🟢Mail time 67 - another great, but flawed, Filofax personal organiser.
I call this a "Marmite" organiser. You either love it, or hate it.
It has, like just about every other "Guilford", the problem of peeling "leather".
But it was cheap and, once I've spent time removing all the peeling, I'll have a really useful organiser with, (and this is crucial for me when choosing a model from the Filofax brand) good flatability.

Many leather items don’t have a leather smell. It’s modern tanning methods, sadly.
Very true!
That looks like a fake Filofax not genuine
Thank you for your feedback.
I like to get deatramentis archival inks because they are waterproof. I like to sketch and watercolor so the deatramentis archival works for that. The Noodler’s Lexington gray and also Noodlers brown 41 are both waterproof also. They are the only two that I know of. I have been contemplating getting Tom’s pen for awhile now but I like using the fountain pen more than the fine liner. I know I can do that with Tom’s also, but I have some very nice fountain pens that I already have. Thank you for the review!
Thanks for your feedback 👍
You'd say this filofax is the only thing similar to the plotter? These days?
It’s similar, but not the only one. The Filofax Mini Executive is very similar, but this model also suffers from the same “leather” issue.
I've been interested in the Plotter for a long time, but the price has held me back. Later, I saw a comparison image on Reddit between the Plotter and another brand, Meeplus, and I'm considering whether to switch to the Meeplus notebook. Both brands have similar designs, leather materials, and Krause rings. However, this notebook resolves the sharp edge issue, and the leather's back and edges are treated, making it less prone to getting dirty. Even better, it's much cheaper! Could the blogger also review this notebook?
Thanks for the feedback. I have not come across this brand before. It’s interesting that the brand makes a point of showing smoothed back plate ends.
Note about prices: for us in the USA, the Malden is $154 on the FiloFax website, while the Van Der Spek is $144. The VDS doesn't come with inserts, so that's something to consider.
That's outrageous 😳, to call that in good condition 😮 and to pay £20 is awful
It’s more than I would have liked to have paid, but I’m familiar with this issue and it is easy to fix, leaving me with a superb binder once the work has been done. Thanks for your feedback.
its the cheapes form of leather. go to a leatherworker snd pay to get a goodone made
Yes, I will try that. Thank you
Can’t wait to see what you do to rehab it.
I will definitely make a video about it 👍
Hi thanks for the video. I have Guildford with the cracking. The back pocket fell off completely. The inner layer as you say looks like a different material altogether. The outside leather does seem nice though. i agree, such a shame as its a nice stylish piece but not made well enough to last. Shame the plotter is so expensive to buy from UK.
Thanks for your detailed feedback. I agree; the Plotter is soooo expensive. But I’m glad that I took the decision to have one shipped over from Japan.
You should put "poor man's plotter" in the title. Sounds unforgettable. 😂🤣
I quite like that.
Flatability - perfect Rings - excellent Able to peel away the lining with ease - priceless. 😁 it seems to be a great find as you know it will work for you. Perhaps you could swap the rings if one of your Guilfords gives up the ghost? Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
That's great feedback :-) Thank you.
That just makes me sad when Filofax stamp that planner as Deluxe leather, and the quality is so bad 😢😢😢😢😢
I agree with you.
You heard of Plotter? I think you’ll like it. I wish I could walk into a brick and mortar shop for my fountain pens and others. But being where I am in NZ online shopping and importing is the only way. A bit sad really but the alternative is not to able to get them at all. I am just starting Plotter for next year and the reason for it is my good experience with Filofax by Braun Buffel back in the day. But that has become too bulky. I am currently on Hobinichi and have tried Travelers Notebook. Someone mentioned Filofax heritage as their main planner, as we were talking size choices and whether Filofax personal size is equivalent to Plotter Bible size. They are a good approximation. That conversation got me curious about what Filofax Heritage is like. I feel Filofax isn’t competitive with their designs. The materials aren’t good and the designs felt like they are on the back foot following other trends and not in a good way. I fear they won’t make it for much longer without a big change of direction Thank you so much for sharing this!
