Why You Should Hunt Mature Whitetail Bucks Less
I’m often asked, why are mature Bucks so hard to Hunt? I often answer that with it’s because we make it harder then it has to be. With that being said, it does take a lot of patience and requires us to Hunt Less. But is that a Bad Thing?
Hunt Mature Whitetail Bucks less times per year with higher success rates and here’s why!

    Congrats on a nice deer! I'm seeing it where I hunt but I've only hunted 5 times afternoon only since mid August. I'm also not getting any shooters on camera yet, usually it's by the 12 or 14th of October. I'm starting to think I'm not going to have any. I haven't seen any that I had coming last year. Enjoyed the video.

      Good attempt in your area to keep pressure low, but hopefully with new ot looks from the channels you'll ne able to create a stand assembly that allows for early hunting attempts. Id never own or invest time into a parcel I could hunt until Halloween, so much good hunting lost ahead of that. Good ol Michigan, hang in there. Best of Luck.

  • @Beasel

    I don't think it is simply pressure.... I think is does relate to a BIG change in preferred food sources = acorns. The preferred food sources goes from out in open (ag fields + food plots) to timber. Often acorns falling right in your target bucks bedroom. I have hunted on large controlled pressure properties and the LULL still happens. Can't be pressure when you are talking 1 bow hunter per 500 acres of primo hunting land. A plethora of cameras also tell me it is not simply pressure.... because no one is even on the property and cell cams slow to a crawl in mid October. My 2 cents.... with 25y of hunting experience and 1000s of inches of antler on the wall.

    • @StayWhitetailDriven
      @StayWhitetailDriven 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your opinion. I think what your experiencing as many do is still the pressure spectrum. This is caused in most areas due to neighbors in your bucks area still applying pressure. I should have added this into the video as I've spoke on it before but in most areas you can do everything right and your still going to experience this Lull if folks in your areas are hunting with high pressure techniques. Also, I find most folks are still hunting plots, but think a 1 hunt per month or 2 times per week isn't classified as to much pressure, but it surly is. My clients will a test. most that follow the plan don't experience the Lull as much but still feel it due to neighborhood pressure. Thanks for the comment and following. I appreciate it.

    • @davidvankainen6711
      @davidvankainen6711 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, more than just pressure internally. Big Ag nearby cuts corn around the opener (shock to the deer). Goose Hunting nearby the big acreages (shock to the deer). This year, other neighbors must have got new toys (AR) more shooting fun to pressure a wee bit more. Oh yeah, kids hunt, early doe rifle, handicap hunt. . . October 15th in Northern Michigan and natural weeds and forbs outside of the food plot are still palatable. The first natural sign-post scrape is opened up. There is a natural shift taking place in the woods as well. I've done my best this year to minimize early hunts and not to blow into the food plots and cover locations. Can't wait to see if any mature bucks have been "lulled" into my neck of the woods!

    I have a target buck I have been hunting for three seasons. I have a picture of him mid February and early July in velvet. That’s it this calendar year. Camera History shows he doesn’t show up on the 110 acre parcel until October 18. I have had great weather since season started October 1. I haven’t hunted yet. Am I doing the right thing? Thanks, I appreciate the support. Shot ots need to be just that, your able to shoot across them. Most are .20/ acre. 40x4pyrds ish or less. Large enough to hold the food and not be dirt, but small enough to get away from and not hold deer. Screen them off from Plots and your good to go.

      No sir never to late, just need to get the SXS or Atv as close to it as possible if not under it and leave it running while hanging the set. As long as you leave the motor running they will not go far if they move at all. Not the case if you walk in and bumped them.

    Years ago I found a young buck dead in a ditch on my way to a deer stand one afternoon, way too far away from a road for it to have been hit by a vehicle, anyhow a few days later i shot a turkey that had this avian pox all over its head, MDC was aware of it that year and was asking for people to report it if they happen to kill one with it - I called the local agent to let them know the when and where about this turkey, he asked if I had found any dead deer as well? I told him about that young buck, he said there had been an outbreak of EHD in my area and that in the fall Deer only really die from two causes, Human or EHD. I had always been under the impression you only found them near water, he claimed you can find them dead anywhere from EHD, also his claim was that there are EHD Deaths every year, it's just the severity of it increases during hot & dry years?

