Understanding Why Final Fantasy VI Worked
In this video, I analyze the story of Final Fantasy VI, and explain why I think the game is still relevant today. Some classic games are the victim of nostalgia goggles, and revisiting them later in life can be a rough experience. However, I found that Final Fantasy VI was not only one that held up, but was actually better than I remembered.
All of my Final Fantasy VI footage was recorded off of the SNES Mini.

The Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remakes are the Inferior Versions (and That's Okay!)
มุมมอง 3.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
I love Resident Evil. Far and away it's my favorite franchise. So I found the remakes of these games simultaneously exceeded my expectations as well as fell dramatically short of them. I made this video to suss out my mixed feelings, and hopefully it will speak to others that feel the same way. Please let me know what you think! Special Thanks: Eurothug4000 for always taking a look at my stuff,...
Service Jobs in Video Games

This video is about several Visual Novel style games I've played, and what I noticed about how they conveyed their stories through service jobs. They each attempt to do their worldbuilding through interactions with unique characters. Never painting a full picture of what's going on in the world, they show the perspective of how those worlds might appear through the eyes of ordinary workers - wh...

I stayed away from all of the discussions online, and only saw them after I completed the game. I knew that people were generally upset, but I had no idea the extent to which that was true. It's my hope that this interpretation can help some peop...
How Classic Resident Evil Came Back From the Dead

Thank you for checking out my video essay on the Resident Evil series. This is an analysis of the whole series and how the classic game mechanics have been translated to the newest games. Persona 5 - Keeping JRPGs Alive - Spoiler-Free Review

I love the heck out of this game. It's not a game for everyone, but anyone that has liked JRPG games ought to give this one some serious consideration. Out of respect for players that are actually looking up reviews to determine whether this game is right for them, I have made sure to omit of blur...
Nioh Review - Is it a Dark Souls Clone or More?
มุมมอง 3637 ปีที่แล้ว
Nioh was sold to me as a Dark Souls-like game set in feudal Japan. I didn't play the Beta, so when I picked up this game, I didn't fully know what to expect. I found that it actually borrowed elements from the popular From Software games, but had enough to differentiate it from those games to be sometime all its own. Some changes are good, some aren't so good. Overall, it's an enjoyable game wi...
Night in the Woods Review - A Storybook for Grown-Ups
มุมมอง 11K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my review of the indie title Night in the Woods, available on PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux. This is a story-based game with a cute aesthetic reminiscent of Wed Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. If you are into games that are more focused on story and experie...
Resident Evil 7 Review - Is It a Resident Evil Game?
มุมมอง 2977 ปีที่แล้ว
As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, the new style of the game really worried me. Watchdogs 2 Review - Who is this game for?
มุมมอง 3858 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my review of the sequel to the universally "Meh"ed Watchdogs. Generally speaking, if you're okay with how open games work, you'll probably be on board about halfway, and then whether or not you like the characters will get you the rest of the way. The game has a pretty decent puzzle-solving platforming style with the drones you control, but doesn't fully commit to that. I suspect that a...

Just did a playthrough of FF6 recently (was on a huge FF tip recently and played through 6-10 back to back lol) and it's probably one of my favorite games ever. Loved all the characters, Strago and his granddaughter included xD. Gonna play through some of the even older FF's probably soon, but now I'm in Legend of Heroes mode, going through the whole series. Anyways, I definitely think this game holds up very well as well. I've played through the game twice and both times Cid died, so I didn't even realize you could actually save him. Gonna have to save Granpa Cid next time.

Strago had his own sort of terror behind the scenes. He lost his daughter, soon after her husband abandoned her with a baby daughter. So he put everything into his granddaughter, and she became his only hope in the world. And then the world ended and she died. He blamed kefka and tried to go to the Tower of the Magi, a gigantic tower dedicated to Kefka, to try and get the power needed to defeat him all by himself. and he failed, and was taken in by the cultists, only to be rescued from Kefka's nihilism by the voice of his granddaughter, in an instant the veil of kefka's message was lifted away, and he had hope again. "I have a great granddaughter" might be a fairly mundane thing to say, but when you think about who Relm is, and what Relm has been through to get where she is, and how important she is to Strago, not just as a granddaughter but as a bringer of life and renewer of spirit. I blame the translation, they should have given each vocal character a few lines there. Something like "I once worshipped you Kefka, I thought your nihilism was the only path forward because you had already tipped over the world and killed everything I hold dear. But then I heard her voice Kefka, and I knew, there was hope. I have a great granddaughter, and we're here to finish you."

in my Headcannon the moogle you get in the World of Ruin is not the same moogle that you encounter in the very beginning of the game. When I get Mog, I always name him Molulu, which I view as Mog's girlfriend. I just don't like the random "RAMUH MADE ME TALK" that just becomes nothing. It's a much better plot if Mog is actually dead, and Molulu keeps his dancing alive. I have names for all of the characters and a whole other slew of "homebrew" rules for how equipment and espers are equipped, so they all grow into interesting diverse characters based on their espers and equipment.

I guess I am the only person who can tell Final Fantasy VI was rushed in development. At least in the end I don't think "searching for friends" in the World of Ruin was intentional; I think developers wanted players to collect their entire crew again and flesh out more of the characters before the end credits but didn't have time. I don't think the "open world" aspect of the WoR was intentional. Still a great game, but sadly it could have been even more.... and we could have seen more backstory of Strago and Relm.

