. preheat your oven to 425 and slap some olive oil on your dough. squish your fingers into the dough with glee to dimple (glee is a requirement here), and toss it into your preheated oven. brush your teeth and get ready for bed, then pull the focaccia out when the top is golden brown! leave it to cool overnight and enjoy it in the morning ✨

    disclaimer, this recipe makes 2 loaves. for a single loaf, just cut all the numbers in half. 200g active starter, sloshed together with between 700-850g water (less water will be an easier dough to manage) add in 1,000g flour (i usually do a mix of bread, all purpose, and i’ve recently been liking the flavor of adding a tiny bit of corn meal!) and 20g of salt. then, because i’m lazy i mix it in my stand mixer! let it rest for a half hour and do a series of stretch and folds every half hour for as long as you’re able to, but up to 2 hours! (so 4 stretch and folds) then let her rest until she’s risen about 50-75% in volume. i usually eyeball it and hope for the best! then turn her out onto some flour and we pre-shape, leave sitting for 30 min, and then shape and pop in a basket or bowl! cover with something plastic that’ll help keep the moisture in, and pop them in the fridge overnight! preheat your oven to 500 the next morning, and toss your dutch oven in to heat up! okay, after about an hour preheating, pull your loaf out of the fridge, turn out onto a piece of parchment, and score it-an x is a really easy option! then pull your dutch oven out, plop the bread in, sometimes i like to add a little water for extra steam, and throw it in the oven for 25 min! after 25 min, take the lid off, and admire your creation. then let it bake another 25, or until it’s reached the level of brownness you prefer. and that’s it! sourdough for people who are scared of perfect sourdough. *recipe adapted from Pro Home Cooks + Alexandra’s Kitchen.

    Bears are fast and elusive and dangerous when there are cubs. I know you were told about the bears by the ranger. If you aren't prepared, then it could be fatal. You shouldn't have been surprised.
