[Arrangement] FFIV OST - Welcome to Our Town for String Quartet
This is another of my arrangements for my students to play. I feel nostalgic about this piece because it is the first Final Fantasy game I have ever played, which I found on PS1. I love it and want to present how I feel through this arrangement.
I hope you enjoy my music. Feel free to like, subscribe, and leave comments.

    Wow, each variation holds true to the nature of the theme. This quality is incredibly rare to see on youtube in my opinion. I have a few questions: Have you gone to Music school before? What books do you use to study composition?

    • @OphatTaerattanachai
      @OphatTaerattanachai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      English is not my native language, so the following answers may be quite difficult to understand, or misleading. But I'm trying my best to deliver my best answer for each question. Q: Have you gone to Music school before? A: I am a self-taught composer, arranger, singer, and musician until 2014 when I got into the music conservatory for my Master's degree in music composition. I graduated in 2018. (FYI, my bachelor's degree is in law.) Q: What books do you use to study composition? A: That is quite a hard question to answer. I read a lot of books, but none was specifically about composition. Instead, I like to listen to various music and analyze them by looking at the score (if possible), trying to find out how they work, or reading articles about their concepts or techniques. As I'm a self-taught composer for more than half of my life, I like to do and try many things myself. And that also comes to my compositional approach. Moreover, music theories are, in my opinion, the best instruments to understand and dissect music in various categories. So, I always encourage music students to learn more theories, not for what they are, but for how to use them to obtain their ideas, concepts, perceptions, or techniques. And since late 2019, I have been occasionally giving lectures in music theory classes at the local university in my hometown. But they are more like a hobby as well as composing, and studying in music. That's why I'm so slow in composition. I don't have much free time. I hope that my answer can clear up your curiosity. I'm trying to keep it short. But feel free to ask if it is something that I can answer. P.S. I have another variation piece on my channel. I don't know if you have already listened to that. It is "15 Variations on the Theme of 'Toei-Khong'" for Piano. The theme is the traditional music around the region of my hometown. And each variation is after different piece from different composer in western music history. (I recommend trying to figure out the piece and the composer before reading the answer in its description.) I would like to hear your opinions about it, if you please. Thank you. :D

      @@supasayajinsongoku4464 No. I have read a lot of them. I also give a lecture on Counterpoint, Music Theory, and Musical Form and Analysis at the university. Here are some recommendations, which I always use as the reference for my lecture. - Tonal Harmony with an Introdution to Twentieth-Century Music by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne - Harmony in Context by Miguel A. Roig-Francoli - Harmonic Practice in Tonal Picture by Rober Gauldin There are more of them, but these are the good starting points to get into music theory and harmony. Also, some are in Thai language that I always recommend for my students to buy and read. They are easier to understand for them because they are in my native language.

    It is very interesting to me that looking outwards, these pieces are entirely in theyre own world; having their own (harmonic) language and style. But looking inwards, the compositions are so various, so creative with its language, and most importantly they all feel at home within the set. I think that these pieces would be a great resource for compositional study, as the use of harmony and form is exemplary in my opinion. I think its important that the listener hears these pieces in relation with another, such that the distinctions can be made with the main theme which is clearly prevelant throughout all preceeding pieces. With this context, the listener can bring these individual pieces together, and appreciate the set as a whole. Also the descriptions match the music so well!! For instance, the pulses of light and the quintuplet figurations in the 9th are absolutely genius. There are so many other things, but this comment would be way too long!!

      Thank you so much. I appreciate your comment because it is always constructive and helps me improve my music. This set is an adventure for me, compared to the other pieces I had composed during that period. All in all, thanks a lot. Hope to see you around here again with my next compositions. :)

    yeah its long comment i apologise I am VERY convinced that this piece hasnt recieved as much attention as it shoudlve due to how late it was in the stream. However i am also convinced that i genuienly found a good piece - not something that i skip halfway through to get to the "good part", just genuiene good music all way through. And through this ive probably found a shit ton load of good, well crafted pieces which are entirely original. And damn, all is left really is to thank you for making this music, and for putting in what seems like a good amount of effort and care, even though for now they arent getting the love they deserve. I remember hearing the piece once on the august composition stream and its been stuck in my head for so damn long(i think it might how many times the theme reprises, and how damn catchy it is), so i went out of my way to look for the origin of composition via the comments section and when i read it was part of a WHOLE set i knew i was gonna be in for some really good music So yeah you geniuenly deserve more love man your music is of a quality which is not easy to come by.

