Justin "Doesn't have his beard anymore" Morgan!
My beard makes my face itch… I honestly don’t know how I put up with it that year (probably peer pressure).
@@jdmcs i peer pressure you to grow a beard again!
I’ve recently received several suggestions on better ways to glue plastic pieces back onto the case. Unfortunately, I had already attempted to glue this case back together before receiving them. Because I’m not really happy with how the results turned out, I’m going to decline to admit to the products I used. However, not all of the faults lie with the glues I used - the plastic on this case is Spindler-plastic-level brittle (beige Mac owners will probably know what I’m talking about.)
hi Justin try using ess solo1 vogon driver cant link but google it :) (idk my other link got monetized or something) , these cards are head ache like IBM mwave dsp based very bad dos sound blaster combability , for IBM os combability look the list the have from pull down menu, vogons driver libary ftw , and loves Phill and site what he does some drivers there aren't right for all hardware.
I appreciate your work Justin. Thanks for leaving the live videos up. I usually "Listen" at work (I work for a sister company to Giant Food and Food Lion up in New York. I run a grocery Store night crew) and while I am working, Im listening. If I happen to be home during the stream, I'll usually be more interactive. The other night when this video was live I got bogged down cleaning up after Thanksgiving shopping.
Dang … missed the whole stream … got involved with a project at work …
That’s why I leave my VODs available, so that you can catch up as you are available!
No worries, that’s why I leave my VODs available!
Dev / QA test board?
Actually, as I’ve discovered since, this video card was designed to both save the CMOS settings of the host PC, as well as implement some rudimentary password protection to said PC.
@@jdmcs That's kind of cool. Thanks for the update.
Hey do you have to replace the battery can you just set the value every time?
I’m picking up a 8800ec tomorrow with an Emerson monitor keyboard printer and manual software etc. for 100 bucks is that a good price
Yes, that is a great price!
You will need to replace the clock module, or do the battery mod on it, in order to boot from anything other than MS-DOS in ROM. The BIOS in this computer resets the settings of it detects the battery is low/dead.
I’ve been searching for my childhood pc which was an Emerson xt with 2 5.25 drives and no hard drive. It was purchased from either home shopping club or qvc😂. I wonder if this is it, I’m looking to see the case then I could tell. Any ideas on places that may have Emerson’s for sale?
I don’t see them come up for sale very often, but I have a saved search on eBay that occasionally finds a new one listed. Marketplace may be another option, but since Emerson was just one of many brands found in department stores, I’d occasionally try generic searches in case someone doesn’t bother to mention the brand.
I missed the live stream …
That’s why I always leave my VODs up!
replace dallas17887-5
This module should work to replace DS12887 modules. However, it isn’t compatible with the DS17887-5.
Hello Justin, nice video again. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
Thanks!
Hi Justin, what a nice channel. I have subscribe it. I like your content. I repair motherboards and computers too for my customers. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
Hahahaha!
Hi, where did you buy the charging board and the IC to be able to put a 2032 battery without charging? Lastly, could an Intel DX4 100 Mhz be configured on the ExpertBoard without a voltage regulator? I have the same one as in the video, but the first version that comes with resistors that are not SMD type.
You can download the gerber files from here and have them made at your favorite PCB manufacturer: github.com/wiretap-retro/Not-A-Varta-CR2032 The IC I bought from here: www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Analog-Devices-Maxim-Integrated/MAX40200AUK%2BT
Your EXP4044 probably won't support a DX4. The Retro Web mentions that some are missing the voltage regulator required for the DX4, and yours sounds like one of them: theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/dataexpert-exp4044 You might want to check out Scrap Computing's Socket Blaster project: github.com/scrapcomputing/486SocketBlaster
I almost never see references to KLH computers. My family's first IBM compatible was a KLH 386 SX-20 which we bought at Sam's Club in 1990 or 1991. I still have it. Been meaning to get it up and running but it still looks really good inside. No longer have the drives. I did get one of those Ti 486SLC chips but haven't decided whether to install it. Probably not. I think it would limit the ability to play early PC games. Too powerful. I have an Am486 DX4-120 anyway. Your KLH is distinctly different from mine which suggests they were simply selling white label PCs. It also has WDC onboard graphics.
