What The Future Looks Like - UTOPIAN MINIMALISM
Ever wondered what the future will actually look like? Cyberpunk? Industrial? Utopian? In this video I want to delve into the vibes of the future. Specifically, I want to discuss "Utopian Minimalism" - an aesthetic category defined by clean, white minimalism and sleek architecture, with striking color-use and often some natural eco-friendly design elements.
In today's video, I go over instances of this aesthetic showing up in Mirror's Edge, Brink, Halo, Destiny, and other video game and movie franchises. My interactions with the ideas of The Venus Project sparked an interest in this design aesthetic for me when I was younger, and I always find it interesting to see elements of it showing up in media.
Enjoy!

What Is A 6th Generation Fighter - Anyway?
มุมมอง 4.1Kวันที่ผ่านมา
People have been freaking out about the 6th generation fighter jets that have been spotted flying around over China. In this episode we're going to take a look at some of the images of these 6th gen fighters and also define what the previous fighter jet generations even are anyway. Trying to define what a fighter jet generation even is is oddly tricky and nobody agrees exactly, so I'm looking f...

Following last weeks' episode where I ranted about artificial gravity via linear acceleration, this week I'll be talking about using rotating space stations to create artificial gravity instead. Specifically, I'll be going into the architectural decisions behind spin-gravity space stations, and what each different type of station will be useful for in the future. Have you ever wondered why every sci-fi movie justifies letting their characters walk around on their spaceships as if they're in full Earth gravity?... The picture we usually get of living and working in space is not particularly scientifically ac...

Last time I made a video about mechs I was trying to figure out if they were really feasible or not. Turns out a lot of you guys not only think they are, but told me they already exist and have fought. So today I'll be checking out the fight between MegaBots' Iron Glory and Eagle Prime robots against Suidobashi's Kuratas. Strap-in because this is about to be one of the things you've seen of all...

So there's this thing coming up. Not sure if you're aware of it - it's kinda niche - it's this concept called Christmas. The lore of Christmas is pretty peculiar. It's something to do with a middle-eastern Jewish lady in the year zero conjuring a baby without first having to engage in a bit of slap and tickle. One thing leads to another and the world ends up celebrating the kid's birthday for t...
Moon First. Then Mars.
มุมมอง 7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Are you a moon guy or a Mars guy? 'Cos I have some thoughts. A lot of folks think we shouldn't even bother colonizing Mars for a considerable amount of time, and should instead focus solely on the Moon - essentially since it would allow humanity to increase our off-world infrastructure to unprecedented heights, which will then make it vastly easier to colonize everywhere else. Today I'll be dis...
Could We Do Mechs IRL??
มุมมอง 87Kหลายเดือนก่อน
What do you think about mechs? I love mechs. I think everybody loves mechs. They're arguably, simultaneously the coolest and least practical concept of all time. I want to genuinely ask the question, the big question, truly one of the questions of all time: could we make mechs? Would they work? Would they be practical? Is there any conceivable scenario where they would be a smart move and not a...

There's a saying that goes: "LEO (Low Earth Orbit) is halfway to anywhere". I think that's a good saying. I'm of the opinion that the biggest obstacle to becoming a spacefaring civilization is just heaving things into space in the first place. But is the idea that LEO is halfway to anywhere really accurate? Let's find out! Solar System Delta-V map shown in the video: shorturl.at/aewZe Check out...

