The Hope Culture with Shirley Shani Ben Zvi, LAMFT
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 พ.ค. 2023
Welcome! The Hope Culture is all about using pop culture to to talk about grief and mental health. Grief doesn't have to be death, and mental health doesn't have to be illness ; more often than not, it's just life, right? So, let's talk about it.
I am Shirley Shani Ben Zvi; I'm a couples and family therapist and on this channel, I'm discussing mental health, therapy, grief, and how they are portrayed in popular culture. I am all about hope, so I'll do my best to show the good, authentic portrayals.
I truly prefer discussions over monologues, so please drop a line, express yourselves, and let's connect :-)

A Therapist Guide to Hope
มุมมอง 15หลายเดือนก่อน
This is not the video I planned for today. But after seeing the results of this election, and knowing so many people grieve, I wanted to put out this reminder of HOPE. We hoped (I hoped) for a better USA, but a Harris presidency was the pathway, not the hope itself. So hold on to that hope. Hope is not a naive emotion but a powerful catalyst for change. My perspective challenges the notion that...

In this video, we dive into the attempt to apply the 15-minute technique to grief: setting a timer, playing a sad song, and giving yourself the space to fully feel grief before moving on with your day. Tips for holidays’ grief from Kara and Alex Danvers

Protect your children. Even if they're adopted!
Rebecca knew that being adopted complicated things for Randel. She did what she had to.
Stating the obvious, but I love that the older man found purpose through loss, but did not say his child died for that purpose.
Thank you, yes. He makes sure to just share his experience or meaning, not a vague all-knowing stance on the world.
Love the example. Grief is such a sensitive, confusing experience. I bet so many of us don't know what to say and just repeat what we've heard. And it can be invalidating. Thank you for supporting the community with a difficult topic!
Thank you! I do my best. This is the second of what will become a few-videos’ series… please let me know what can be helpful to cover 💜
When I was watching that scene I literally screamed and then rolled on the floor squeaking!!❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
This is what i needed today thankyou
Glad you found what you needed

Thank you so much for sharing this. This is a beautiful metaphor for grief. Especially the part about the ball hitting the wall. Because sometimes, even a long time later, it can hit in a way that feels like fresh pain all over again. But knowing that is normal makes it a little more bearable.
Thank you, I am happy it helped. When the ball hit the walls of the jar, be compassionate with yourself and remember it’ll go back to place. I’m also happy they represented it so well in this show, because representation matters!
How can you say hope is always present when you work with people with suicidal ideation? Isn’t wanting to die a sign of hopelessness?
Just changed tomorrow’s video to answer this question. Stay tuned…
WHAT THE HELL GUYS 😂😂😂
What’s the question?
Loving this idea. Keep sharing these videos and inspiration~ We CAN use our fandoms to be our own heroes!
Thank you! This means the world to me! Please feel free to share…
Shirley, I always wondered why my mother was angry. Loss, it was about loss and her inability to control anything in her early life. As a child of the Great Depression she lost her mother, her father abandoned her. Raised by her maternal family she wasn't allowed to graduate high school, but had to begin working to help support the family. All of this caused her in later years to be angry. It's been amazing to follow along watching The Way Home, but at times painful because Del's reactions with Kat(also a Katherine) mirror those of my mother. When Del loudly says "Katherine" I hear my own mother, and now I know why she did this! I will be following along this next season for more of your insights! Katz
She never got the chance to be her, who she wanted to be. She never got a chance to choose. I’d be mad, too.
Such a beautiful moment, all was perfect and so tender... Oliver was so nervous and Lou too, it seemed so real. 🤗
It was very well done
I love this movie. One of Sally Fields best roles for me. I have seen this movie so many times.
I love it, too. I knew I’d analyze it at some point… the full video includes more scenes from other shows

Just because someone is different, it doesn't mean that they're bad. Everyone is different. To actually find someone bad, you need to find the consequences of their actions first. And only then can you tell.
Indeed.

I would encourage you to learn first and comments after. But also if this is hard and you can handle it, you really are welcomed to leave this space. What you’re not welcomed to do, is spread lies and hate on my page.
This has always been one of my biggest problems with certain church goers. People cherry picking bible quotes to confirm their own views while ignoring every other quote in the book that contradicts it. Also, those that scream the book is the word of God while forgetting it's been edited by man for a couple millenia, usually for the same reasons as my first point.
If it’s any consolation, it’s been a problem with every religion… 😉
The Word of God is the Word. It is the Final Word. It is a two-edged sword, telling both the blessings and the curses. How any person "feels" about it does not change its Truth. The Word is the Word. Our opinions do not matter.
@wisewoman7906 which of the words on which of the religions? There are many contradictions….
No. But GOD can.
My ultra religious friends like to say: far be it from us to do God’s math… In other words: not for us to judge God’s creations, nor is it for us speak for them. Btw: watch the full video. Maybe you’ll learn something new 😊 Happy pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Your religious beliefs don't apply to everybody
I’m agnostic if you refer to me - that’s why I quote others when it comes to religion. Although, I could probably give anyone a run for their money when it comes to the Torah.

@gutterpunk4203 thank you!
Rebecca rightly called out her mother's racism towards Randall because she always loved her son. Mother of the year material right there!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Indeed! This is one of my favorite tv-mom moments!
I've been asked this question before and found it to be confusing and hurtful. I'm glad you are not only talking about this, but offering better suggestions of what to say.
Thank you. I think we sometimes don’t even hear ourselves… just ask out of habit. So I don’t want to scold people, just offer a different POV 💜
Wanted to also add, that I’m not sure how much choice people have in who they are…
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I wonder how we can leverage youtube to be a place where dialogue happens beyond comments and replies.
