Very cool congratulations
@@antoniodasilva1230 - Obrigado António. I’m happy you enjoyed it, and hope to see you again. 😊👍
Another great show, James. It's been fun getting more familiar with Espinho peaking over your shoulder on your journey. You made some great points too, as usual. 👍🍺
Thanks Hank. I've got some great support. 😉
Yes, quite right, I flew straight from Lisbon tô Hong Kong and it was very confortable, I slept 4 hours because I was arriving at night, everything was perfect - it's a 18 hous flight, 1 hours in Dubai.
Thanks for watching Helena, and for your comment, I hope you are enjoying the channel, and will continue exploring the episodes. And I am happy to know your travels went so well for you. 18 hours is a long flight.
James, I'd love to watch your channel to see how you're faring in a new country. However, just showing these clips of you on this good morning programme is not easy viewing. There's the constant time lag between you two talking, which results in you talking over each other - it's not good. Sorry, all the best.
I'm happy you're interested, and sorry for whatever's going on with the connection. It's true that Carl and I actually DO talk over one another occasionally, and that there are occasional freezes from our connection, but I personally have never had what you are describing, and no one else has mentioned any such problems, so I really don't know what's going on, and I'm sorry it's making it so difficult for you to watch. I do include other content that doesn't involve me on Good Morning Portugal, so maybe those episodes will work for you. Episode 1: My introduction to the channel - Episode 5: My First Day in Portugal, - Episodes 8 & 11: My walks through Ericeira - Episode 16: My First Trip to Ireland Part 3 - and I'm hoping to have my visits to Espinho, Portugal ready for Episode 19. So maybe those won't present the same issues for you, and you can enjoy them. And if that's the solution, please do keep an eye out for the episodes that do not include me on GMP. Unfortunately, that's about all I can offer, and I hope you will continue following my journey. Either way, I completely understand your frustration, and appreciate your interest and your feedback. Thank you.
Hey James! I was just thinking I saw this episode of GMP then I saw my name pop up. So funny.🤣 Thanks!
Yes. Opportunities for nostalgia. Happy you're enjoying the channel.😃

Hello Old Guy in Europe! I was in Portugal for the first time last Nov and I am returning this Nov, I will be in Lagos and then Ericeira. I can't tell you how Ericeira keeps popping up, ever since I discovered it on a You Tube video. Serendipity?? Very nice video, looking forward to watching another.

@@AnOldGuyinEurope Thank you so much, I will watch 8 & 11 later today. I will be in Ericeira from Nov 8-12th, any 'must see/do's'? How is the beach during this time? Any side trips? etc...
@@lynetterosario5697 - What I enjoy about Ericeira most is it's 'vibe' ... I guess you just feel it or you don't. The beaches are beautiful, from Foz do Lizandro at the southern end of Ericeira, to Ribeira D'Ilhas to the north. And by November Ericeira will all be VERY quiet ... maybe even with noone on the beaches. If you're in to old castles (conventos), I would recommend the self-guided tours of 'Palacio da Mafra' in Mafra (about 10-20 minute drive east from Ericeira) on Sundays (I believe it's open every Sunday,' )and you shouldn't need reservations, especially at that time of the year ... and be sure to see the library (it's famous). Create yourself a great vacation.
@@AnOldGuyinEurope Thank you so much for the info, will do!
Welcome to your new home Old Guy! Portugal, as you may have found by now, is far from perfect, but it offers many wonderful chapters and moments in life. Culturally, it can be rough at first. There may be a nr. of ways that may get you frustrated as time goes by, but don't let it get you down. In the end, it all works out, even if at 1st it looks like it is not going to be. I left my little Portugal as a 13 year old, and finally returned home (from Arizona) 40 years later or 6 years ago. It was the best move ever, but it has been an adjustment (after 40 years in the USA) and I am Portuguese, so I can imagine this change for you! Yet, you found Luisa and Sidónio, and what an absolutely wonderful encounter! So much so, you found a home, a new family, and now, even your Portuguese is sounding stellar! You did well in flying TP. Not the best in customer service, but a very safe airline; fly it whenever possible. Don't be afraid to engage with the Portuguese. We can be shy at first or reserved, some may be gruff (depending on the area of the country) but once we realize you are a good guy you become family. Portugal needs people like you. Open minded, that can learn from us, and us from them. Respectful to our country, history, culture, and people. Someone accepting of the fact Portuguese living is different, for we do things real slow here. We enjoy country, people, relationships, family and experiences, more than money itself. Far from being "rich" yet rich in many other ways, that is Portugal. Please get involved and make a difference, because we need that. Again thanks for choosing our little (big)country. I hope you are happy here in Portugal. ❤😊 P. S. Great choice going with Super Bock! Sagres is not bad but SB is the best!!

If you allow me it is the river Tejo not Tagus, i think it is strange to ear people giving foreign names to places.
