Hey David, thanks for your question! It sounds like you’ve done a solid job so far with the preparation. When it comes to breathable bonding agents, there aren’t many pre-grit options that are fully breathable for external rendering. You’re right to be cautious about trapping moisture in, especially when dealing with rising damp. One alternative is to use a lime-based slurry or a lime wash, which can act as a breathable bonding layer without sealing in moisture. Lime is great because it allows the substrate to breathe while providing a good key for the scratch coat. Another option is just to stick with what you’ve done, skipping the pre-grit, especially if the test patch worked well. It’s often best to avoid anything that could potentially trap moisture, as you mentioned. Sounds like you’re on the right track, but feel free to ask if you’ve got any other questions. Good luck with the rest of the work! All the best, Dan
2 quick questions. How thick was scratch coat and top coat? Can you leave scratch to dry/cure and come back and do top coat?
Good questions. Each coat is approximately 8/10mm thick. You can absolutely leave the scratch coat to harden. I’d recommend getting the final coat on before the scratch coat has fully cured as this will help with the suction. If the scratch coat has been left to fully cure I’d recommend applying a primer over it to help with suction control. Let me know how it goes 👍🏼
Getting scratch coat on was a bit tricky in places as small parts started to come off or rough up. I then pressed mesh in and went over adding and scratched which felt more solid. I left for about 3 hours and was still slightly soft but top coat went on ok and I threw stones at it which stuck eventually. Background is I’m patching outside wall areas where pebble dash was blown and area where blown and rising damp. I’ve injected, tanked and used toupret anti damp render which is what I’m going onto now. The patch I’ve done was small test area. Question- is there a pre grit or bonder which is breathable which will help get base scratch coat on? I can’t see any and dont want to use something which traps water in. Or maybe I should just do as before no pre grit. Any advice v welcome! Thx
Mate stop cutting mesh with scissors its embarrassing
Good job mate.I wish you were here in France.
Thanks. What are you up to in France ?
You forgot to mention bonding before your first coat 2 coats of pva or a neat layer of sbr or if your flash with abit of cash blue grit 🤣
Why not.bed it on with sand and cement then fillet point it ? 😅
It's never a good idea to go over thermo plastic tiles, they have a nasty habit of failing under the latex , if you do decide to go over them primer is a must whether the product says you can go without or not , it's one of those, you'll find out the hard way eventually situations ,
It sounds like you’re having issues with inconsistent drying and curing, which is common when working with silicone-based renders, especially in varying conditions. Here are some things to consider: 1. Suction Control: Wetting the block before applying the scratch coat is the right move, but sometimes it’s not enough. The block may still absorb moisture unevenly. You might want to try using a stabilizing solution or bonding agent on the blocks before applying the render. This can help regulate suction more effectively than just water. 2. Mix Consistency: Double-check the mix consistency of the render in your machine. If the render is mixed too dry or too wet, it can lead to uneven application and drying. Make sure the render is coming out at the same consistency throughout the batch. 3. Application Speed: Machine-applied renders can sometimes go on too quickly. If you’re applying large areas before the previous sections have had time to start curing evenly, it can lead to some sections drying out faster than others. Try working in smaller areas and applying a more even thickness. 4. Weather Conditions: External factors like wind, direct sunlight, and temperature can really affect how render behaves. If the wall is in direct sunlight or exposed to wind, some areas will dry out much faster than others. Covering the wall with a tarp to provide shade or wind protection can help regulate drying time. 5. Floats and Sponge Timing: Timing is crucial when you start floating and sponging. If some parts of the render are setting faster than others, it might mean the render is not mixed properly or environmental factors are affecting different areas. Make sure you’re floating and sponging at the right stage of setting for the whole wall. If none of these methods work, you might want to reach out to Kilsaren’s technical support for specific advice, as they may have insights into their silicone-based products.
