Best Ever MotoGP Qualifying Lap Mick Doohan TT Assen June 26 1998 YT
มุมมอง 717K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The qualifying session is stopped because off the crash with Ralf Waldmann. There is only 2 minutes and 12 seconds left off qualifying time. Still this is enough for Mick Doohan and he is going for the pole position. Watch and enjoy!

I have watched gp since late 70s, bar none this era late 90s and doohan the best there ever was. Some may have more wins or titles but on the baddest bikes ever mick owned everyone. Even todays best wpuld never beat him on a 500 2 stroke. He was the best ever period end of argument. Taming 200hp 2 stroke with 3000 rpm powerband was awesome. Sorry young folks todays guys on electronic controlled 4 strokes with much better suspension and tires are not even in his class. He was the on board computer. And he was the man
Legend
It wasn't called MOTO GP.. 500 GP !!
If you want an all in experience of a truly potent bike......get on one of these beasts, forget kawasaki's "widowmaker" gp 500's were another planet, they wanted to put you in hospital every time you got comfortable with their looney powerband.you literally ride from second to second.takes proper balls to even think about taming one of them.
Has the circuit changed since this? I ask because the lap record is around 1:34 for motogp
Norick was my idol after wayne rainey retired. Just bcoz my father ride yamaha 2stroke RX
Miss those days. Seeing Mick Doohan rides was fascinating.
man I loved that moto GP in the 90s and early 2000s ... used to watch it with my old man ... fun times.
This was when it wasn’t boring. By that I mean it seems now the same brand Mfg. & same riders.
A great era for Moto GP. Doohan used to give the yanks fits.
For so long he and the NSR were in a parallel universe.
Honda and Doohan like Honda and Senna - 2 of the most exciting pilots in the history of motorsports, and both titans getting pole position.. Definitely their eras were respectively the best
Great video, it was the golden era of moto GP. The bikes are so boring these days and has lost the excitement that it used to have.
it would be very interesting to see how some of today's Moto GP guys would fare on one of these EVIL 500's -
They wouldn’t Abs traction control etc etc The 2 stroke era yah right wrist was all of the above
I wouldn't mind qualifying 2nd behind Mick any day of the week - great job Simon
We are so lucky to have Simon as a commentator now. So much experience. Wow
I was there, the race on Sunday was a belter.... and not a leg dangle to be seen. I wish modern riders would knock that silly fad off
Abe was a great racer
That’s when the Assen layout was AWESOME
I wish we would go back to this type of qualification… exiting! Young Crafar lost the pole.
no electronics assists and stupid fin. the best generation.
Cooles rider of the GP ever.... 😊
Doohan is a god amongst men That’s an NSR500 Mick tamed it for so many years
Not even Mick Doohan can pass everyone in 1 corner, give him 6 corners in this one and the competition is obliterated, yep even Simon crafar can't believe it himself lol😂😂😂😂
That was an absolute masterclass from one of the greatest there will ever be. Wow!
alot of fans seem to forget what a bad ass Simon Crafar was -
The glory days of the 2-strokes! The ability of those riders to tame that aggressive power delivery with no rider aids… I wish Wayne and Mick hadn’t had their bad offs in 92 and 93(I really feel for Wayne more though, having had a somewhat similar injury), just think how the battles may have gone throughout the 90s. I was lucky enough to see them race against each other in person though. Mick won! 🇦🇺 Simon Crafar was so sportsmanlike in this, he wanted to shake Mick’s hand!
So, so many anecdotes about Mick Doohan. I met him three times and he was the consummate gentleman but only for as long as he needed. He was always more comfortable in his own company I think. When asked by a journalist why he went back to the screamer his reply was that anyone could ride the Honda big bang engine (and it was reconned to be quicker as a consequence) and he wanted to prove it was his own riding that put him out front. Few would argue. Another piece of tech he eschewed was the quick shifter and HRC telemetry indicated he was quicker at shifting than Creville even without it.
Very interesting to see Norick Abe and Mick Doohan together, similarity of riding style
Not to disrespect Mick who obviously is an all-time legend, but nothing compared to what MM did at COTA in 2015, with the second bike after jumping a wall and running through the pit-lane. In a field where there were Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.
Mick was so dominant for so long it was like no one else even there.
Someday there will be 2 stroke 1000cc made? OMG those tires better stick like rubber cement, the day that happens. " LITERALLY "!😉🤪
yea the three Michaels. Schumacher, Jordan and Doohan. All GOATS, guess it must be the name.
Awseome: first time witnessing this….
Boy the 500 cc era was wild!
So smooth and economical of movement.
You could recognize Norifumi Abe from the distance. His style was unique. R.I.P. my friend.
Old Assen.... Magic !
Not MotoGP - 500GP. They are completely different.
NO tyre warmers, NO Aero, NO Rear ride height devices.... but Bez set 131.472 in 2023 qualifying....
Doohan is totally faster ever😮
Despite the urgency of the situation after rubbing his eyes and slowly getting on the bike Mick spends 10 seconds posing for camera men @1:27 - 1:37. (edit: or is he looking at the screens in the garage or his Mrs?) Absolute legend whatever he's doing
Doohan was the most intense racer on the grid! I’m certain that if he wasn’t a GP rider he would be a serial killer! Lol…just kidding Mick- please don’t hurt me
4:06 When the show begins
It begins long before. Every second is greatness
Years after Doohan retired, I still believe he's been the best ever. Watching this guy ride was peak fun, all the time. Pitty what MotoGP has become 😞
Today is tame stuff by comparison. Traction Control was nonexistent then.
the young gen who claim Rossi or MM are the GOATS, clearly have no concept of how UTTERLY DOMINANT Doohan was , even AFTER he nearly lost his leg. !!!!!!
@@fredf9990 Damn! He had so much metal inside his body, I doubt he could ever go through TSA! Just imagining how much that should HURT and still seeing him winning makes you believe Aussies are actually made different!! 🙂
Crafar proving he was no joke back in the day.
Cold tires? Not a problem.
Cold and old 😄
That was epic.
The golden age of bike racing, Honda simply the BEST!!!
Sweet reaction from SC 🙂
