An Adventure Above Wasdale — Alex Rambles
Back in the strange days of summer 2020, I set out on a solo adventure, Wainwright bagging and wild camping above beautiful Wasdale.
The day started with an ascent of Yewbarrow, perhaps the finest of all the smaller Wainwrights. After a scramble down Stirrup Crag, I headed across Red Pike to Scoat Fell and Steeple, before running across to Seatallan for huge sea views and Middle Fell. Time was too short to go for Buckbarrow.
Back by Wast Water, I picked up my camping gear and headed up to Whin Rigg, pitched the tent and warmed up some food. To finish the night, I set out for Illgill Head.
The morning broke beautifully but it wasn't long before the rain swept in. I still had the small matter of Buckbarrow's summit to go, which I bagged in horrendous conditions.
Wasdale, watched over by the Scafells and Great Gable, is one of the most scenic places in the Lake District. An adventure here is always a pleasure.

Scottish Winter - Alex Rambles

This film follows my five days of winter mountaineering around Lochaber during the London Mountaineering Club Winter Meet March 2022. On day one six of us climbed Ben Nevis via the Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête in pretty tough conditions. Day two saw six of us head for the classic Ring of Steall. As expected, the ridge traverses of An Garbhanach and the Devil's Ridge were superb, but it was the steep cl...

Chamonix is often described as the adventure capital of Europe. Set at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif and surrounded by huge peaks, it's an adventurer's paradise. Having practised our rope skills, on day two we headed for Voie Câli...
Suilven - Alex Rambles

Suilven in Assynt is one of Britain's most legendary mountains. It is a unique and idiosyncratic massif that rises from the stunning knock and lochan landscape like an ancient monster. In fact, such a description is often bandied about to the extent that it has become a cliche. But no other description quite does Suilven justice. A hike on Suilven is characterised by a long but delightful walk ...

The Cuillin of Skye are Britain's most technically challenging mountains. Great bastions of gabbro forged from the guts of an ancient volano, they form a darkly atmospheric mountaineering arena that is intimidating and awe inspiring in the same breath. The Southern Highlands suffer a great insult from a sign on the threshold of Rannoch Moor. It is whilst driving on the A82 past Bridge of Orchy that a sign greets motorists proclaiming “Welcome to the Highlands.” Yes, beyond this point the Highlands becomes truly wonderous, especially once that Buachaille comes into view and you dive into the jaws of the Pass of Glencoe. The Alps are the greatest mountains in Europe. These are big mountains, completely dwarfing the heights reached by the mountains on our shores here in the UK. I would never use my ice axe with the leash flailing around loosely as it could easily snag and cause a potential being wrenched out of your hands resulting in loss and/or striking a climber below. It’s a very silly thing to do from a safety perspective. You should either use it or take it off. Interesting video.

Lucky your bud didn’t catch a crampon on that tat hanging off the back of his harness. For anyone watching this, it’s a bad idea to glissade in crampons, it’s far too easy to end up catching a spike and going into a tumble. Even on an easy slope this can cause problems with so many sharp objects flying around. Better to take them off or walk down properly. Looks like you had a great day though and had great conditions!

I spent my childhood making these mountains my playground, from the age of 10 onwards Dad and I spent pretty much every school holiday in the Ogwen Valley mostly sleeping in our car or tent. I emigrated to Australia for 9yrs and sadly couldn't get back for the last days of his life, we had many phone calls in those last few days but I sent a letter by special delivery in the hope he'd get it in time. Hours before he passed he read my thanks for making me into the man I am today and teaching me that life is an adventure to be lived to its fullest, it finished with me telling him I'd one day look for him as I retrace our steps. Nothing is insurmountable if you have the determination and no matter how high those mountains first looked to me we always got up and back no worries in all weather's... I credit surviving my own stage 4 cancer 33yrs ago and the anxiety caused by my sons suicide in 2020 to the character building we did there and now I'm back in the UK I'm looking to move to North Wales very shortly, below the Gliders and above the Idwal Slabs there's a place called "The Nameless Cwm" unofficially over 40yrs ago we renamed The Ashley Cwn after me... Thank you for posting this wonderful video.
