Soil Testing & Amending Strawberry Plants
Soil Testing and Amending Everbearing Strawberries in North Texas:
🕒 Timestamps:

00:10 - Why I grow Strawberries
00:31 - Strawberry pH / Dormancy
01:32 - Collecting Soil Sample/ pH Testing
02:29 - The Importance of Soil Testing
03:12 - pH Testing Results
04:57 - Conclusion/ Recommendation
Timing: For everbearing varieties, plant in early spring (late February to March) in north Texas. This allows them to establish before the main growing season.
Everbearing varieties suitable for north Texas:
Ozark Beauty
Quinault
Fort Laramie
Eversweet
Micro-climate considerations:
Utilize slightly shaded areas to protect plants from intense afternoon sun.
Consider using row covers or shade cloth during peak summer heat.
Plant near structures or large plants that can provide some shelter from harsh weather.
Sun exposure: Aim for 6-8 hours of sunlight, preferring morning sun and afternoon shade in your micro-climate.
Watering: Consistent moisture is crucial. In your micro-climate, you may need to water more frequently during hot periods. Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses for efficient watering.
Fruiting pattern: Expect several harvests throughout the growing season, typically with peaks in late spring and early fall.
Soil Preparation with Azalea Soil Blend:
Soil testing: Test your soil pH and nutrient levels before amending.
Timing: Prepare soil a few weeks before planting in late winter or very early spring.
Using azalea soil blend:
Mix the azalea soil blend with your native soil at a 1:1 ratio.
Work it into the top 6-8 inches of soil thoroughly.
Application method:
Spread the azalea soil blend evenly over your planting area.
Incorporate it well into the existing soil.
Water thoroughly to help settle the amended soil.
Raised beds: Consider creating raised beds of 8-10 inches for better drainage and soil warming in spring.
Mulching: After planting, apply an acidic mulch like pine needles or pine bark to help maintain soil pH and moisture.
Ongoing soil management:
Monitor soil pH throughout the growing season.
Top-dress with additional azalea soil blend or compost as needed, especially after the first fruiting period.
Fertilization: Use a balanced, acidic fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Apply lightly after each fruiting cycle to support continuous production.
Micro-climate-specific tips:
Wind protection: If your micro-climate experiences strong winds, consider using windbreaks to protect plants.
Temperature fluctuations: Be prepared to protect plants from late frosts in spring and early frosts in fall, as everbearing varieties will be actively growing and fruiting for a longer period.
Summer heat management: During intense summer heat, increase watering frequency and consider temporary shade structures to prevent heat stress.
By using everbearing strawberries and tailoring your approach to your specific micro-climate in north Texas, you can enjoy fresh strawberries for a more extended period. The azalea soil blend will help maintain the acidic conditions these plants prefer, supporting healthy growth and fruit production throughout the season.

    I'm a new subscriber! I found you on Insta and thought I'd follow on TH-cam as well! Question about growing garlic. Is it okay to grow it in a pot? Also, is it okay to grow it in the same pot as lettuce? For context: I live in the hardiness zone 8a of North Carolina. Fall begins in 2 weeks. I live in an apartment, so all of my gardening has to be in pots, either on my balcony or inside. 🙂 I'm soooo enjoying your content! Thanks for sharing!

    • @urbangardeningwithgray
      @urbangardeningwithgray หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your support! I very much appreciate it! As for your question, given your space limitations yes you can grow both lettuce and garlic in pots. But in the same pot may be more of a challenge. First, They have different growing seasons. Lettuce likes cool weather (spring/fall), while garlic is planted in fall for summer harvest. Additionally, they have different water needs. Lettuce wants consistent moisture, but garlic prefers drier conditions. Plus they require the same nutrients so they may compete with one another. Also, they both have root systems that may make space limited stunting their overall growth. It’s ambitious to try, but you may be better separating these too, they would be like roommates that have different work schedules. Let me know what you ultimately decide.

      Start with a tomato plant as your centerpiece, then nestle some bell peppers about 12-18 inches away. Tuck in some basil plants around 6-8 inches from both the tomato and peppers. Let me know if this helps! Happy gardening!