Obrigado Alexandra. Tagus is how it is said in English ... I don't know why, but there it is. 🤷♀ As I'm sure you know, learning a new language is challenging enough, but then you add the occasional confusion of 'which language do I use when speaking my native tongue about another languages location or thing?' It's mind twisting sometimes. And then I get to add the differences between British English and American English to the mix, and it becomes a real party. I hope you are enjoying the channel, and that I will see you here again. I always appreciate the help from my Portuguese brothers and sisters, so ... mutio obrigado, pela vossa ajuda.
Perhaps in respect to your host country use the Portuguese pronunciation first, then say, "known to English speakers as...whatever it is." Thanks for the video, I agree TAP is a very safe airline, though used to be known for its sometimes bumpy landings! ...@@AnOldGuyinEurope

lol, i've been using a phone translator extensively, (especially dealing with professionals) and my pronunciation is great (a lot of people think I am a fluent Portuguese speaker, but I hardly even know what I'm saying). I will start lessons soon over the winter. My husband was from Alentejo (he did not speak English when we married) so therefore I got the accent down early (28!years). However, I rarely know what I am actually saying. But it is important for acceptance and incorporating into the local culture to make the effort. and I applaud you that. Quite frankly, the coastline along that part of Portugal has always been a direct comparison to Santa Cruz area in California. The coast line, the terrain, the beach, and the microclimate. My son lived in Livermore for a while, and we always drew a comparison directly to the Colares-Sintra area. If I were to live on the mainland, I would've chosen that area as well. Especially close to the coast rather than the mountains. By the way, I watched some more videos and I can't agree with you more about the political landscape in the US. I cut off all social media before I came over in July and things have changed so drastically that I recently reconnected to the news feeds. I too dropped mainstream cable over 15 years ago. There's actually some optimism but I am over it and way too old to be optimistic about the future. That is for my sons and their generations. Right now I am looking for peace, positivity And a realignment of priorities. Good luck and more importantly enjoy enjoy!
Yes. Learning a new language is certainly challenging ... and for me, well worth the effort. I have often referred to the many similarities between California and Portugal in general, and Santa Cruz and Ericeira specifically, (which is what guided me to Ericeira in the first place. I believe MANY Americans (and maybe Californians in particular) decided to move to Portugal for many of the same reasons. Thank you for your thoughts and support.
Interesting . I am a "Velha" in the Azores. After regularly traveling to Portugal since 1982, last year after retiring, I bought a home in Terceira. My original goal was Evora (in Alentejo), but circumstances lead me to choosing the island version of Alentejo instead. I am still infatuated with Portugal (and Europe) so please, power on. I'll enjoy watching your journey and maybe even learn from it. BTW, my graduation gift to my elder son (in 2008) was a ticket to Ericeira for a month to surf (in January). It's an astounding mainland area- great choice. I now face deciding my future of life in the US (or not), loss of passion for US/Florida culture and completing my transition a new life style, (I started 4 years ago). I like that you do not butcher your attempts at Portuguese language - very mindful and respectful. So, thank you.
Olá Sam. E obrigado pelos vossos comentários. ☺ ... and for your encouragement. I am happy you are enjoying the channel, 'and maybe even learning from it.' 😂 Yes. It was my connection to Santa Cruz, CA that led me to Ericeira, and she has taken my heart forever (whether I choose to live there or not). Thank you, too, for noticing my efforts to speak this challenging language correctly and well ... if is fully my intention, and for the reasons you mentioned. I look forward to your continued support, and to your comments ... and I sincerely hope you continue to get value from and enjoy what I share. 🙏
Worth the wait for Ericeira II, great video James. What a beautiful place, can't beat that ocean view. Also, that's quite some shed. It seems symbolic of Portugal, a beautiful treasure inconspicuously hidden in plain sight.
Thank you Steve. I'm happy it was worth the wait for you. Yes, I struck gold when Ericeira was the Santa Cruz, CA of Portugal I was looking for. No matter where I may end up, Ericeira will always have my heart. Thank you for your support. 🙂🙏
What a wonderful way to integrate into the Portuguese community! I’ve watched you on GMP with Carl but now have a much better understanding of how you “landed”
Thank you so much for your comment. I'm happy you enjoyed it. ☺🙏
Those 2 azulejos (8:31 and 8:47) regard the name of the house and its owners, and a religious reference the Our Lady of Fátima; At 14:42, the warning says the water is not drinkable, so don't drink that one. But people apparently use it to wash their feet after leaving the beach (good use of that water); Sintra, like Cascais, is a vila (category between village and town). Althought they could be "promoted" to town, they declined. Sintra, as head of the municipality with the same name, "rules" over 2 towns (Agualva-Cacém and Queluz); James, you really need to get a microphone, one of those protected from the wind with foam (portuguese invention, by Jaime Filipe). 😉😁 Keep up the good work. 👍
Muito obrigado António for your suggestion, all the great information, and for your support and encouragement. I really appreciate it all. 🥰🙏
You should go to Mafra,Sintra and Queluz that are not far from there and have some important places to visit. Enjoy your stay.😊
Obrigado Helena. I have been to and through Sintra, and recently spent a day at Parque Natural Sintra/Cascais, and plan to dedicate a future episode to my time there, and I have visited the Tapada Mafra and the Palacio Nacional de Mafra, but have very little visual content to share, so 'may' need to go again with my channel in mind. I have not been to Queluz, so thank you for your recommendation. It is now on my list of places to see. A few years ago i stayed in Ericeira por three days in a hotel in the main road and we went to Mafra, Queluz and Sintra.
