Thermostat Bypass & Radiator Hose Mod
Detailed video on replacing the radiator hoses and bypassing the thermostat on a KTM 300. We use a less expensive hose option than Samco, it's from Tusk. You can get the hose kits from Rocky Mountain ATV for about $50 vs from Samco @ $120. Hose fit is near perfect. We also discuss options for protecting the lower radiator hose from rubbing against the power valve housing and creating a leak.
I was not able to find a detailed TH-cam video like this on replacing the radiator hoses and bypassing the thermostat so I made this one! This video is of a 2020 KTM 300 XCW , 2 stroke, but could apply to other bikes as well.
Leave me some comments on what you think and if it helped you. Enjoy!

Twin Hills Dirt Bike Ride - Bridgeport, Tx
I still get such a kick out of this video, Ronnie. I think my skill at riding dirt now is better with your guidance as well as some training from the venerable Pat Jacques after my 5 month stint in Colorado coupled with Wyoming BDR! Thanks for the adventure, my friend. I hope our paths...er, our trails...cross again soon. MewZiKat from Tennessee
Hello, did you need to replace the t piece or just the hoses?
The T-Piece is the thermostat. If your goal is to remove the thermostat then you'll need to leave that out and just use the hoses as described on the video. Skip to 5:49 in the video
Did you have to bleed the coolant at the head? Water temp sensor. On my 22 TE300i I have to do that.
Leave the radiator cap off and I put a little coolant in and rock the bike from side to side then put a little more in and rock the bike from side to side. Rinse & repeat until full. You will hear an air burp at some point most likely. Should work same on a two-stroke as well as a 4-stroke.
on my TE I also have to loosen the water temp sensor and let some coolant out. I’ve been through it before.
The KTM manual says to do what @4JMcCart said. I also have a 2020 KTM xcw 300. While I’m sure the side to side does a good job the thermostat is a high point and some air might get trapped. It’s really easy to do when flushing or changing hoses on the radiator. Thanks for the video creation and sharing your experience and knowledge!
have a question. just put my c weight on. unfortunately two screws are just spinning in their place when i put them back in. removed the screw looks like there is some metal filings in the thread of the bolt. Suggestions on where i should go from here?
It sounds like the bolt threads in the clutch housing are stripped, possibly from over tightening. You can retap the bolts but may want to let a motorcycle mechanic look at it first to determine the best course of action. Best of luck.
@ronnies2wheeladventures sounds good I'll do that thank you
You did good!
how much should this cost at a shop?
At a dealer about $300-350. Indpendent shop maybe less. You can do it yourself for ~$120ish if you can find the TUSK brand for your bike from Rocky Mountain ATV.
You would have to agree that filling the rear tyer with concrete would have a better result?yes?
Nice video well done.
Thank you!
Does it have any negative affect on the bike over long term? Just wondering
I dont believe there is a negative affect long term as long as the clutch weight is installed correctly. I sold this bike after about 50 hours of use after clutch weight installed with no issues.
How’s it running
Runs cooler for sure. Hottest part of the Summer yet to come. Fan doesn't cycle nearly as much. This mod works best in warmer climates.
Any chance you can tell me where to get some of that pool repair hose?
Go to any pool supply store, like Leslie's, if you have one in your area . If you know a pool repair and maintenance company you probably could buy a small piece from them for just a few bucks.
Thanks for the vid and details on this. Funny, I just got back to CT last night from riding in Moab over the last three days(riding trip of a life time 😎). I got the Tusk hose kit while I was away and am about to head out and do the thermostat delete on my 22 250 XC-w. Its a fairly simple job, but I thought I'd look for vid on it to make sure I don't miss anything.
Thanks for the view and subscribing! Hope you had good weather in Moab. I love that place! Did you drive the whole way? The tusk silicone hoses are a superb value compared to Samco. Let me know how the installation goes and how you like the Tusk hoses. Will you be posting any Moab videos?
@@ronnies2wheeladventures Two days of sun and nice temps, one in rain, wind and cold(on Slick Rock no less 🤣) Going through tons of footage from Moab is whole other project, but I will be posting vids . We flew out and rented bikes from Tyler at Ride Moab Industries. I use many Tusk products.. Usually they are an amazing value, these hoses seem to be just that..
Did it feel like you lost a lot of top end power?
I haven't noticed a power loss. There may be a loss but it is so small you are not likely to notice. It's a good trade off to help with the occasional low speed stalls.
Nice radiator protection! What brand is that?
Was on the bike when I got it. Never heard of them but they make some good stuff. The website appears to be in Europe. Not sure who US suppliers are. www.artafon.com/gb/
Very helpful 👍
Glad to hear that, thanks
I have a Subaru Forester stock which has 8.7 ground clearance with some A/T tires. The closer to the end if it becomes more technical after your rides do you think this car would be able to safely make it up going this same route you did on Sand Flats?
I've seen Hyundai's and minivans on that road with lower ground clearance than you have. It's a graded, maintained gravel/dirt road. You should be able to make it with no problems in your Subrau. Go have fun! You will love it!
Did this help with the stalling?
Definitely helped some with low speed stall outs.
You just cleared up something for me and that was to block the thermostat outlet thanks
Happy we were able to help!