Nice organizer my friend, thanks for sharing, I'm your new friend from Philippines full support
👍
Thanks. Will this work with Plotter M5, or would there need to be some adjusting, given Plotter isn’t quite the same dimensions as Filofax?
Yes. Works fine in my Plotter Mini 5. I just select A5, then trim the fold-out with scissors.
Today is September 14, 2024, and I am only finding out about these QR codes, just now. It does seem that Filofax UK has versions listed without QR codes.
This is how I printed my project schedules in 52 weeks back in the nineties. Great to see you print your calendar this way.
This is excellent! I wish there were taller mini. What is the next size up with filofax?
Next size up is pocket size.
I saw seaweed kisses video awhile back about how the vintage Filofaxes are so nice (generally) but now everything is “pop” - the colors and faux leather etc… I suppose they have changed their target market.
I saw the same video. I thought it hit the nail on the head. The Filofax brand definitely seems to have experimented with its target market over the years. I do t think I fit into their target audience, but I’m pleased that they still offer many models in black, that might appeal to us guys. Having said that, I quite like my Heritage Compact (despite the problems with the rings).
@@Flatability Yup, the lineup of models and colors have definitely shifted. I hope they keep doing the classics though!
So do I. In fact, I really think there's a market for classic models.
@@Flatability Agreed there is a market. I often check second hand sales and it seems people are fighting for the vintage binders!
I agree that there is growing awareness of vintage binders. But I suspect that rising prices helps encourage more owners to list their old binders for sale.
I would not say that is good condition because of the leather peeling 🤔 I actually have a guildford extra slim as well and there’s just a bit of cracking on the inside lower part where it hits the rings. I don’t want to peel off all the leather… I wonder if conditioning or something would stop the deterioration?
My hunch is that peeling is inevitable, but conditioning might delay things a little. I have left the leather on my Mini Executive, to see what would happen, and what is happening is that the pages are covered in tiny specs of leather. Personally, I do love my Guildford personal, but it took some time to remove all the flaky bits of leather, and I appreciate that not everyone would want to do that.
@@Flatability Thanks for your input. I hope it doesn’t flake into a million pieces because mine looks just like a big crack - maybe different weather affects it differently too!
I think you're right. I have owned an A4 Lyndhurst, for instance, for 20 years, with no cracking. But I have seen others that have cracked. I'm guessing that it might be variations of usage and storage, so maybe some conditioning can reduce this cracking. Of course, the real problem is the layering of different materials that will have different coefficients of linear expansion. If Filofax just returned to making binders in full thickness leather (rather than bonding a very thin layer of "leather" onto a manmade substrate, the cracking problem would be eliminated.
Great idea. Dare I say brilliant, in fact. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Thanks for your feedback 👍
£50 in 1993 pounds was £87 when this video was released, and £104 in 2024.
Hi, slightly off topic. Ive recently purchased a Filofax Mini Portobello but cant find the date it was produced. Ive searched the net etc but still nothing. I was wondering if you had any information on this model. Regards.
Great question! I believe this model was made between 2001 and 2002.
Another fantastic hack! Thanks as always for sharing Neil ❤
You are so welcome!
Best water-resistant fountain pen inks I've tried are Platinum Carbon Black, De Atramentis Document (multiple colours) and Diamine Registrar's (blue-black only). I always have at least some water-resistant inks because I like to draw with my fountain pens, and I sometimes use a watercolour wash over them.
Thank you for your feedback.
You make a good point. All the fancy shimmer, sheen, etc will not help if water just makes it all vanish. Now anything I care about is written with a water resistant ink.
Thank you.
Thank you for another great video. Ive never thought to do these fold outs with my mini binder but I used to do them a lot with my Franklin Covey Classis size binder. A letter sized page folded in half works perfectly with that size.
You are so welcome!
