Forward Progress: Self Publishing Vlog Forty-Six | Write Shift
I took a few weeks off to focus on my health but I'm finally moving forward again so I wanted to give everyone an update on whatever came into my rambling mind this morning.

For the last three years, I've been working on what has come to be known as "The Lightblessed Saga." The first book, "Night of the Illumination," is in the final preparatory stages for being published, and as a first time self-publishing author I wanted to document the steps I've gone through and the steps I'm going through to get this book published. Plenty of videos exist to describe each step, but everyone's journey is different. This is my own.

    ask Cormac McCarthy, in spirit I guess now, but he'd tell you writing maybe is supernatural. I just started watching your channel, is this at the point you wanted to be trad published? I noticed the latest videos mention self published in the titles. As I said, I just started taking a gander so you may have addressed this. I am completely for self publishing, not into the whole gatekeeping thing, seems archaic at this point. Anyway, gonna check out some more of your vids.

    • @writeshift
      @writeshift หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh my, I had to rewatch this because it had been so long since I filmed it! No, despite my wife's urging to be trad published I had long ago abandoned the idea of it because of your aforementioned gatekeeping. Just like my Navy career didn't advance because I didn't "play the game," I don't want to play the trad publishing game. As self-publishing grew during my time in the military it became clear that's where I wanted to go. Thanks for following!

    Honestly the ai has been a huge help overcoming blocks. I had a naming convention for my 4 main characters. The first 3 I had down and followed the naming convention. For the 4th character I wanted to use the same idea but using Middle East names. I don’t really know much about Middle East names. But it generated some ideas on middle eastern historical figures which match my naming convention. I read about their histories and one of them was perfect for my story. So the last name for this character was Khaldun. Based off of Ibn Khaldun.

    • @writeshift
      @writeshift หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can definitely help with stumbling blocks like these. I'd still caution with this that if you're unfamiliar with those sorts of naming conventions that you research what the AI feeds back to you. You probably don't want to use names that are offensive or have poor/negative stigma attached to them (i.e. a Middle Eastern equivalent to someone like Hitler, for instance) unless it's meant to evoke a villainous nature. You may like how it sounds or that it meets your naming convention but there may be more tied to it than you're aware of if AI is just spitting out names.

    I Just started writing. Actually I’m making a cartoon series. I’m using ai to help brainstorm my story. It’s been awesome! I basically tell the ai my ideas as they come. The ai will attempt to summarize my ideas. But it gets it wrong. So I refine it and tell it more details about what I am thinking until it says back to me exactly what my vision is. It’s really happy about it. When the AI gets my vision wrong, it helps me articulate what my vision is.

    • @writeshift
      @writeshift หลายเดือนก่อน

      I enjoyed using it for the LitRPG concepts I was setting aside for future use. I had it create some frameworks for several dream worlds and I can't wait to get around to writing those stories when time permits. AI is quite useful for exactly what you said, helping articulate your vision. However, it's up to YOU to actually craft your vision.

    • @writeshift
      @writeshift 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I absolutely prefer having a hand crafted design. I can't get the unity of design between books that I want just by using AI. That said, it's very handy to create mockups and reference to provide to my artists. :) There was also a lot of written back and forth of scene/character description that I didn't get into much with this video, so that was also involved. Mock ups just saved time. Picture worth a thousand words. :)

      Yes this was actually a combined Developmental, Line, and Copy edit with majority emphasis on the developmental aspects of it. It really helped to get an outside perspective of how others read/interpret the story and find the areas that need a little more attention/polish.

    Not really passive voice. Passive voice is when the verb acts upon the subject. There are a couple of examples here: "they were protected..." and "He... could be trusted..." But some aren't: "She'd been watching Commander Diwella..." That's active. "She" is the subject, who is "watching," targeting the object "Command Diwella." The problem with seeing this as passive voice is you tried to fix it like it was passive voice by making Commander Diwella the subject. In doing so, you've changed the meaning. We went from an emphasis on "she" being observant and taking the opportunity to learn, to Comander Diwella taking whoever "she" is under his wing, and that might not be accurate at all. Don't get me wrong, the words you are targeting are weak. But that doesn't mean it's passive voice any more than adverbs mean passive voice.

    Yes, but make sure that these details translate to gameplay. A lot of world building is for the DM - because it's a joy to create and help with gauging consequence/outcome. Some players are naturally curious, but a lot of them will only care about or pay attention to world building that affects them. You need to build those details, but they won't matter unless you find a way to work them into a playable format or give them consequence.

    This trope is also the easiest and most common way to write bad characters and stories where situations and other characters only serve to validate. justify, and glorify the "hero". This is how a Mary Sue and a Gary Stu are born.

      Yep, completely true. I prefer it to be a more subtle approach when writing around a "chosen one." Watching The Phantom Menace makes me cringe whenever they ramble about Anakin being the prophesied one to bring balance to the Force. Surely there were better ways to do that but it came across as very ham-fisted.

    “Well, Kev, what can I say? Sounds wacky to me,” Silas said, considering his options. “When did this start?” Kev counted on his fingers quickly, his eyes half-lidded.”By my estimation at least three years. I think. Everything blurs together, you know.” “Yep, it certainly does.” He reached over and grabbed Kev’s shoulder. “There’s something you need to know.” Kev looked at him, startled. “You believe me, Silas? I thought I was going insane.” Kev looked almost like he was about to cry. “I do. Can I make some guesses though, just to be sure?” Silas looked at his friend. Much like his own face, Kev looked worn and aged, with a deep weariness. He had grown a foot-long beard seemingly overnight. Light streaks of gray peppered his wiry brown whiskers. Kev stroked the beard. “Not sure what you’d ask, but yeah, I suppose.” Silas stared him down. “It restarts at midnight. It only happens to you. Death is no cure. Ring any bells?” He hadn’t even needed to ask the question, as he watched Kev’s eyes widen with recognition. “How do you know all that?” he asked incredulously. “There’s answers, and there’s answers,” Silas answered cryptically? “So it’s a bad news-good news thing?” “You could say that.” “Will you help me?” Kev pleaded with his friend. “I can’t break the loop for you, and I won’t remember this conversation tomorrow, so don’t ask again,” Silas offered. “Not helpful,” Kev said, downtrodden. “It’s not all bad news. You can break the cycle yourself, but you have to figure out how. It’s…a trick of sorts.” “Please, I’ll give you everything I have in my wallet right now to make this stop. Please!” “It doesn’t work like that, Kev,” Silas continued. “You have to pass the gift to someone else.” “Gift? What gift? This thing is a curse! For every day to be the same exact date, over and over. It’s driving me crazy!” Kev gripped his hand tightly, and Silas yanked free. “I can only tell you that once, and I need to make sure you know that. Because tomorrow, my gift will be gone.” “Wait, you have the gift too?” Silas smiled sadly at Kev’s confusion. “Had the gift, my friend. It took me…a long time” Decades, Silas reminded himself, not wanting to dwell on his friend’s fate. “It has been given to another.” “Who did you give it to?” “When you find out how to give the gift, you’ll know.” “That’s all you’ve got to say?” Kev frantically reached out as Silas began to walk away. “See you tomorrow, Kev.”