Must have been lovely.
Stay tuned for Part 2, Episode 11, this coming Friday.😊
Fino is the smaller one. There's also principe that is biger or caneca that is the biggest one
Obrigado Helena. Só falo um pouco Português, mas estou aprender. And the differences between north and south manages to complicate things at time ... but, as I said, estou aprender. 😊
Imperial, tulipa e caneca aqui na terra dos mouros 😊😊😊
@@carlossaraiva8213 - Obrigado Carlos. I always appreciate learning more Portuguese language and culture. At this point I'll keep it simple and just use the two regional references. 😅😂
• _THE_ banana slug. • "Slug like" mind...hehehe • 13:10 - No, not 13 hours, more like 9. I'm the one who can't shut up ;-)
Forever Slug's friend on GMP! 😂 ... and forever (for now) finding it difficult to shut up on the occasions I have the opportunity to have an English language conversation ... yakkity-yakkity- yakk ... 😵💫 ... and no question, you are a big help with that ... 🤣
It’s always so fun to watch you two and learning as well. Have a happy day and weekend.
Obrigado Veronica. I am happy you're enjoying it. 😊🥰🙏
The best old guy in Europe. Thanks for sharing, James!!!
Obrigado Hank. So, are you saying this was the best 'episode' (so far), or that you think 'I' am the best old guy in Europe? I think the second would be an ever so slight overstatement. 🤪😂 Either way I always appreciate your support. 🙏
Enjoyed seeing Ericeira, looking forward to part 2!
Thank you Steve, I'm happy to hear it. And thank you for your support.
Great video, James, and your portuguese pronunciation is very good. 😊👍
Muito obrigado, meu amigo. 😊
@@AnOldGuyinEurope Muito mais melhor que meu.
In 1910, when the republican coup d'état took place, Their Majesties King Manuel II and the Queens His mother and grandmother, Dona Amélia de Orleães and Dona Maria Pia de Saboia left the Royal Palace of Mafra for Ericeira. On the fishermen's beach, they boarded the yacht Amélia for exile.
Again, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on these things. THIS I already knew, minus the actual names. 🤪😂
In 1908 there was a regicide in Portugal, in which Freemason republicans assassinated His Majesty King Dom Carlos and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Dom Luis Filipe. The republic was proclaimed through a revolution on 5 October 1910. The Republicans changed many of the names of the main streets and squares in Portuguese cities, especially those named after kings and queens, to "Republic". Portugal had been living under a democratic regime since the liberal revolution of 1822, when the absolutist monarchy was abolished and the 1st constitution was adopted, establishing a constitutional monarchy. From 1910 to 1926 Portugal experienced the first republic, which was very troubled and had many presidents and prime ministers, until the military revolution in 1926 established a dictatorship that lasted until 25 April 1974. On 25 April 1974, through a relatively peaceful revolution, democracy was once again established in Portugal.
Wow. Thank you @augustoserrano. Great information, most of which I hadn't yet learned. Thank you for the education. 🥰 🙏
Very nice! Looks like summer weather in our Bay Area. Especially, this week. So, we’ve learned you love gelado! 😃
Yes, very reminiscent of my days in Santa Cruz. I lived on the other side of the hills when I was in the East Bay, so mostly all I ever saw was the fog attempting to crawl over them, and evaporating as fast as it crawled. I love learning, so I'm always happy when I can facilitate it. Just for the sake of being precise, while I like gelado, what I LOVE is gelato ... two very different things. Mmmmmmm ... 🥰 🤪 😂
Ericeira is beautiful. If it was in the north, I'd live there.
@@hankstalica1922 that’s north to me. I’m not sure yet, but I’m thinking Lisbon to the south somewhere. I’d prefer less fog. I’m from East Oakland, went to UC Berkeley (foggier), lived in San Francisco for a bit (totally foggier). In other words, I’m weather spoiled! 😜
@@Nubianette Gotta tell ya..we had temps in the 70s last week. In August. I'm a fan. We had a couple of days in the 90s, and that's it. Everyone has to find the place where they are happy, but I HATE hot. If you don't want fog or cooler weather, the north isn't for you, to be honest. Find your happy place. That's what's most important.
