    No that’s a rare one because so tall. I don’t believe what you say about cast iron and downbearing, nor about wood “drying out”, as moisture within wood stabilizes before a piano is even sold. I would say, voice and shape the hammers, regulate, snug up keys, tune to 435. Your demo piece shows that the action has plenty repetition for anything. Repetition people make a big fuss but it’s really just about playing technique.

    And by doing that you are removing way too much of the protective layer in the top of the paint work... you can literally achieve what you are doing with a good compound rather than sanding to 1500 grit first which ends up being way way more damaging than compounding... don't forget... you do that with 1500 grit you can maybe do this twice in the piano's lifespan... but that is dependent very much on the manufacturers painting process and its depth. You should always use a depth gauge first before determining your sanding / compounding methods!! The marks you showed in your torch are simple swirl marks (the same kind you get on a car after washing)... a medium compound would remove these in about 30 seconds with the correct cutting pad and then a good polish afterwards will return the item back to perfect finish in about 1 minute.... you also wouldn't have the hazy finish you have in your final image shown... that is because you have not brought the polish right back up... please please... be nicer to paint work on pianos so they have a much longer lifespan and can be repaired more than just a couple of times in their lives!!!

      @NigelWare 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair points but this was only the key block. We had already done the exact process on the rest of the top case parts as there were far deeper scratches to remove. We have to gamble sometimes to not go through the finish, if we do then it’s a respray of that part.

    I've never heard of or seen this method before - it's certainly not mentioned in Reblitz; I've always managed with a sanding block. I'm not sure if I agree that re-shaping hammers using a sanding block (as per the standard method, again as described in Reblitz) in some way shortens the life of the hammer. That has not been my experience - though I am very careful as to the way I go about hammer re-facing. I've reshaped a lot of hammers during my 46 years working as a tuner/technician. Perhaps I'll attempt to use a sharp felt knife on sme worn hammers on some random piano - but I certainly won't risk experimenting with a customer's piano..!

    What a relief to hear this statement. I cannot understand this US-American philosophy of replacing soundboards in almost each and every case. It’s a barbarian approach and completely unthinkable in German-speaking part of Europe, where it’s done in extreme cases only.

    Ritmuller expresses emotion, sorrow and passion so easily it carries you leads you along with a fondness to let it .also little bit of Spanish even Egyptian zest. K500 more glassy more grand The more you listen your carried away slightly colder, not as lost and desperate in emotional passion as the rs but more conscious, more beautiful and pleasing sound to your soul.

    Thank you for your very informative demo. I have a Blüthner from 1934 and am in the process of regulating it. This demo was good for me as I can hear the same quality in the Blüthner you played. Now I'm satisfied that the mellow tone is correct for it. It's been fitted with brand new Abel hammers. Thank you again and I hope to hear more from you.

    I have a 1886 Knabe concert grand 7'5''. Original uncracked soundboard and the original ribs are all well attached. Yes the upper two octaves are not up to par with what I am sure a new soundbaord would give me but from the rest of the piano has tone that I consider to be as good as what a new soundboard would give me and has a tone I don't believe a new board would give me. . I agree with Mr Dorset: there is a magic in a piece of wood almost 140 years old. no way I would ever change it out.

    7:50 I disagree, I take it you've never heard of American piano companies Steinway & Sons or Mason and Hamlin? The American piano sound is more mellow than "big, loud, brash sounds." European pianos typically aren't "mellow" they are known for their "bell-like" tone, as they say. As per the article titled "Steinway: An American Story" on Steinway's own website, it states Henry E. Steinway "founded STEINWAY & SONS in New York City with the goal of building the best piano possible." This is in response to comment claiming it is a German brand (which for some reason YT isn't allowing me to respond to).

    Art Reblitz is still restoring pianos, and he does soundboard replacement these days. He posts on PianoWorld, you can ask him yourself. That book was published in 1976 when soundboard replacement wasn't really done except in factories under rare circumstances.

    Tonally I prefer the RS130. Very impressive for the money. I have a RS122 which is plently loud enough and that is in an 18 ft room so be wary about the size of piano for the room it is to go into. I have played the RS130 and it is loud, as to be expected for its size.

I have recently bought a 1945 Steinway M, with its original soundboard that remains in impeccable condition, and equipped with new hammers and strings. The instrument emanates a resplendent tonality imbued with a warm golden hue, a true testament to its timeless craftsmanship and enduring sonic excellence.

      I have a Yamaha U-3 upright grand in black.. what I dont like is the bass notes are way too muddy. If more than 2 notes are played... it has a very distorted muddy sound. My Yamaha U-3 has a much warmer sound, & clearer from what the U-3 or any piano's played had. Only muddy if played in a chord in the bass. And all the demo's are always Classical pieces. I play jazz, pop, rock, country, gospel, alternate... very little classical.

    • @absolutetuber
      @absolutetuber ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you regret getting the U3? We have whittled down our choices to the U3 or the K500. We like them both. Granted we aren’t professionals but my wife is incredibly proficient (she has a degree in music education and teaches piano) and I’m more of a late-intermediate, early advanced player. Either way, we will be able to get either one for around 12k and it’s probably going to be the last piano we buy.
