Why Taking Care of Yourself as a Teacher Matters: Protect Your Health & Your Classroom 💪
As teachers, we’re often so focused on taking care of our students that we forget to take care of ourselves. In this video, I’m talking about why prioritizing your mental and physical health is crucial-not just for you, but for everyone around you.
I’ll share my own experience of not taking care of myself, which led to getting five other teachers sick and even caused our school to close for a day due to lack of staff. This experience taught me that taking care of yourself truly means taking care of those around you and showing respect for your co-workers and the families who trust you with their children.
I’ll also discuss why it’s important to set boundaries with parents about not accepting sick kids into your classroom for the sake of everyone’s health. Remember, if you take care of yourself first, you’re often taking care of others at the same time. Let’s make this year one where we prioritize our well-being so we can be our best selves for our students!

Like maybe before we use markers for the first time…I’d use that one in small group. The free choice center books I’ve read before we introduce the center in small group, or if there’s been a rough day at a center as a review.

    So I revisited this podcast and I have a few questions. It is mentioned that you change your block center daily. What does that look like exactly? I have always been required to basically put all my center toys out. So in my block center are two types of wooden blocks, trains, foam blocks, cardboard blocks along with toy tools, people, animals, etc. I would love to just have one type of toy out per day but may not be allowed to do that. Also, my school does centers twice a day with the same class. Wouldn't the kids get bored with access to only one or two toys? The only closet I have is a shared closet in the hallway. You also say you set up toys for kids to play with on 3 tables. So, I have only two long tables (one we use to serve breakfast). I only have two other smaller tables (Discovery and Dramatic play). I think we will have another small table in the library (for writing). My room is an awkward shape and in a basement. Thank you for any ideas!

    • @teachpre-k101
      @teachpre-k101 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi...I am happy to answer your questions. I only change my block center each day during the first week of school to introduce the kids to a variety of building toys and how to use them. After that, I change it weekly. I will duplicate building materials several times during the year but will add different animals, action figures, etc. for mini centers that I do on the 3 tables at arrival, you might have to use your rug, or other areas in your room. it doesn't have to be a table. That just makes sense for my tiny room. My classroom is in a basement as well...so I totally understand the life of the basement dweller. not ideal, but workable.

      We are a private school and have some different licensing guidelines. in 16 years I have never had a child go for the wipes...not ever. But I do keep an eye on things and they know there are ares they cannot go. We use baby wipes when they help clean tables and placemats, then we go over everything with safe sanitizing sprays and use hot soapy water on the placemats with a good rinse. I am so excited to see the end result of the self portrait project too...it is my favorite of the year! My 3-4's are so young this year...I'm sure it will be the wonkiest looking bulletin board yet! "How to make a grown man cry!" My 4 year old daughter is on her 3rd day of PreK4. The teachers there are so helpfull and understanding. Unfortunately but not unfortunatly, my daughter is the only one who cries during drop off. Our current strategy right now is to tell her that she has to go to school and learn with other kids while mom and dad has to go to work so we can buy milk and toys. Parent's need to remember that anything you say, your child will remember what you said! The hard part right now is thinking about the seperation for me. Only work keeps me going. Another thing is, I am lucky enough to have Grandma pick up my daughter. She expects mom or dad to pick her up and cries when we do on the first day. I took grandma the next day and she didn't cry because I knew it's a different feeling when someone else close in the family picks her up. One other thing is, we park and walk to the pick up area. We stay close hiding behind the buikding pillar or a tree so she doesnt see us. Once she is at her pick up spot, we walk out at a few steps distance. It doesnt give her enough time to think about crying. The first day we walked to the pick up area. She saw us from a distance and cried like crazy! So being very close gives her no time to cry! And talk to your teacher!!!! Be open! Im glad my daughter has a great team at her school. Thank you for the video and explanation. Lessens my anxiety!

      We used to have an on site speech therapist, but not anymore. Now we can only do referrals. It is a sad thing, because preschoolers need it and families are so busy. Getting it taken care of during the school day was perfect.

      I don't have space for a calm down corner, but I do have a quiet corner adjacent to my tiny library center. My classroom is super small. I would love a science/discovery center, a calm down corner, a playdough center, a listening center, and a computer center...but alas...I am limited on space.

      @teachpre-k101 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I just looked up Notion...very cool. I think it would be worth trying oout. I'm so visual and I have to mark things up with notes. What comes from my head to my hand to paper sticks with me longer than just computer screen based things. I have gone through 100's of notebooks when creating resources, lesson plans and curriculum activities. It is my way of processing. I have made my planning materials for both methods and types of people...but I'm a pen and paper gal. Not because I'm older either...I know my way around a ton of computer programs...I process more thoroughly when I can make notes with a pen. It's weird I know, but my husband's 25 year old business partner is the same! She takes notes and goes through tons of notebooks too! Thanks for turning me on to Notion. I am going to spend some time perusing this weekend

I also save a million things to Google Docs and my Drive. I really need a way to narrow down ideas I find online when it comes to a theme I must folllow. Glad you wanted to check out Notion. 🙂

Take it slowly, spend more time than you think you need on routines and procedures. Just know that there are days that will seem like absolute chaos...that is perfectly normal. I still have those days...its 3-5 year-olds...it is naturally chaotic! Give yourself grace and patience!

      Thank you! I usually say something like "We are waiting for Jonah and Cleo to make a better choice, then we will go". I say the names pretty loud and then a few kids near them will tell them to be quiet so we can go. Or if I have an aide...Jonah & Cleo can finish talking while the rest of us go out. Jonah & Cleo usually pay better attention for a few days after that. (They get quiet super quick and usually end up at the tail end of the line! All is done in a happy and non-judegmental way...just consequences to actions.

    I love the signs you have! I have similar signs in my classroom that have been joined by signs of real kids with real centers because someone over our state education system believes that the children will somehow be out of touch with reality if I have a cartoon or drawn/painted sign next to the book cozy real kids use real books at....and science center, dramatic play, and so forth. I love my originals, so where space is available I have them side by side with the state-required.

I've been making a lot of my classroom theme posters with real photo images...but center signs? I like them graphic! The kids aren't stupid...they know real kids play with blocks and read books...it's ok to see a representation sometimes...people overthink silly things sometimes.
