Craftsman Beltsander Model 113.226424 Stopping the Squeal
The squeal is 110dB at 3 feet. I have to wear ear protection to use the beltsander. I normally wear ear protection while using all my shop equipment. But, I finally decided to fix the squeal. Here are my notes. It is a simple fix. Use the same grease that you lubricate your car chassis. The squeal is in the idler bearing not the main bearing that is driven by the motor.
The nice thing about the vintage Sears equipment is that they are easy to maintain and common parts can be found at any hardware store to fix them.

Marble Pump: Key Dimensions, Alignment, Operation
มุมมอง 2535 ปีที่แล้ว
First, I show you my marble pump working. Then, at 2:36, I explain the key critical dimensions of the "pump" mechanism itself: the slider, shuttle (piston) and crank. The dimensions are based on the marble diameter. The design of the marble pump is left up to you. This is an intermediate project. The hypocycloid gear is part of the Derek Hugger's "Contrivance" plans (A great way to learn about ...
Nikon HB45 Lens Hood Repair
มุมมอง 5066 ปีที่แล้ว
Use E6000 adhesive to re-attach the backplate to the hood of the Nikon HB45 lens hood. Nikon used a silicon adhesive to assemble the mechanism. E6000 works well for this application. Be sure to allow adequate time for the adhesive to cure. I was surprised the hood came apart. I did not expect that. It is an easy fix until I find a better lens hood. Fortunately, when it came apart, it was in my ...
Singer Featherweight Replacing a Latch
มุมมอง 2.6K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I show you how I repair a latch on a Singer Featherweight. The split rivets are steel and are hard to unbend. I show how I unbent the rivets to minimize disturbing the Tolex liner. I prefer to restore antique items with as many original parts as possible. The repair is also applicable to the other split rivet attached parts such as the hinge and locking mechanism.
Singer Featherweight Late 1930's Case Features

Some features of a late 1930's Singer Featherweight carrying case. Did you ever notice the fabric covering inside? I have a picture of it in this video. Check to see if your case has the same ornate fabric covering inside.
Bandsaw Steps for Cutting Veneer
มุมมอง 4576 ปีที่แล้ว
Upgrading to roller guides allows the saw to easily perform resaws and cut veneer. Block guides that were standard with the original saw were not consistent. Roller guides make cutting veneer a breeze. The price of the upgrade components were worth it.
Craftsman 12 in Bandsaw Tension and Alignment
มุมมอง 8K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The tension has 2 key points. 1) The correct tension has only about 1/4" of play in the blade and 2) The blade makes a nice note when plucked like a bass guitar. The thrust and guide bearings are adjusted to be exactly the thickness of a business card away from the blade.
Why I upgraded from Blocks to Bearings
มุมมอง 6976 ปีที่แล้ว
I explain some reasons why I upgraded from block to bearing blade guides. The upgrade is expensive, but the first cut I made using the roller guides was instantly gratifying. Wow, I should have done this a couple of years ago.
Craftsman 12 in Guide Upgrade
มุมมอง 27K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I shot this video as I upgraded from block guides to roller guides. It took about 30 minutes. With block guides, it was frustrating to cut a lot of parts out, I couldn't get consistent intricate cuts and I gave up on cutting veneer or doing re-saw work. See my video on Bandsaw Steps for cutting Veneer to see the very first attempt using roller guides. It was well worth the money spent on the up...

Hi Jim, I don’t know if you respond to comments, but have you ever used the 12” craftsman with the tilt head? It has a different guide system that is a lot more janky with the old steel guides. I was wondering if you had any idea what the difference was between the different colors or brands of urethane tires is. Some are 2 for $16, while some are $30 each

Jannie, the bad news is that there isn't a supplier. The good news is that there is only one latch design. So, if you find one on the internet, it will fit. If you can't find one with the rivets, then you can use screws. There are specialty screws that look like they have a smooth button top and use a nut on the inside.

@@jimwhiteside3719 are all the rivets on a featherweight case the same size and shape? I am trying to restore a case for my 1943 featherweight. I removed all of the Tolex and will have to replace the bottom of the case. Do you know where I can get replacement feet for the case and the hardware to hold the leather d-ring handle onto the case?

    • @jimwhiteside3719
      @jimwhiteside3719 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DeniseArnaud-q3o All the rivets are the same. There isn't any place that sells new or replica hardware. With vintage guitar amps, there are sources that sell hardware for Fenders, Marshall, etc. Because there is a huge demand. No so for vintage Singer machines. I normally surf the web for cannibalized parts. Otherwise, I resort to using small decorative hardware that looks nice. Rather than rivets, a screw can be used (generally stronger, easier to install and more reliable anyway.) Sorry that I don't have a better source for parts. If you find one, please share it here for everyone.

Mine works well enough as is. $210 is a bit much for an upgrade I can easily do without. Something that is definitely worthless are the blue tire replacements.