Eeyup. A masterpiece, and like you, it was my first FF, waaaay back in the day, on the SNES. I extol the same virtues you've listed here, regularly. I always thought Strago's story was about ageism. Everyone think's he's old and useless; just some crazy old man. Then she shows them what he's still capable of. Before the team shows up, his only purpose in life was to care for Realm.

Something I'd like to add about this game's theming and their characters: most of the cast lose their reasons for going and find new purpose. 1. Terra loses her, well, self, her identity. Simply finds a new ones as the "mama" of orphans and is able to keep going. 2. Locke loses his love and once he accepts she is gone, is able love anew. 3. Edgar loses his kingdom and sense of duty, only until he sees Celes and mimics her will that he actually fufills his duties as king and leads his people anew. 4. Sabin never really loses his sense of going forward, but he does gain the respect of his brother. 5. Shadow loses his humanity, and being surrounded by those who are determined to move on, well, depends on the interpretation of the end. Is he faking his death to live anew or giving in? 6. Setzer lives a selfish life until he learns from Celes he can live for others instead. 7. Mog learns he has friends despite losing his world and his people. 8 - 11. Cyan, Celes, Gau, and Strago, you've already touched on. 12. Relm learns that there's more to life than just one's work.

I felt the same when I played this long ago in the mid-90s as a teen struggling to find myself. Since I played it, there has never been a better narrative in any game, book, or movie than Final Fantasy 6. The only story/movie that I felt comes close to the same level of FF6 is Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. LotR had some very profound quotes littered throughout the movie, like the wishing speech Gandalf gives to Frodo in the mines, or when Sam tells Frodo he understands why they have to keep going, despite all the darkness and looming fear of not succeeding (because there's still hope in the world, and it's worth fighting for). Everything you touched on about FF6 is what I love about that game, with 1 piece you forgot to mention: the music. Likely, the best collection of themes in any video game ever made. Probably the saddest moment I felt in the game were 3 scenes: when Cyan has to say goodbye to his wife and child on the train, when Gau confronts his dad who completely rejects him as his son, and when Celes leaps off the cliff after Cid's death. Those were tear-jerkers.

Fantastic. For some reason it took the algorithm years to bring this video this lifelong FF fan. FFIV had always been neck and neck with VI for me, but my love for IV is purely for the nostalgia - the first JRPG I played with a real story. VI always had a far more complex story, and you hit themes I hadn't even thought about. I've loved introducing these to my kids especially through the remasters, and the replays have cemented VI as my favorite. Still, I'd love you to do a breakdown of IV. It sometimes gets overlooked, but it has has some real moments of its own too. Oh, and definitely subscribed.

I thought ff4 was a hot mess of a story. Too dark mostly and over the top heroics, but still delightfully satisfying. The fact, that unlike other games, there is no main protagonist and every character, has his/her own backstory, personal pain and a reason to fight, is why, we love the game and have a deep connection with the game, the party member, fight not for hatred, greed or revenge, but for love, friendship and hope, this is perfect way to portrait the power of friendship, love and hope, without being to corny and obvious, this makes this game a timeless master piece.

But when he goes betrays the emperor because he went mental over seeing his own blood... jaw drop moment. I just started the pixel remaster om the switch a week ago. The game holds up.

Locke is the main character because of 4 reasons: 1. He is necessary for all the other characters to be able to reach their journey's purpose. He is literally the archetype of The Magician because he actually functions as a psychopomp that guides a person to self-discovery that illuminates what their character was missing for the journey they were on. 2. He has the most transpositional analogy references aka symbolism/representation 3. He lines regarding "Semantics" fulfills a player non-interaction principle where he literally does what he wants without contradiction to his values [since Nihilism has 4 degrees of Initial Aggressor, Prosecutor, Lawyer, Final Judge....& Locke is the Prosecutor of lost treasure that had been judged to not be of enough value to keep on ones actual property, so he isn't actually a thief since he isn't trespassing any lawful territory, including the players] 4. The transposition of needing "Resurrection" is part of developing the player....& Locke STILL has that scene without interruptions FROM THE PLAYER, whereas the player interrupts all the other characters.

as someone who only got to play ff6 almost 2 decades after it's initial release, i can assure you it's not nostalgia. I'm not a turn based jrpg type of guy, and this game is for me one of the best games i've ever played and one of those games of my selected list of "if you think gaming isn't art, play this". While ppl were crying with tlou1 gorgeous storytelling and cutscenes, i was tearing in the opera scene, getting inspired with terra's discovery of true love, and melting my heart in tears with the moment everyone declared to kefka their reasons for joy in such a ruined world. I've already played ff10, 13, 7 and 8 at that point, but that sprite based game was something even more impressive and special and even though 7 is a goddamn great game, 6 is my favorite for how it felt i was playing through a big play with a fantastic and epic story. The only jrpg i can tell i felt the same thing was chrono trigger, and if ff6 is comparable to the best rpg of all time... you know is a masterpiece right there

Personally, I think Strago was supposed to be fleshed out a little more. Realm's mother died, maybe during child birth, and her father went to get smokes and never came back. Strago was left looking after a little girl by himself in his old age. He may have blamed her for her mother's death or he was trying to shelter her from the world and never let her express who she really was. Throughout the course of the game he realizes how blessed he is to have her and that his own daughter, Realm's mother, lives on through her. That gives his "I have my special little granddaughter" a little more weight. He's finally accepted his own daughter's death and is looking forward to watching Realm grow up.

I too was perplexed by the narrator's need to have everything spelled for him, least Strago raising his grand daughter be reduced to a sarcastically repeated phrase.
