John Watlen (1764-1833), and nine others: The Celebrated Circus Tunes, Book I (Complete)
World Première Recording
“New” composers in this recording include: 1) John Watlen (1753-1833);
2) “A young Lady” 3) Miss C. Dalrymple 4) Mary Elizabeth Leslie Ruthven (1757-1820)
5) Captain Callander 6) Dr Henry Harrington (1727-1816)
7) Mr Holland 8) Countess Balcarres (i.e. Lady Elizabeth Lindsay, 1763-1858) 9) “A Lady” 10) Mr Clarkson
This collection of “Tunes”, published in 1792, contains music by John Watlen, but also by a number of others. In addition, there are many pieces that do not bear the name of their creator; they are mostly popular tunes of the time. Here is a list of the composers represented in the volume; I have marked with an asterisk (*) all of those composers who are “new” to my list of recorded composers. Those thus marked are all very minor composers, almost certainly amateurs. What is a bit surprising is the number of women in this list: at that time, composing and publishing music was an occupation considered to be “beneath” ladies of good standing. Apparently, by 1791, such outdated prejudices were disappearing, at least in the British Isles.
Anonymous: All pieces that do not state the composer in parentheses

John Watlin, who in early manhood was an office in the Royal Navy, later became a “Music seller and Music Instrument Manufacturer”, though he obviously composed music as well. In addition to the pieces that bear his name, Watlen also seems to have arranged the many anonymous tunes for performance on a keyboard, or violin and bass.

    Who built the harpsichord? It sounds more like a fortepiano. That’s not the Empfindsamer Stil, by the way. Nor is it very good music.

    • @thedigitalharpsichordist1541
      @thedigitalharpsichordist1541 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The sound samples are from a harpsichord by Fleischer, dated about 1720. About the style: though not written in the period in the period we normally refer to as producing works in the "empfindsamer Stil", the tender expression of emotion here puts it, in my view into this general category. (One might also call it "very early romantic"). That it "isn't very good music"...well, that one made me laugh, because I do agree! However, on the other hand, must we ALWAYS compare every piece of music to that of the "greats": Bach, Beethoven, Mozart.? Music can simply be "pretty", and therefore have at least some entertainment value, without being especially "good" using higher standards. Also: hearing music that is "beneath" the works of the greats can serve to make us even more keenly aware of just how good those "greats" were in actuality (which is one of the reasons why I like to record music from second-rate, or even third-rate composers: it makes me appreciate all the more the truly excellent music produced by my "favorite" composers: Bach, Scarlatti, Handel, Froberger, Cabezón, and others.) I wish you a fine day!

    There's an harp sonata in E-flat major by Vicente Martín y Soler in Imlsp, i would love to hear it on the harpsichord, i don't think anyone has ever recorded it on any instrument I wish you a nice week!!

    • @thedigitalharpsichordist1541
      @thedigitalharpsichordist1541 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the tip! I just had a look at that sonata, thinking maybe I could do it, but then I saw that it also has a violin part (though "ad libitum"), and it looks to me as though in this case, it would need that part. Also: there are series of big chords in the piece that would sound fine on harp, but not so well on harpsichord. Thus, I don't think I will do it after all. But if you find anything else you might like to hear, and is more appropriate for solo harpsichord, do let me know!

    I listened to several symphonies of Toeschi. He's an average caliber "Mannheimer", nice music, bit lacking the strong personality of the Cannabich's, Stamitz, etc. Interesting to notice this keyboard piece, although a stand alone, presents much higher independence and personality, completely away from the Mannheim mainstream.

    JP Rameau is an underrated genius like Telemann.

    He was one of the precursors of the "new" galant style in his time,as you can hear in this piece❤

    Could you record the other five sonatas from the same set, please? They are quite marvellous. Thanks for sharing.

      I have made a note of it, though I don't know when I will get around to it, since there are so many other composers on my list. But you are right, these little sonatas are quite nice. Maybe I will do the second sonata of this set in the not-too-distant future.

    Was this done with a MIDI? There is virtually no rhythmic inflection.

    • @thedigitalharpsichordist1541
      @thedigitalharpsichordist1541 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I use midi, but I actually play the works, and never scan them. This was simply my take on these pieces when I played them at the time. Thanks for listening!

    R. Courtville may be remembered by some as the composer of the hymn tune 'St James'

    Where did you find the score for this? I've longed for the complete surviving keyboard works of Courtville, Morgan, Barrett, and Piggott to be published, BTW.

      As explained in the text above, these pieces are in "The Harpsichord Master", a volume which you should be able to find at imslp.org. Unfortunately, that's all I have by these composers; I don't know of any complete edition of their pieces. Thanks for listening!

    Una música mística, sobria, no es para escucharla en cualquier momento. La austeridad de la obra de Antonio de Cabezón requiere de su ambiente. Recordemos que es la España, Castilla en el Renacimiento... y quien no conoce la Historia puede verse inmerso en cierta confusion y de ese modo no podrá disfrutar de esta música.

      Si, entiendo bien lo que dice Vd. A mi siempre me ha encantado la música de este gran maestro, quizá porque corrensponde a mi propio lado "místico".
