Your comment is so ridiculous, that it's laughable. Clapton from 90 to 2000 was at the pinnacle of his phenomenal career. His From the Cradle album and tours were some of, if not the best blues playing and vocals, ever laid down. His playing at the Dylan 30th concert at MSG brought the house down, with a 2 minute standing ovation. Steve Kropper and GE Smith looked at him in awe. On a night of superstar musicians, no one could touch him. His playing at his early to mid 2000s Crossroads concerts were on a level few could ever touch. That old Boring crap, iss a joke.

@@robmorrison1043People who say such things only based their opinions on records, which is fair, Clapton does sound very tame within the studio post Dominoes. But in live shows my god he is a completely different beast. His 90s-2010 era shows is something I listen to daily. 2001 in Budokan, 2004 Crossroads, 2006 in MSG, 2007 in Budokan, 2010 Crossroads. What a blues player honestly.

@@prathameshbhambureThank you for the lesson. You might agree or disagree on that art is subjective. If you enjoy Mr. Clapton's rendition, then good for you. I'm not telling you how to feel about it or that nobody is allowed to cover or change this song. Also it is not my place to teach you lessons based on your comments or opinions about a piece of music. You have a good day friend.

Clapton is good (not god). But to be very honest, this song he would have done better if tried to copy Gary instead of messing it up like that. This is the worse professional tribute to this masterpiece of the blues, and the fact that someone like Clapton did it make it worse.

Sam had these lyrics kicking around in his head for years/decades, but for some reason he couldn't explain to me just what he heard in his head for music or for instruments (e.g., he wanted horns in this song as with most all other songs by that time). What he tried "humming" to me sounded like a single-note horn blast followed by a "Born Under A Bad Sign" riff but with both an extra note and an extra beat to which I couldn't relate. So I came up with the idea of simply using that basic 3-string riff on counts/measures 1 and 2 followed by that basic 2-string riff on measures 3 and 4, and I suggested that just Kevin (on slide) and I open the song until we went to the 4 (I.e., to G from D) with just Bruce then joining in on piano. Then after the 1st 24 bars, have Ted (bass) and Zack (drums w/brushes) join in. Then Bruce's great down-low-on-the-keys piano v. slide guitar solo, then back to the basic arrangement and fade out (right after getting my one teeny licks in at the very end). Simple, Delta-like, simple as you can to express "that feel" and Sam's powerful voice. It was recorded after the horns packed up and everyone (including producer and engineer) thought the session/album was complete. It's my proudest music writing/arranging achievement with "The Mighty One," though I received no co-writing credit - which is fine. I couldn't believe it when Don's Tunes TH-cam post of this song hit the 50 million "views" mark before it was taken down, and I'm pleased to see how many others have since posted it.

I keep getting credited for the slide playing on this cut. I'm on rhythm guitar, but I will take credit for the on-the-spot (1-take) arrangement in the studio for Sam's lyrics. But that's Kevin Barry on slide . . . great slide work as are Bruce Katz's piano fills and solo. Zac Casher on drums (brushes) and Teddy B (Ted Bukowski) on bass. Mighty Sam McClain, lyrics/vocal; Bruce Katz, piano; Teddy B (Bukowski), bass; Zac Casher, drums; Kevin Barry, slide guitar; Peter Giftos, guitar, music and arrangement. Producer: Joe Harley. Engineer: Michael Ross. CD: “Sledgehammer Soul & Down Home Blues (AudioQuest)” recorded live at Clinton Recording Studio, NYC, 1996. NOTE: This TH-cam version is in the key of D, which is the key we recorded it in. For some reason, the version now with the most "views" was uploaded in C#.

I was stunned when I first saw this version on Austin City Limits. It is still In MYHO the best song I have ever heard. Blues Rock done as a Symphony . His chord structure is from another place altogether. And his soloing is so gripping it is hard to stop listening. We are blessed to have him in our world of music. The bass ,drums and keyboards are awesome. I believe this is the best that Eric and band has ever sounded. The rock solid timing of the drums and bass locking in hold you and do not let go. The keyboards fill is wonderful. WOW !
