Join us as we have some fun putting Electric Motors where they weren't designed to go and see what we can do about getting some more performance from them
We do builds and projects with electric motors and on electric vehicles, with a focus on electric car conversions. The automotive world is moving towards electric cars at a great pace, but a lot of these are focussed on the mass market or are very expensive performance vehicles.
We want to see what can be done to create our own performance electric cars using the currently available components. We'll take you through every step of our projects (both successes and failures.)
Please come and join us on this journey.

Welcome to the channel, this is where we do EV conversions on fun and interesting cars and try to get as much power as possible from the mainstream OEM EV components currently available today. Our first (and current) project is to build an Electric Porsche 911 using the inverter, motor and battery pack from a Nissan Leaf. The subject of that Electric Conversion is a 1998 Porsche 996 Carrera S.
About the control system we will be using:
We will continue to use the "Open Inverter" logic boards for our EV components. I will be going into more detail in future videos on which inverter we will be using and which logic board. Full details of this open source inverter can be found here:
openinverter.org
And the boards are available to purchase through the shop.
The one I am using is:
openinverter.org/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=57
There is also a community growing around these and associated boards built on the same architecture and software here.
openinverter.org/shop/
I have no association to this other than liking the design and simplicity of the product and I will let you all know how I get on with the boards in future videos.

While we try to make these videos as informative as possible, these are not instructions or how to videos. Working with high voltage electrical components is very dangerous and can injure, maim or kill. The same goes for working on cars and motorbikes. If these videos have inspired you to take on an EV project of your own, and we hope they have, we would encourage you to undertake the necessary study, education, training and/or investigations to familiarize yourself with tasks you are undertaking. Thanks for watching and we hope you have enjoyed the video.

This new Zero EV gear selector allows us easily send the correct signals to the inverter without having to add any additional logic or microcon...
Replacing the Radiators on our Electric Porsche 996 EV Conversion - Cooling system overhaul Pt1
มุมมอง 7172 ปีที่แล้ว
Today we're getting back to sorting out the systems we need to have in place to allow this 1998 Porsche 996 to run on electric power. Though removing the Internal Combustion Engine on this Porsche 911 allows us to get rid of most of the oils and fluids we need to run the car, there is one system we still rely on and that's the cooling. When I started working on this car I found that there was a...

