I talked to James about the challenges of shooting an action film on a micro budget, we talked about how difficult it was shooting during Covid, the advantages and disadvantages of that. We talked about the challenges of promoting your own film, James is with Indie Rights so we talked about his decision to go with them. And of course we talked about some classic action movies and what's influenced his movie. Enjoy!

Another great interview. As someone who's movie just hit Tubi right before Christmas I know how you feel about promotion. I had signed up for Filmhub and uploaded all the artwork and at the last minute decided to go with a distributor that specializes in micro budget black cinema films and has a dashboard that updates sales information every 24 hours. But I plan to try Filmhub next. Promoting your film is definitely a full time job and since I'm a graphic designer (day job) I'm experimenting with various things to get my film in front of people's eyes. Don't neglect your community Facebook groups. I'm not talking about the filmmaking ones. I live in the Poconos and in the summer I started posting photos of my holding the camera filmming on the side of the road with quotes like, "I'm sure some of you saw me shooting my short film on Golden Slipper road today". WHich piqued the interest of the local community. I got all kinds of interest and job offers. Lol. Then when my film came out on Tubi... I posted about it in those same groups and they spread the posts so much and watched in droves so much so that I wound up on Tubi's recommeneded list (for only about 6 hours lol). I'm trying other means of promotion as well to take advantage of the whole local support thing.

That was a real smart idea about getting funding. Hey has Tiff ever thought of going and filming a bigger film in Vietnam? Back in the day the Phillipines was like the spot for making B movies and such. Wonder if bringing moviemaking to destinations like Vietnam would take it to another level.

Great watch. Imagine moving to Asia because your're a fan of Asian films. Lol. That's awesome. I love the deal he arranged with some of his actors. I didn't really have money for my actors up front so I made a deal with them that for every 10k we hit they'd get $200 for every day that they worked on set. This kinds of incentivizes them to promote the film more because the more we make the more they get. I thought I was going to go through the same distribution crap as well but I only chose one that I wanted to go with and if they said no i was going to through Filmhub. I had everything ready to go for FIlmhub, poster sizes, info, etc.. all I had to do was upload my film... but I heard back from my distributor with 24 hours of submitting my film so it worked out. Is there no equivalent to Filmhub in Europe or Asia?

As a black writer/director who just landed his first film on Tubi this interview in particular was very interesting to me. My first movie is a romantic - drama - comedy. I grew up in the violence of the crack period living in the Projects of NYC where sometimes you slept in the tub to not catch a stray bullet going through your window. I personally, won't do sex and drugs type films. I lived through that crap and feel no need to romanticize that kind of shit.

I remember going to a play 1996 maybe? It was Tom, Mark Wingett, & a couple of others. I can picture one but can’t think of his name. I’m sure there was one more. I know it was above a pub somewhere in London 😂 god I’m not good at descriptions am I? Anyhow it’s nice to see Tom is still around. Enjoyed the podcast. I’ll get your film downloaded. Good Luck & say hi to Tom for me 😊 p.s I think I found him on X ugh labour fan 🙇🏻‍♀️ poor old Nigel…I voted for Nigel 😂

Great work Hakim. I also love film. I have done a couple of work. my latest documentary was nominated at the 2023 Uganda Films Festival. I have never attended any film class but I would love to do so. Any guidance is needed.

Hakim is clearly a very talented filmmaker and a well-known name back at home in Uganda. He brings the missing "finesse" into the Ugandan filmmaking landscape, that we lack here. The man to keep an eye on! Great interview, thank you!

This guy is a great smoke seller and in his group he is a dictator. They cannot criticize him.