Damp bridging at it's finest😮
Hi Dan,what lime product are you using? Is it an NHL with sand?
It’s EWI Lime Render 3.5NHL. Very user friendly.
@@DanLee40 cheers looks a nice job 👍
@@DanLee40 how long did you need to leave scratch coat before top/floating coat to avoid cracking?
@@DanLee40 I'm using general purpose (GP) render from Kilsaren. We're doing a scratch coat on the block and then straight over for the finish coat with the same stuff. We're using a machine and screeding then using the spach to smooth it out. We then wait for it to pull in and do two floats and sponge. It's a nightmare to use and we aren't sure why. It dries out solid in places and is very wet in others. Have you used it and any advice? It's a silicone based render. We tried wetting the block today before we scratched and no help. 😅
@@neilrollason It’s essential to check that the scratch coat is firm but still breathable, meaning it should be set but not fully cured. A good rule of thumb is that it should not leave an imprint when gently pressed but should still feel slightly soft. Rushing the process increases the risk of cracks in the final coat, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.
Looks like a silicone render to me
😂
What you fucking about with that machine for? Use a float! You then do ont have to sponge it,can get rid of that floor cleaner and yiu get the traditional float finish.
Daniel how u get your plastering looking so pink and clean in your work
Labourer was classic 😂
Having recently redone our CSCS cards a can only apologise for my lack of PPE 😬 it’s all too easy to become too complacent when working on domestic jobs.
0:51 Hahaha The first thing I do is put on a mask, to save ingesting silica dust. After I started the job I stopped again and went and grabbed my safety specs, to sheild my eyes from dust particles. Id be like you, but luckily, I've been caught by site managers too many times & now I understand the value of my PPE But please carry on mate, I'm keen to learn some new techniques
😂quite right. Definitely use PPE. I do normally but I am a bit silly on occasion and do forget 😬🤦🏼♂️
@DanLee40 me too mate, that's why I had to go back & mask up
Looked like a dogs dinner to begin with. But looked clean at the end
Stop with the annoying music
Errm it hollows not hollers 🤪
Great effect, would love to see more of this!!....maybe next time choose a better music track 😉
Looks great. I am considering learning to do the venetian plastering myself. Could you recommend any training courses please.
I used a company called GoldTrowel . They are based in Essex. If you google polish plaster training courses it should pop up 👍🏼
@@DanLee40 Thanks for the quick reply. I know the place. I did the k rend course there years ago
Mint.
👍🏼thanks
Why is that on your nose😅 you ain't swimming
Yup, I dont give a shit
Tell me you cant render without telling me you cant render.
I done a 100ft cable 5 lift with no labourer and only a spoon to spread and got it done in one day
You can't paint silicone.. external painters mate would do a better job..
You can use silicone paint on silicone render. Which is what I did in this video.
@@DanLee40 yes. But, silicone sealant is not a mineral covering.. shit don't stick to silicone sealant. Mainly paint.
Sorry only what i see is that brilliant idea on that ladder 😂
😂it’s simple and effective 👍🏼
@@DanLee40 absolutely i have to do it also because i do not want to damage my facade again

Super tidy.
Thank you 😊
Is this a stand-up comedian or a cowboy??
Unfortunately that crack will just come back ,if the mesh didn’t stop it silicone paint won’t .I hate rendering 😂
Its cracked up the bead bead 😂😂 step away from rendering please mate if u think paint will fix that
Hi Dan. Loving the videos. What base coat did you use before putting the topcoat on ?
On this occasion I used EWI premium base coat.
Haha 😂 bit of paint in the crack, fair enough. Nice to know how it's deal with.
Is it optional to get it all over your face?
Stunning work guys. I'm guessing u put a tight coat over the initial topcoat just for any shrinkage. Might have to give ewi store a goo foe all the render Ie Silicone etc. I see u use alot of weber ocr also nice gear. I use alot of fassa ms20 ocr lovely stuff
Thanks for the tip. I might checkout that ms20 ocr 👍🏼
I would be more worried about the dodgy brickwork😢😢
Why?
Never seen anyone rule downwards 😂

Looks great!
Thanks!
Is Chris packham a roofer now?
No he's still an actor😊😊😊

Nice job well done
Thanks for the visit
Us old boys call that Bridging the Damp! Not a great idea.
I didn't even know I could render my bricks beneath my damp roof course. They are shabby too needing repointing 😢.