Well, why are you at it? Why not repair the foam that surrounds the heater flap? Since the heater is most likely twenty years old, the foam has disintegrated, causing bits and pieces to be spewed throughout the dash and floor. It is easy to remove and replace with newer materials and adhesives.
Nice work thank you - but please remove all metallic jewellery and wear insulating gloves.
Please don't this genre of background music again in ever of your explanation videos, it's totally not suitable here
Those motors from Nissan leaf are going so cheap in the used market now, I am looking into building a boat with those. its just a steal compared with the maritime electric motors on the market.
Ciao che riduzione ha il cambio ??quanti giri bisogno dare al ingresso per avere 1 giro in uscita ??
How does European 3 phase version charger at 32A single phase, if one 1 phase charging block can do 16A max?
It has a small number of bolts holding the ring gear, seems it would not handle a lot of torque? The toyota highlander rear drive unit is similiar with a built-in much smaller motor and it looks just as strong as this gearbox even though it has only 50hp i think.
Are you going to up the power? A 100hp 911 is not what I'd call a performance car. Would be good driver sure, but just not fast.
Question: If this 11kW charger has 3x3.7kW single ohase chargers, how it chargers at 1x7.4kW? Are the same contactors used to bridge L1 and L2 to make single phase high power AC possible and make the battery live at the grid AC, or is some internal bridge? Or these onboard units can handle 32A (7.4kW) each, but due to heat, togetheter they can handle 11kW?
3 phase charges are 72amp and 22kW, all are at least 2 phase 48amp with 11KW, the third phase just doubles the KW to 22KW
@@Serge0329 The things you wrote make no sense to me.
What are the rectifier diodes D14 and D15 in these phase boards?
Можна схему підключеня
Pls new Video😢
To solder in connectors and wire them up is one thing. But are there schematics which tell you which pin carries what signal? You got CAN but how do you know the commands?? And if you know them, why not using the charger as is ???
Can you help to how I make a design calculation for the ev gearbox
Hi mate - my rhd 996.2 has the passenger side sunroof drain tube hanging down. Do you think I’d be able to remove just the airbag to access reseating the end of the pipe to the lower A pillar?
The coffin arm bolts should be facing upwards with the nuts on top. The Porsche manual shows this pretty clearly in a number of images. See section 40 19 23 (Running gear, Front)
I just watched your video and I just want to say you did an awesome job getting it out I'm redoing minds as well thank you for the info
Can I ask if you know the spec of the fuses that are fitted please or just even post up a link to one? I'm guessing they are 30amp fuses but can't be sure. I'm sure one of mine is blown and I'd like to order some up before I take the unit apart.
450VDC 40A, Littelfuse HEV 40A. Tesla part number 1052769-00-A. Mouser has them but it is way cheaper at Tesla.
Focus!!
Are those orange covers inside the first metal cover designed to avoid arching from the terminals to metal cover as well ?
Thank you for nice videos. Could you please tell me the specific cables numbers connected to type 2 charger port and tesla battery modules?
What a cracking video .Subscribed! Im in a bit of a dilemma .Our 2016 leaf pulls violently to the left when you pull away .Then when you let your foot off the throttle it jerks to the right .Its definately a drivetrain issue .Diff??? Any ideas please .Its doing my nut in ......
Mate these are great videos can’t believe I’ve not come across this channel till now !
@performanceEV is there an order in which you would recommend taking things apart and putting back together when doing the entire rear end? I’m doing shocks, springs, all control arms. The only arm I don’t need to replace is the lower toe control arm.
Does it also have bidirectional capability to convert DC to AC? Because if it does then with just a software upgrade we will also be able to do V2G (vehicle to grid)?
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Time for an update, I am hooked!!!
you are a true pioneer in getting this worked out, man I am hooked now on this project big time!
I never thought of replacing a perfectly good Porsche engine with a Nissan EV motor, but now you have corrupted me too much!! Thank you Shane!!. I am going to buy a $10K Porsche boxter, and move my Nissan Leaf components into it, and maybe move the Porsche components into the Leaf... Will freak many peaople out!!... But I was thinking, I want to drag race a few bullies on the road with this Sleeper EV Porsche, and its top speed only needs to be 120 km /h after which I slow down to 100, and watch the other guy zoom by with a defeated bad temper.. So maybe, the 62Kw battery pack with the 160KW inverter and a differential that is purposely built for max 120 km /speed? I want to achieve 0 - 100km /h in 3 or 4 seconds, with a 50km ev range after whichI will fully charge it for free at the next charging station for the next race.... Any ideas?
Is there a range of Voltage this charger accepts, and what about Frequency? Is there a Label somewhere?
Any update on this vehicle
An old video but impressive work without using $$$$$$ tools like CANalyzer. Love the €9.99 multimeter.
Are there some type of relays into the entry ports that will prevent the car to DC fast charge ? 2016 Tesla X 72A charger error code CHG_u015_F Thank you
Can the motor components placed in different places ?
Do you still pay high road tax in Ireland after conversion?
It would awesome that you make thermal liquid cooling systems for Nissan Leaf car batteries because they drain pretty bad in hot weather.
Any update on the Porsche?
How much weight did you take off?
If the inverter fails would the car still be driveable? Assuming you still have full charge of course.
Thank you thank you thank you I’ve been looking for this and somehow it popped up on my TH-cam today you’re the man appreciate you doing this
Can I meet you to discuss an idea I have. I live in London
Super jealous of your three phase unit! I picked up one of these that was for 48A single phase that I aim to repair. I'll be checking out more of this series, the only difference between yours and single phase is you have two additional HV contactors and the center charger board. I only have 2 charger boards and 2 total contactors.
Does anyone know how DC pins on the socket are isolated if AC charge is accessed? From the way it's connected on the bus bars if you close contactors for AC charge DC pins on the socket will become live, no ?
For model S and X, there are no dedicated DC pins. L1 and L2 becomes (-), while L3 and N becomes (+). These cars predate CCS and adhere to original idea of type 2 plug that it could handle single phase AC, 3 phase AC and DC by the same pins. VW 'invented' CCS to take money for 'promoting fast charging and making EVs practical', because they nerfed they first EVs to 3.7kW AC and claimed nobody bought them because there is no fast charging possible. As for Tesla DC, OBCs are designed to sustain up to 500V DC on the input of AC chargers, without damaging them, and they stay inactive while DC charging.
Thanks for this info. Shows me how to recon my rusty rad brackets. Much appreciated and good luck with the build
may i ask is this a gt2 996?
Great video and well explained. I'm interested in this as my model S only charges at 16 amps on a 40 amp circuit on my Gen 3 wall charges. I think that the onboard charger may be the issue as I have tried it on 2 separate wall charges and other model 3's do get their charge rate at 32 amps on the same wall charges. 103 liked.
'Promo SM' 😆
When you delay showing the real video you show your hands and no one watches.
Nissan was first electric car manufacture why did they get standing ovations like tesla
Would it be possible to put a tesla Onboard Charger in a nissan Leaf to use te 3 phase and ccs combo. In my country every public charger is 3 phase, but my car is 1 phase. And ccs will replace the Chademo.