Do NOT let this man get ahold of a Fire Flower.
@Mac84 sent me!
can't believe i missed this live lol
I have some upgrades planned for this system to make use of the switches that were probably for a multi-cart adapter… as well as fixing the broken chroma luma audio mod.
By the way, I've submitted the info to The Retro Web on this board, and they've updated the page we found with the info on this board: theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/unknown-386sx-16-system
I was there with my daughter and gave you that Cartel case. Just wanted to say the PSU works great, I ran it for hours on a meter and it was steady the whole time, it should be perfectly safe to use.
Thanks for the cool case! I have a few ideas for proper motherboard/CPU combos for the Cartel case, so stay tuned!
I had to leave for work by the time you got the Sun's out. I said "I told myself I wasn't going to buy much, I am not breaking that promise" or something to that effect.
The title mentions a recap but when you speak you mention it’s had an ultrasonic clean and there’s no electrolyte residue. So, was it recapped or just cleaned? Also, did you recap the power supply also? I’m only asking because I refurbished my LCIII digital board and power supply board. I recapped them, then washed them, then dried them and finally placed them in a warm environment to drive out the remaining moisture over 24 hours.
The logic board was recapped first, and then ultrasonically cleaned to get rid of any remaining electrolyte and flux residue. I also recapped the power supply. (I don’t remember if I then ultrasonically cleaned the board from the power supply. I may have just used IPA under the capacitors as I removed them.) After ultrasonic cleaning, I always rinse with distilled water and then dry the board. For LC series boards, I use my reflow oven to heat the board to 50-60C for 60-90 minutes.
Love the wheel of regrets
I have to give credit to JVHS, he surprised me with the animation!
Just a quick update on the “tested working” Apple II+ motherboard I bought on eBay: it actually had a falling 9334 on it… 🤦♂️ The chip worked well enough for BASIC; I discovered that the failure by running Adrian Black’s Dead Test on it, which failed with all the bits of the zero page repaired as bad.
The fact that someone had previously labeled that that was in fact the power supply though
I do apologize for anyone that thought I was ignoring them in the chat. The chat in OBS froze around the time the chat rate normally goes down, so I didn't catch the issue before I ended the stream. I'll try to do better next time.
I feel asleep right before the hard drive surgery. The floppy drive will likely need a recap as well. There are 4 caps total. The SMD caps on the board need to be replaced. I’ve been working on an adapter for the hard drive, but I stopped that in February when everything went south.
Know of a source for the belt? Because there’s probably no need to recap the floppy drive without one, as it was completely disintegrated.
@@jdmcs I will send it as soon as I find it.
One of these day's I will surprise you and watch live, but feel free to refer to Dad as Johnny Anonymous. (LOL)
Could you tell me how to make an order of this board? Which folder in github consists right gerber files? In picogus/hw/jlcpcb I can see only project.db file...
It looks like an issue was found with the v1.1.1 hardware, and an update is forthcoming. That’s probably why the gerber files are presently missing. Watch the main project page for updates: github.com/polpo/picogus Note that I’m not affiliated with this project, so I don’t have any insight as to when files for v1.2 of the hardware will be available.
Those are some really unusual features for a VGA card.
There is a little blurb in infoworld (Mar 11, 1991). "PH6 Technology Corp.'s Super Intelligent VGA controller, which features automatic systems configuration backup and password protection, is now shipping. The 16-bit board with 256k of memory lists for $245.
Nice. I took a picture of a rainbow once, and it landed on a chicken fast food restaurant in Australia... rainbows don't lie.
I was going to say a box of Trident Cards....
what liquid do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner? I've been looking for something to clean PCBs with but everything I've seen is over 100 bucks.