Well, that’s one scenario where your analog system beats your phone for sure. Let’s hope you don’t jump in the sea with that in your pocket. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
I loved your comment :-)
Found this in your “back catalogue” I like the ARC system because of its flexibility. I have them in A4, A5 & A6 sizes. I have now made one in A7 following your video. The smallest discs I have are 12mm, are there any smaller ones? How did the experiment go with your A7 trial?
Glad you found my video useful. I feel, on reflection, that A7 is a little on the small side for discs, but ok for rings. But I will talk about this in a future podcast. Let me think about it for a while.
@@Flatability My A7 rings is not a Filofax and has 6 rings so the dimensions are much larger than A7. So the A7 discs is proving perfect for use as a notebook and simple reminder pad. Flew out on holiday today and used it last night and this morning to list out to do’s for the day. Easy to keep in the pocket of shorts with a Zebra mechanical pencil from Amazon clipped in it.
If I note something in my A7 discs I need to keep I can either re-write it in my A7 rings or A5 discs if it’s short, or punch holes in the paper on the other vertical side and move to the A7 rings or move it directly to the A5 discs as a fly sheet. The other advantage I can see is having standard repeating daily tasks, that I always forget, on a sheet that can be quickly and easily moved to the next day. I’m not using it as a diary.
I receive mine tomorrow! Can you tell me how you fold your paper to size to make your own inserts? Thank you
A Plotter Mini 5? That’s awesome! Because the Plotter is slightly narrower than many mini binders, A7 paper needs to be trimmed. I fold a sheet of A4 in A7 size, punch the holes, and then trim each side. It’s a good question, so I might revisit this issue, for those who haven’t seen previous videos. I’ll add it to my video list 👍
@@Flatabilitythank you sir
After watching some of your videos, I have recently started using my personal Metropol, which I bought when I was still at university. However I use an A5 planner at work and I have decided to get a Filofax (or Van der Spek) for 2025. I am sad they do not have a blue Holborn anymore but out of the Malden/Holborn/Norfolk lineup, which one would you recommend for daily use as an A5? Or maybe bite the bullet and go for VDS (custom made is like 450€)? Thanks.
Interesting question. In fact, a great question. I’m going to talk about this in my next podcast but, if it were me (and given my recent experiences of modern Filofax rings) I’d go for a Van Der Spek, or a Holborn if my budget didn’t stretch that far. I bought my own Van Der Spek (a used model in great condition) for £100, so maybe a used model is an option.
@@Flatability I was also considering a ready made Van der Spek which would be around £170. Hard choice indeed.
A tricky decision, but certainly worth consideration, especially if you’re looking for a binder that will potentially last a long time. £170, for an organiser that might last 20 years, for example, doesn’t sound quite as expensive.
@@Flatability Update: I have decided to go and try the Malden A5 in ochre to see whether my (and yours as I believe) fears would come true or not. The leather seems fine, it does look like it has some sort of coating but overall I would not categorize it as bad (belt quality if it helps 😅). I was mostly nervous about rings, coming from your previous reviews and I can say, they are "fine". No really big misallignments and no gaps but the mechanism is really stiff to open. I will save up next year to go for that elusive VDS so I can do a proper comparison.
Many thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. I guess it shows that the ring alignment and closure will vary, but I'm glad your rings are ok. Let me know if you go for a VDS at some point.
I don,t want QR codes in my Filofax. Absolutely not! Opt in if you want them. I want an analog Filofax filling in my collection Filofaxes
I hear you 👍
Thank you for the video! The paper quality has always been something that kept me from using one so pricey for the quality of paper and how thin it is. But they’re so cute. I’m wondering what color is the brown one? Is it Earth brown by chance?
To my eye, it’s more of a grey colour. I agree that the paper certainly varies in quality, but they feel good in the hand. I think this is the appeal, tbh.
Excellent!
I love your video! My Filofax will return to use today!
That’s awesome!
I built a discbound planner (kind of like your yellow one ) I use a black hair tie, so it doesn't get the rubber band residue on it.
Great tip 👍
