I’m watching this on my tv and had to pop onto my phone. From one reactive owner to another you are doing well. I have had dumb blank out moments where the leash drops, I leave the car door open etc. I’d recommend leaving the muzzle on till he’s in the car. Also as soon as I get to the trail entrance I throw on a 6 foot leash with a built in traffic handle. You can also get custom 8 foot solid leashes with built in traffic handles. Also while on the trail take the time to do reps of obedience training. Just basic check ins and heal work. Even to settle him in the beginning doing the basic reps can really help having a calm entrance with his mind already focused. For me I do basic reps with my boy an hour a day. It’s tough but keep it fun. Please for both your sanity and being able to be prepared always check reviews on trails and see how many off leash dogs are noted or the most busy times of the day. Also he’s a shepherd, look into breed specific outlets. As an example barn hunts, flirt poles even bite work. Not for protection but to have an outlet and create confidence. I’d suggest going to a trainer for that and learning as well. I wish you the absolute best on your journey with him dude, you are doing good. It’s taken me 4 years to work through things with my boy and consistently have fulfilling walks for the both of us. Sometimes though my boy has bad days but he comes back from the spicy moments much faster. It will get better please trust in that process.