    Thanks for the info Josh. In NY EHD has been around for a few years and when it hits an area it is devastating. I found 6 dead deer on my property a few years ago but the DEC was too busy to check them so I'm not positive on the cause. In DEC defense there was a major outbreak south of here so they were doing a lot of testing there. My property has 1/2 mile of stream surrounded by 9 acres of wetlands so it's hard to combat here. I installed 2 hard plastic water tanks and made trails through the wetlands with good stream crossings for the deer to use. Does it help with EHD, I'm not sure but I know I did what I could and I haven't found any dead deer this year.

    Hey Josh great video guy I’ve experienced this in southern Ohio back in 2017 I lost five of the 6 4 1/2 year-old or older to EHD very devastating took four years to get quality bucks back at my farm we have a river with an eighth of a mile of my property that will flood create the mud holes along the banks because of the mountains a very well-known EHD area . Just a thought but I wondered if anybody is working on a vaccine or something like this that you could get into the Deer to prevent the EHD affect ? This disease is very devastating to the national deer herd !!!!

    • @StayWhitetailDriven
      @StayWhitetailDriven 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes your area has been in hit hard in the past sadly. Hard to watch. Not much of a vaccination that I know of or a way to do so. With it not being an airborne issue, vaccinations and such will not help, but a pre caution of less stagnant water is best.

    I don't know much about EHD. I watch Jimmy Houston Outdoors TH-cam channel and he raises deer as a hobby. He has lost a couple deer to EHD and from what I understood from his videos the midge gets up into the deer's nose. I didn't realize they can spread it my biting the animal. Jimmy raises deer for the love of the animal, not profit or money. I think they spray muriatic acid on the ground and use water tanks instead of ponds. I see no reason for finger pointing. From what I understand the midge most likely come from the outside of deer enclosers. Jimmy does have a lake and with the lack of rain the lake drops a few inches everyday creating a new mudline. Its hard to watch deer suffer and die from EHD. Thank God it doesn't spread from deer to deer. Jimmy Houston's deer channel- th-cam.com/users/jhproductions100videos

    • @StayWhitetailDriven
      @StayWhitetailDriven 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points. I does travel into the nasal cavities when drinking and the midge on surface water, and bites are 2 large contributions of the spread. Thanks I appreciate the info and the positive approach to help Folks understand.

    A good portion of Michigan's natural lakes, ponds and other wetlands are finally receding from 50/60 year high levels over the last couple of years. Not sure how any man made effort is going to put a dent in anything. Have you seen the blue within the state from above?

    • @StayWhitetailDriven
      @StayWhitetailDriven 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me... it works. Deer seek small, stagnant water locations. I agree though sadly it's the perfect storm if you will of things leading up to this point, high water levels in years past now lowering leaves you with exposure. The large water sheds are the states concerned and I hope they will react. But as private land owners we can do our part with the water we control and stopping the man made water ponds is the first step. I seen it first hand, delt with it and trust me on this one, it does and can help tremendously.

    I followed the “no summer food” theory on my farm in central KY last year and by the time hunting season arrived, the big bucks had relocated and established their home on summer food on other farms resulting in me shooting jack squat! This year, put in summer food and holding a few 3 year olds. Winter food going in next week. I’m glad you addressed this topic since when others advise people with strong conviction to avoid summer food, it can work in some areas but not in our neck of the woods.

  • @tennesseevalleyrelics3459
    @tennesseevalleyrelics3459 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The truth is that you have eliminated you'r depth of cover added summer food and setting people up for failure and for there neighbors to shoot there bucks . There is no reason why your oldest bucks would ever need to travel to your neighbors property for them to shoot them while all you saw was immature bucks. Probably only during the first week of November. Show people the proof that you were holding those mature bucks every single day during during fall from Oct 1 till December 25 . "Daylight pics" summer deer do nothing as far as holding deer . In fact if you're attracting bucks in the summer you're attracting more does .which is a bad thing. Prove me wrong
