Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this passionate about this game in particular, as well as a couple of the other FF games in my case. However, this one truly stands out, and it's always been a toss-up between this one and 7 in terms of my favorite, but this one just feels so different and I have the most nostalgia for. Although, FF7 was actually my first FF game and it's what got me into the series. Right before FFVIII was released, I had gotten a hold of a demo disc where it starts you out on the first mission in Dollet (The title screen also had some music which was never officially released). Rinoa was in the party which was not the case in the full game and you also had access to Leviathan~ Something about the story and mesh of characters and the feeling of being a part of this special forces group in a high school atmosphere gave it so much more humor and character development than some of the more serious toned FF games. You spent more time and focus on reading the character's and their stories and relationships with each other, rather than just taking out the one big baddie. The side story and intertwining of Laguna and Squall and the dream world was also a game changer, as well as Seifer's ambitions and unmentioned love story with Rinoa. I would highly recommend anyone who likes this game to read the Final Fantasy VIII Novelization by UnholyCrusada. The author does an excellent job as to keeping true to the original story and dialog; albiet some changes, I would say they fix some issues that better translates into a novel and how things function in the world. It also digs deeper in character reflection and gives some perspective on what the characters might have been thinking and traversing some hidden meanings.

They sold me on the love story aspect. Which was OK. What sold me first was the music. Best OST. Then the Card and Junction systems grabbed me. I like abusing systems. The game that really grabbed me was FF9. So if you haven't played it, give it a shot.

Fragments of Memories and Drifting are my favourite themes from the game. The first makes me think of the happy times little Squall had with the only family he had left-his big sis. The second makes me think of when she disappears from his life, and he’s a little boy all alone in the world, constantly going to that door, not knowing why she’s gone, and waiting for his sis to come back. FYI, they actually called them “witches” in Japanese, but I think they localized it as “sorceress” in English because “witch” has a baggage of taboo.

Final fantasy 7, 8 and 9 hold very special part in my heart. When I play them it feels like being home again for some reason. Gives me a cosy comforting vibe.

This video brought me to tears, because FF8 is one of those games for me, too. That was a time when my dad was always either in hospitals or rehab, and I didn't have a mom. I only had my little brother, who I took care of like a mom would. He and I were both struggling to make sense of everything in life, and felt utterly abandoned by everyone in our entire family. We weren't allowed to go outside because we lived in a dangerous place. All we really had to do, without internet, cable TV, or friends, was our video games. FF8 was an escape for us. We played it over and over again so many times. And we related to Squall. Both of us. That scene where Squall is lost in his own mind while Ellone is being picked up by the White SeeDs from Garden had us both crying on each other. We imagined that we could go to Garden and be Squall's friends because we understood him. We were SeeDs, too. I love FF8, and Squall especially. That game got us through some super hard times, and I play it again every year starting on my little brother's birthday... He says he plays my all-time favorite game, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, starting on my birthday, too.

I feel you dude! FF VIII has a special place in my heart too. It has influenced in so many ways, that I can’t even describe it in a few sentences. So, I’ll tell you only this: I still remember how I beat the game for the 1st time in 2005 (I was 15 then). It was long after midnight, but I called my bf to tell him all about this (cuz it was his PS). I’m sure you know “the feel” after beating Ultemicia and watching that mind blowing, touching ending scenes. I had to share this immediately.

I also loved FF8 and its characters. When I was really young, I loved how honestly Squall would tell people off, when they annoyed him and I wished that I had the confidence to do that too. It was only years later that I realized that he actually didn't really want to be alone in the first place and was only defensive, as to not get hurt again, like in his childhood. Replaying the game again at that time, I almost felt embarrased on his behalf while playing the game. Seeing how emotional and conflicted he actually was and that I had mistaken that defensiveness for coolness. It took me even more years to understand the whole picture with the abandonment he had gone through and how it was indeed a showing of strength that he managed to successfully overcome his past and take so much responsibility in the story of the game, despite his burden. Even aside from that though, the game was great. It is such a fun twist, to take the school-like circumstances that children and adolescents know and turn them into something more interesting, by making it about military and globetrotting adventure. Essentially mixing what they find interesting with what is familiar to them.

Nice video. My game is either Sonic Adventure (DC version) or FFX. But I am a massive VIII fan too. ❤