HOW TO DEFEAT SPACE - THE ROCKET EQUATION
New Atlantis From Starfield has a simular aesthetic.
I was bronze futurism (futuristic bronze age influence >:) ) "Humanity if blank" memes GoodYear Eagle 360 animation video where the vehicles looked the same with the same light strips and moved on the featured spherical wheels.
3:48 - I remember Brink! Never played it, but I remember seeing it on the telly, back when having the telly play in the background was a thing.
Found my people. I also used to have a thing for the Venus project as a kid 😅
Mirrors Edge-ism
Precious... Neofuturistic Greekø'Merican. You're welcome.
🔻 versus 🔺 i wonder which is more stable
Glad I came across this. A weird thing to be going through someones mind, but I'm constantly finding myself in love with this aesthetic but then muddled by the contradictions of human nature and real life urbanist ideas for sustainable progress. I built a Cities:Skylines project to this aesthetic encompassing the same principles if anyone reading is interested 👀
11:26 that white city from Guardians of the galaxy
My first thought was the super cities in Arcology: The City in the Image of Man, kind of surprised it wasn't mentioned here.
I suggest taking a look into Atcology. Perhaps a large dome structure that functions like a whole city.
You have to go to daraivi India to see the present day
Honestly I just prefer 2000s style future aesthetics and 90s style future
If I am correct, the 2000s style futurism is called Y2K [you need to SPECIFICALLY put 'Y2K aesthetic' and not just Y2K, because you will get digital apocalypse videos,] the other style [mostly used for digital interfaces] is called Frutiger Aero. They even have multiple buildings and interiors built in those styles, so look up "architecture."
To me "utopian minimalism" looks dystopian, soulless and depressing. Architects of the future should take inspiration from traditional styles and design buildings that blend into the picture of their surrounding and make it feel like home/a place worth visiting because it has character.
Same. I can't understand how any can think that this is anything but a picture of hell
I don't see people ever fully embracing minimalism, case in point most houses in the us are designed to look like a rural farmhouse. You would only be able to build these monolithic cities in the most oppressive society
But early medieval architecture is beautiful
Some days or weeks ago i scroll through Liminal Space pictures and then found videos of Fruitiger Aero 😮soo beautiful
Mirrors Edge is beautiful especially today in 2025 it look beautiful
Their is a chance, most hopeful sentence have heard in a while 😂😂
I almost knew about everything you talked about. I’m in love with this aesthetic but there’s barely anything still using this style anymore with the exception of Marathon (which I think is going to flop because everyone LOVES live-service extraction shooters). I have played both mirror’s edge games and MAN do I want more and I’m glad SOMEONE finally mentions TRON legacy it’s literally peak fiction plus its my favourite film so idk what to put here but I fricking love this long gone aesthetic.
Wait until he hears I like maximalist buildings. In all honesty, I'm not too fond of utopian minimalism. It comes off as boring without a lot of visual interest per building. As a whole, the structures are pretty, but they don't reall have a lot of individual character. There is rarely a time or place dimension to these structures, they could be built anywhere and occupied by anyone.
Maximalism: the Katamari Damacy of architecture lol. Nah that's fair, for real-world use you'd probably want to incorporate one or two cultural flourishes in the details just to ground them in a time and place - as you say. I appreciate minimalism just isn't everyone's vibe :)
I think what would be really cool is some sort of solarpunk, but with classical architecture. Intricate detailing on the houses, solar panels on the roofs, etc
I can't believe i just discovered another person that share the same utopian vision
Sidenote but i find it very funny how. Ching Chong = racist caricature of the chinese language Chong Ching = real name of a place
You picked Mirror's Edge? You realize that takes place in a dystopia, no?
Vekta City from Killzone Shadow Fall is another pretty good example for this architectural look! The pearly white monolithic buildings with darkened glass reflecting the world around it, flying cars, neon blue screens and lots of greenery sprinkled in!
I'm very anti-colonization and very pro-industrialization of celestial objects. Spin-gravity space habitats are far superior to surface colonies; to avoid radiation, surface colonies will largely be subterranean. The more independent actors there are in space, the more dangerous it is to live in a gravity well (including for Terra), so incidentally, the more space habitats there are, the more dangerous it is to not live in one.
The cheapest spin-gravity method is to tether two shuttles together, then the next cheapest method is to have a Stanford-torus structure, and the most expensive method is to have an O'Neill cylinder structure: twins, donuts, and sodas. I'd be surprised if efficient fusion isn't achieved within a few centuries, if not this century. Thing is, and I haven't heard anyone say this specifically, with modern tech we could have 1g acceleration and deceleration space travel using lasers / mirrors and light sails - we just need to setup the lasers / mirrors beforehand around the target destinations; what has been said, by Verner von Braun and The Orion Project, is that, with older-than-modern tech, we can use nuclear/hydrogen bombs are propellent for spacecraft - the main issue is obviously radiation, but space radiation is already a problem to contend with, by default (the ISS, being in LEO, is protected by the Earth's magnetic field; long-term missions to/on Luna and beyond will require heavy radiation shielding built into inhabited structures).
You sir… are hilarious 😂
Why is Vergil talking to me bro 😭😭💔💔
This one sparks joy.
Funny that allways someone metions the Felon never clarified, that the images the show u off it, are from the prototypes(T50) and not the actual Su57
