I respectfully disagree with her suggestions. Sit down with them on day 1 and ask them to write down their school schedule and sign off on it. Have them reveal any days off expectations throughout the first 12 months and sign off on it. Ask them if they are flexible to cover a shift that becomes available 2-3 days prior to the shift. Put everything in writing and set your expectations of how you prefer to receive communication from them.