    • @urbangardeningwithgray
      @urbangardeningwithgray หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am planning on keeping mine in pots for at least the first two years and possibly transplanting in the ground after I get a strong enough root system. From there I will try to keep it pruned pretty regularly as well. Because when winter comes it is going to have to be covered in plastic and deeply mulched near the roots to protect it, just like you are doing. So we are on the same track!

      I am sorry for the delay. But I purchased the mother plant a last year at a local nursery. It was maybe 5 inches when o purchased her. She then started spawning croms or shoots just this year. I am so excited. And yes you are correct, bananas do extremely well in central Florida. My friend @andrethefarmer has a bunch of bananas growing at his home, and he is in central Florida as well. This was awesome! And such great advice at the end! Trees are not for instant gratification and some trees are a delay more than others for example with avocados. They take up to 13 years to produce fruit and you won’t even know how good they are until after 12 years!!!! When you graft a baby tree with a more mature one you can cut down on the developing time for fruit. But sure you already know this. 😊❤God bless you and just subbed to your channel!

      This is what we need to do asap to save a sun-scorched pothos plant: 1. Move it to shade immediately to prevent further damage. 2. Remove damaged leaves, as they won't recover. 3. Water thoroughly but don't overwater. Ensure good drainage. 4. Increase humidity by misting or using a pebble tray. 5. Avoid fertilizing until the plant shows signs of recovery. 6. Gradually reintroduce to brighter light once it recovers. Keep me posted on your progress and I will continue to help and see if we can save her.

    How do I get rid of spider mites when the temps are in the high 90s 100s? I have 40%shade cloth but neem says not to spray over 85.

    • @urbangardeningwithgray
      @urbangardeningwithgray 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To combat spider mites in temperatures exceeding 90°F (32°C), consider the following strategies: 1. Hydro-pressure treatment: Apply a strong water spray to dislodge mites from plant surfaces. 2. Neem oil application: Utilize a solution of 2 teaspoons neem oil per quart of water, with a small amount of mild soap as an emulsifier. Apply thoroughly to both sides of leaves. 3. Insecticidal soap: Apply a commercial or homemade insecticidal soap solution. 4. Selective pruning: Remove heavily infested plant sections to prevent further spread. 5. Humidity management: Increase ambient moisture through regular misting, as spider mites prefer dry conditions. 6. Biological control: Introduce natural predators such as predatory mites or ladybugs. 7. Diatomaceous earth: Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth as a physical barrier. 8. Plant health optimization: Ensure proper watering and nutrition to increase plant resilience. 9. Quarantine procedures: Isolate and treat new plants before introducing them to your main growing area. For optimal results, implement an integrated pest management approach combining multiple methods. Let me know what works best for you. Or if you need any additional help.

    Thank you. They took you out of my feed for a while. 😐 Is there truth and strong reason to get a grafted tree rather than growing them naturally? I hope to be able to get some fruit trees next spring. 🤞 I know there will be the advantage of age with one from a nursery but have always questioned the process.

    • @urbangardeningwithgray
      @urbangardeningwithgray 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for finding me again. Yes unfortunately TH-cam will turn off notifications randomly. Although, to answer your question, Grafted fruit trees have several advantages: - Earlier fruit production - Predictable traits (fruit quality, tree size) - Improved disease resistance - Size control through dwarfing rootstocks - Possibility of multiple varieties on one tree - Better soil adaptation While growing from seed is rewarding, it's less predictable and slower to fruit. Grafting is a time-tested, beneficial practice used by many arborists and tree farmers alike, despite seeming unnatural. Consider your goals, space, and patience when deciding between grafted and seed-grown trees. Let me know if this helps or if you need me to go into greater detail.

      What issues are you having, are they germinating?

      @@urbangardeningwithgray I used a whole packet of seeds to get one to germinate and live long enough to get big enough to move outside. That was 2 years ago. We were having a drought. I think I loved it to death. Prob over watered. Haven’t tried again.

      In 2-3 months outside it never got more than 7” tall. Then it died. It was in a grow bag.