You’re incorrect. The future is, in fact, self-built and high density. It kinda already is a significant part, but not the majority of urban space. The vast majority of the world population will live in urban slums like favelas, unless the worlds demography changes dramatically in the incoming years.
Look at star citizen. I think youll like some of the landing zones
Astrology is just pattern recognition and observing the effects of the environment on the human psyche. It's really not that far out there.
Reminded me of the new Salesforce train and bus station in San Francisco
I'm definately biased, but Halo's depctions of human cities (both reach and h2/h3odst) are by far my favorite future human aesthetics. That being said, I want to see people mix and match architectural styles in space habitats in particular. Give me catholic gothic stanford torus. Give me Americana O'Neil cylinders, or lunar bowl hab with ancient greek influence or something. You could get some really wild designs
My man, what's the ambience
considering human failure is pretty high, we'd be better off in a AI Utopia than humans managing stuff, just lay down get a drink, let the bots handle all the shit that humans do let the bots make your lunch, let the bots massage you, let the bots make movies and series especially tailored to your tastes, let the bots handle science and research, let the bots develop new technologies while humans sit back and relax, that sounds like paradise, doesn't it?
a couple other solid examples of this type of style could be star citizen's "New Babbage" and "orison" cities, with both of them beeng quite uniform in design language with a primarily white pallet. Although they do have most detail work (especially in the interiors), but this usually exists more to show the clean industrially made nature of the cities then just beeing decoration for decorations sake. Orison does lean a bit more in to the futuristic solarpunk with it's wide outdoor plaza's and parks. very nice video btw, great to see something else then "how can we bring back classical styles for the 100th time"
I’m down with the Utopian Minimalism Movement 😎🤖
I want future architecture to be Solarpunk. Integrated into nature, easily understood, efficient, and meant for human well being.
😂 you beat me to it!
Quirky girlfriends all the way!
The most practical and realistic mech use is likely something like Warhammer40k SpaceMarine Armor.
I think buildings of the future should be flexible. Monuments of today could become the burden of the future wich citys have to constantly plan around. So an building should be easy to recycle or to change into something that is needed.
The white space station looking moon bases are the coolest Also, Scotland's Real?!
My vision for the future is Aristocratic Communism - okay let me explain since it's from perspective of someone who lives in poland so i do see alot of communist architecture so let me explain. I want you to imagine the concrete prefab. then i want you to imagine the beaux arts style but prefabed now i want you to imagine the same style... mass manufactured in concrete big slabs. profit. that is what i WISH it happen but i know it wont. i call it "aristocratic communism" due to the fact lenin was an aristocrat - yes that's true - and because of soviet prefab style allowing to lower down cost of such architecture SIGNIFICANTLY.
Brutalism❤
I know the working idea for starship is "just stuff a bunch a people into them and send them straight to mars". But I hope once the thing actually starts flying they decide to build an Aldrin Cycler instead, just strap a bunch of starships together side to side and make a big loop with them(and these same starships can be sent up with all the necessary stuff to strap them all together, efficiency!) So the cycler can take a hundreds of people at a time, then just use the old "throw a bunch of starships at mars" approach for sending all the equipment the colonists will need. Tho im also in the camp of "probably just better to use starships to build an asteroid mining rig and get to one of the bigger near earth asteroids, send all the resources back to LEO, and start building better space habitats" The sooner we get to figuring out self sufficient large scale space habitats like O'neals, then its just the matter of stuffing one up with people, giving it a good push, and in a hundred or so years we've got our first interstellar colony.
Watch some videos with 2020s build houses in DPRK on some non-propaganda channels like DPRK-Explained. I think perfect match.
"My brain is a vibes based economy." This channel is going places. Just don't get to political either direction, and it will stay fun.
Counter: keep going like this and it will have to get political - and that's good: all art is political. Even this video is already political if you get into the ideologies of design language.
I disagree, politics are what defines societies, how we live and think. Despite not agreeing with a person's political opinion doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.
@KaiserV-2 i just hate when communists try to say capitalism is stifling human expression, and then try to homogonize everybody into they're "utopia". Then the right says "utopia is impossible". Like it's definitely not impossible. Both of you commenter's see politics as something like the "community discussion" and I see it as tribal conflict. We are one tribe, sometimes voting on where to go or what to do. But often politics devides the human tribe. That's why I was commenting that I like this guy's take. He hit it from both sides like a true enlightened centrist. Anyway I'm just using I different operating definition in this context
Lmao this video WAS POLITICAL. My god people have no media literacy
@@MidwitObservations politics have a lot of nuance, it's not a black and white issue. We'll probably stay divided for a long time. Many people have radically different views, as this comment section is a perfect example. Most ideologies can't definitively be better than others without having someone disagreeing.
Did you just describe Fruitiger aero? ... For architecture?
Honestly maybe lmao