      Thank you so much that you enjoy my music. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I'm very happy that you can still remember the piece even after that long time. I don't upload much on my channel as I'm a very slow composer. And composition is only my hobby. During my current art block, you can listen to something else you find to your liking around here. Hope to see you again when I've got something new on my channel.

    Hey I'm a big fan of yours. It's amazing you compose some classical stuff. I am composing a classical string quartet. But how do you get comfortable with orchestration? When you started was there anything that helped you with figuring out how to have each instrument play a good part? I'm a little confused with how I should go about it. I have wrote some duets but a quartet seems tricky. I'd really appreciate some feedback. Thanks. Ps. I don't think there's much to improve on. You're a really good composer!

      Hi there, First, thanks for your kind regards. I'm highly appreciated. Second, about the orchestration, I always look into other composers' scores. When I found some good sounds that they do in their pieces, I will try to check up on their score and try to figure out what and how they do to create that exact sound or effect. This method of learning takes a lot of time, but it is worth your effort. This way, you'll develop your own taste and some set-ups in various styles. Also, you'll learn to orchestrate so many timbres with your instrumentations. Third, how to give each instrument a good part? This one is a very tricky question. But for me, I always think of the sound in my head first. Let's think of how you pass a melodic line between each instrument. The most important thing is how you build a "Phrase." The safest way to make a good phrase is to let only one instrument carry on that melodic phrase through the line. Then, think of how to accompany that phrase. This depends on how you voice your accompaniment. A good knowledge of basic counterpoint and chordal voicing will give it to you. I recommend reading some textbooks about that and practicing a lot. Also, to make the accompaniment not overpower the melodic line, you have to understand the timbre and power of each instrument. Peter Lawrence Alexander's "Professional Orchestration" and Alfred Blatter's "Instrumentation on Orchestration" will give you some basics and fundamentals of instrumentation and orchestration. Lastly, about the string quartet, Violin, Viola, and Cello have very close timbre if you have them play on the same technique. (For example, all arco, all pizzicato, etc.) So, if you choose to play all the same, there are normally 2 options; a moving melodic line with a static accompaniment, and a loud melodic line with a soft accompaniment. You can check up on my other Arrangement video. I hope they can give you some examples of how to orchestrate a string quartet. Hope this comment could help you in some ways. P.S. Sorry for my bad English. English is not my native language. I'm sorry if some of my words seem odd or out of place.

      @@OphatTaerattanachaiMan that really helps! Wow thank you! I would have never known English isn't your native language. I will definitely check out the books. This really helps me. I'm self taught. So sometimes it's tricky to find helpful advice. I really can't thank you enough. Keep writing! Honestly when I heard your polka from children's pieces I thought you were a genius.

      @avasmith9059 Well, I've also been a self-taught composer until I'm 24 when I had gotten my first proper music education. So, I know how hard it is to learn something by oneself. But don't give up. You can improve as long as you always hunger for knowledge and practice some new things. Now, I'm 33 and still have a lot more to learn and practice. So, it's never too late. If you can find a proper education, I highly recommend that. But if not, it's okay to ask for advice, which I hope my advice are helpful enough for you. Also, you can check up on other channels on TH-cam that teach and give some good lessons and techniques on music composition. Here are some that I've subscribed to; - 8-bit Music Theory - 12tone - David Bruce Composer - Adam Neely - Musica Universalis - David Bennett Piano - OrchestrationOnline - Nahre Sol Hope this would help. And lastly, thank you so much.