I use Elma Tec Clean A1 which, unfortunately, is currently $99 for the 2.5 liter bottle on Amazon…
@@jdmcs ahh crap. Is it worth it?
Nice work and these look like a great replacement. In 2024 the 12887+ is still manufactured. Maxim bought Dallas 20 or so years ago and in 2020 Maxim was acquired by Analog Devices. You can find them on Mouser and Digi-key. Personally, I like the DIY replacements better but for those that want a OEM replacement then you can still get them.
I should have double-checked before I released the video. I thought I had seen that the part was discontinued by the manufacturer back in 2020, but at that time, I wasn’t aware that Maxim was being acquired by Analog Devices. In all likelihood, I misread/misheard something and thought they were permanently discontinued. Though I have at least one motherboard that isn’t compatible with the 12887+ or even this Necroware module. Luckily I had a GlitchWorks module based on the 12885 (no plus) which it is OK with.
How do I find it on their web-site, it doesn't look like simply searching for Dallas DS1287 RTC or anything similar works. Looks like you need a part number.
@@uniktbrukernavn the current part still in production is the DS12887: www.analog.com/en/products/ds12887.html
@@jdmcs Fantastic! I'll look into buying one, hope they ship to Norway. I'll probably still try to modify my own just to see if I can do it. My father did buy me a soldering iron many-many years ago, it should be like riding a bike 😎 Thanks for providing a URL.
If you're wondering, we stayed at the Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Sorry I missed the stream. I was at a concert... and drove through a snowstorm to get back from said concert.
I don’t have “April snow” on my bingo card… Hope you enjoyed the concert!
Yeah sometimes they are brittle I had to deal with a apple Bandai pippin recently horrible machine to take a part because of the ribbon cable system just to remove the bomb battery out of it so it doesn't leak or kill the board 3 1/2 hours later finally get it together and snap went the clip on the side panel gave me a heart attack. Until I noticed it wasn't needed
Yeah, these older Apple computers are getting more brittle every day...
it came with 2 massively thick but not full page size emerson branded binders, one for the included software and the other hardware. ours came with an okidata dot matrix printer that was massive! i wonder if i was booting from a dos 5.25 floppy for no reason! lol i cant wait to find one of these and max it out as much as possible, hopefully using a rasberry pi as both a gpu and coprocessor but that may be wishful thinking lol there have to be upgrade cards like those made by sonnet that will work in this! anyone know a goodplace besides ebay/facebook to look for this pc?
This PC seems to be rare on all marketplaces these days, so I can’t recommend one over the others.
We bought one of these xt clones through qvc! Ive been searching for one because i lost mine in a house fire, my dad had purchased it right before he was paralyzed in an accident and later passed so it means alot to me but i never see them around!
When I do find one of these for sale, I want to max it out as much as possible. Is there any sites where I can read the best possible upgrades this board can handle? I’m talking about the motherboard that you have. Can that processor be upgraded? What type of coprocessor and video card can it use? How would I hook up drives when I need to get an IDe card? This has me all amped up. I have to find one of these! Mine did not have a hard drive on it, but I will get one of those compact flash card slots when I get one of these! I want to put the best video card and sound card that I can handle into it and I’d like to try to find out if there’s a way to upgrade the ram as well. Thanks for the most awesome video I ever seen on TH-cam!
You had to load ms dos first every time you started it to do anything! 😂
The processor the Emerson 8000EC isn’t socketed, so you’re not going to be able to upgrade any better past the 10MHz Intel 8088. I already tried and failed at replacing the 8088 with a V20 only to realize the BIOS has locked that upgraded that upgrade path out. You’re beat bet is to pick the best four 8-bit expansion cards out that don’t overlap with on-board functionality.
