I’m a descendant! My ancestors left Bucks’s County, PA for Canada & settled in & around East Gwillimbury/Sharon, ON. They broke from the Quakers & built the Sharon Temple & were called The Children of Peace or Davidites. I had an uncle named Doan(e) & also passed that name down to one of my sons as a middle name.

Women did work, did own property, and did look after their children after divorce. Know your history, real history not the manufactured feminist version! Also the man voted on behalf of the household, wives have always held influence over husbands... Women could vote when head of the household. The vast majority of MEN did not have the right to vote until just a few years before women were granted the same. As the vote was reserved for the men of land owning families, the rich not thinking the general population wise enough to be allowed such power (protecting their self interest as a group).. now they just manipulate the process behind the scenes..... All this is ignored by feminism as it doesn't care about accuracy, only about creating a narrative of men vs women, men being 'opressors'. That's one wild conspiracy theory!

I’m a detectorist out of bucks county, PA who has been searching for artifacts from the Doan gang for the past year. I’m finally around an area known to have been a hideout for the gang. Bucks County is rich in historic significance. Unfortunately, in our contemporary culture children learn very little of the fascinating history of our beloved county. I have been on TH-cam several years but have discovered providentially The Mercer Museum channel. I have heard of Ann Chapman but until today knew nothing of her exploits. I am delighted to discover the gem of a video concerning Ann's life!

The story concerning the saddle is very interesting. But my attention was captivated by the painting to your right. Isn't that painting William T. Trego's painting titled "Rescue of the Colors"? My fascination with William Trego began when I first saw his beautiful painting "The March to Valley Forge" I recall seeing the painting poorly lit in a room of the museum at the Chapel at Valley Forge. Learning of Trego's physical handicap and his tragic death made his life more fascinating. William B. T. Trego, was born in Yardley, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1858. At the age of two, Trego's hand and feet were nearly paralyzed which was the result of polio or a doctor administering a does of caolmel - mercurous chloride.eventually he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he studied under Thomas Eakins. Trego didn't appreciate Eakins terse teaching style. Among his paintings is "The March to Valley Forge" which is among my favorite works by Trego. General W.W.H Davis commissioned Trego to paint “The Rescue of the Colors.” Trego worked on the painting for nearly a year. He intended to produce an accurate likeness of an historic moment which General Davis asked him to portray. There are several minute details which appear even in the background of actual soldiers and events that occurred at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia on May 31, 1862. In the foreground of the painting, Colonel Davis is clutching his wounded elbow but his attention is upon the rescue of the flag taking place in front of him. I understand there is an actual photograph of a model who posed for Trego at the Mercer Museum. There are three soldiers in the center foreground of the painting. Trego studied the battle and interviewed soldiers who participated in the engagement. William Trego emphasized the heavy losses that the regiment suffered during the battle. John Wanamaker paid the artist’s fee of four hundred dollars and gave the painting to the Bucks County Historical Society. The painting was unveiled in October of 1899. Tragically, it was buried in a back room in the court house where few people could appreciate the historical painting. William Trego is among my favorite artists born in Bucks County.

I've seen the collection of Iron stove plates and often wondered where they were manufactured? Do you know the identity of the manufacturer - the artisan or craftsman who designed the illustration on the plate? I assume that a furnace such as Hopewell or Durham would have created some mark on the plate to identify the object as their work. I assume that an artisan would do so as well. I have visited Hopewell Furnace several years ago. Hopewell Furnace is among the finest examples of rural American 19th Century Iron plantations. It was founded in 1771 by Iron-master Mark Bird and operated until 1883. I assume that an artisan would leave a mark somewhere on the plate identifying the piece has his workmanship. Were the stove plates cast at Hopewell? Durham Furnace began operation in 1727 precisely where a gristmill stands today. The mill was built in 1820 on the ruins of the furnace. A stove similar to the Franklin stove was produced in Durham. The 'Adam and Eve' stove was manufactured in 1741. George Tyler, a signer of the Declaration of Independence had a model of the "Adam and Eve" stove which bore the inscription "Durham Furnace 1774. I understand that the furnace provided General Washington with shot and shell during the War for independence. The original Furnace Corporation created in 1727 was intended to last fifty years. It was dissolved with the mutual consent of before the expiration date of the contractual agreement. Two new furnaces were built in 1848-50 - they continued to operate until 1874. Another furnace was put into blast in 1876. I am not certain when Durham furnace finally ceased operation. Perhaps it was with the introduction of the electric furnace and the birth of Bethlehem Steel. The electric furnace was introduced in 1890.

Perhaps what i have to say is mere folklore. As a young man, an older man with whom I became acquainted told me of men from New York, Upstate New Jersey, and New England traveling through Bedminster, PA on their way to California. They were on their way west to seek their fortune during the California gold rush of 1849. I was told that they were "touched" with gold fever. It was said of them that they had "seen the elephant." Whether or not this bit of trivial is true, I do not know. Regardless of the validity of the story, I've always found the name "Elephant Hotel" as a fascinating bit of advertising. I've always looked forward to seeing the sign whenever I visit Mercer Museum.