FYI: The theme from “The Curse of Monkey Island” will result in a Composition Match (not a strike, but it does affect monetization of the video); therefore, I have muted the claimed segments of this livestream. This also means that “The Secret of Monkey Island” isn’t safe for TH-cam videos, so I’ll have to find another game for demonstrating certain sound cards…
Q: Why isn't this computer wearing your cap in the thumbnail? A: It's not my computer. Q: If only your computers wear your cap, why is Jeramy's Apple IIc wearing a cap in a previous thumbnail? A: I hadn't made the decision then that only my complete computers would wear the cap. I may eventually re-do the thumbnail to match current capping standards... but that's lower on my to-do list.
I believe I kept mixing up the Crystal Flex 370 BX and the Crystal Flex 370 GX during the stream, as both single-board computers look the same. I believe that I have the Crystal Flex 370 BX as this board has the Intel 440BX chipset, whereas the Crystal Flex 370 GX has the Intel 440GX chipset. That being said, if you find a manual for either model of SBC, please let me know!
2 years later... The 8000 series did not have the speech chip in it. Only the 286 and up did. Bought this computer at Wal-Mart in about 1990-ish, on sale for $425 and it came with the Emerson CGA color monitor. This is a fast little XT class machine. I was always impressed as to what games it could play. I eventually upgraded the "A" Drive to a 1.44mb 3.5" floppy and added a Sound FX sound card. Then Added a Video 7 CEGA card, which gave me 16 colors on that Emerson CGA monitor. Played a ton of Sierra games on this thing, all the way up to Space Quest V. It was quite the capable little XT machine. If I remember correctly, you could load TSR's in the upper 128k of the 768K and free up almost all of your base 640K for games. CTRL + ALT + ESC gets you into the BIOS setup. Just for those reading the comments years later. If you do end up with either the 286 or 386 version, make sure the BIOS is not password locked. It's impossible to clear the password by simply removing the battery and there doesn't seem to be a clear CMOS jumper.
I can't believe i missed this one
I added chapters to this stream to help you and others watch it later…
Justin, that Quadra 700 motherboard came from one of my machinist buddies, an 85 year old guy, in Falls Church VA. I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it.
I have a case on the way for it, so I’ll be able to make good use of it!
@@jdmcs Cool!
If anyone is curious, the seller did require me to return this motherboard, so I'll have to find another FX-3000 or similar motherboard for future 3/486 shenanigans.
I have the Emerson 500EC’s cousin, a Scott 2000SC12. I couldn’t find information about it specifically, but I saw the same ad you showed in a video about the Emerson and started looking for information about it. It has the same digitized voice that I remember from the Scott. Mine has an Oak video card with an FCC ID: IEW-OAK-VGA-16 and a sticker with M900523641-800 on it. It also has a Dallas DS1287 and I’m trying to decide weather to mod it or replace with the Necroware or Glitchworks chip. I saw your warning about the Necroware not working on the 12887. I’m inclined to try the mod first. It has a Western Digital hard drive (type 17) that I won’t be able to test until CMOS settings can be saved. Both the drive and video cards seem to be original to the computer. The only upgrade may be an extra meg of memory. Have you figured out since posting this video that your CF IDE issue is due to the non-standard IDE controller? I was considering a custom ribbon cable with the appropriate pins swapped in order to allow the CF cards I use to be portable. Looking forward to following your progress, and your work so far has helped me with mine. Finding someone else who worked with a similar machine and tracked down the Emerson software has given me confidence to go ahead and purchase the Scott (which happened to be my first ever PC back in 1992). So, depending how it goes from here, you’ll either share in the credit or the blame. 😄
I thought the IDE issues were yet another layer of the “security” features of this computer… The high byte signals being reversed on the board, never would have guessed that! I do need to build another Necroware module, just as soon as I find the parts I’ve misplaced, and I’ll go back and see if this computer has issues with the Necroware module, or if I was actually having issues with the last module I built.
Number 7 is my favourite on this video, as 24 Minutes in Justin has gone chipmunk mode! its a great recap of an insane year of eBay regret!, really enjoyed watching this! and no1! of course!
Glad you enjoyed it!
